I’m all for huge lore backgrounds and stuff, but if Halo 5’s campaign is the length of previous games’ campaigns… it will be a problem. Hunt the Truth is revealing civil unrest, government conspiracies, military unrest, Master Chief AWOL, Locke hunting Chief, Arbiter in there somewhere, Covenant factions fighting, Forerunners returning and the slipspace disturbances in deep space.
Sooo… how much will make it into the campaign? This stuff better not be in terminals only or books only.

This story is getting star wars EU big, before Disney made it uncanon.
343 doesn’t know how to screw up a campaign.
Halo 4 was their first game in the series, and the campaign was still pretty good (and long) by Halo standards, despite being littered with plot device buttons/switches and QTE’s, which kinda makes me wonder if Halo’s campaigns were ever that good by industry standards…
Halo 5’s campaign is going to be fine, and at the least, better than Halo 4’s, which would put it firmly above most campaigns in the series.
The only thing I’m worried about being too big is the staff at 343… The Master Chief Collection made it very clear that too many cooks spoil the broth, and I’d be surprised if Halo 5’s development hands didn’t mirror every bit as much dysfunction and overpopulation as Waypoint.
They said the campaign will be large and expansive. I expect them to deliver.

I think the difference between Halo 5 and the MCC is the amount of developers involved. Cinematics may be outsourced to Blur and maps made by Certain Affinity, but besides that I think it will mostly be in-house at 343. As opposed to different devs for every MCC port and trying to merge that Frankenstein’s monster together.
I personally like the expanded universe. For a long time it’s always just been: Covenant and Flood bad, humans good! Save everyone from certain annihilation! That’s all fine and well, but I like to think games are becoming a little more nuanced in their story telling and not so black and white. I like the approach 343 is taking by giving the larger universe some more background without only relying on the books.
Based on what we know, we’ve also been promised a very large and expansive campaign, so it’s totally reasonable to assume Halo 5 will be biggest offering yet.
While I like the EU, yes, it is becoming too big for it’s britches.
