Whenever Halo Infinite comes out it will unfortunately compared to other shooters like Call of Duty and Battlefield. In my opinion, these comparisons are somewhat unfair. I think Halo should be compared to games like Counter Strike and Valorant. What do you think?
It makes sense to compare a shooter to others of it’s genre, so I don’t see how the comparison is unfair.

You don’t see CoD compared to Valorant. Halo is dramatically different than almost all other games within the FPS genre. Compare it to other arena shooters at least.

Because there is a big difference between an Arena Shooter (Halo), an Arcade Shooter (CoD) and a Large Scale Shooter (Battlefield).
They may all be shooter but they’re not meant to be the exact same in term of gameplay.

Halo, COD, and Battlefield are the big 3 shooters, they’re going to get compared regardless. And the difference between gameplay is worthy enough of comparison, as that’s just comparing the different takes on the shooter genre.
Now a comparison on which one is better than the others is a little iffy, and in which case your point has some validity.

- People compare those two. People compare CoD with any shooter.
- Halo, CoD, and Battlefield are the big 3 when it comes to shooters in the overall gaming community. It makes sense to compare them. Not all comparisons are “X is better than Y” btw, as people like to compare the different takes on the FPS genre itself.

Yeah I was more thinking about people comparing to see which one is better and not comparing gameplay differences because people wants to proove the game they like is good and they do that by comparing to something different just to say “the game I like is better”.
That’s the kind of comparison I see a lot on French Forum so most of the time I’m thinking about that when I say “You can’t compare two different games to say one is better than the other especially when they don’t have the same intentions”

Yeah, that I agree with 100%. It’s like comparing apples to pears: Sure, they’re both fruit, but they both have a unique flavor and texture, so some will prefer one over the other.

People expect the gameplay to make changes like Call of Duty, but it’s just not needed I feel. I honestly think Halo is best at it’s core and doesn’t need too many changes which isn’t a flashy new thing however it’s still a really fun regardless.
I hate to admit, I also have a bad habit of comparing other games to Halo as well. Since I’m a single player type of gamer, I often compare Halo to:
- The Last Of Us
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- God of War
- Horizon Zero Dawn
- Spider Man PS4
- The Witcher 3
- Ghost of Tsushima
Hoping Infinite will have a narrative that’s as masterful as the games I’ve listed. I don’t care about comparing it to COD, Battlefield, Apex, Valorant, etc. Anyone else feel the same?

Since Halo is such a big franchise people compare it to the graphics of single player games which is mind boggling.

I’ll admit, I am one of those people unfortunately lol. Halo is my favorite franchise and whether we like it or not, it will be compared to Horizon Forbidden West at GOTY awards. It may lose in graphics but I want Infinite to win best storytelling and GOTY 2021. It’s toxic, and I know I need to not let others voice get in my head.

That was my issue with Halo 5: Too many changes to the core movement system. I didn’t have an issue with sprint, slide, or clamber, as those make the game more immersive imo and are really basic, but that thruster bs was unneeded. It took away from what made Halo’s gameplay iconic and just made it seem like a futuristic shooter. So far, it seems that Infinite’s movement system is exactly as I want it, so I’m pretty happy.

I firmly believe 343i should treat Halo like CS GO and Valorant. Make the core systems that hit again and make small adjustments to those systems. Halo doesn’t need to be revolutionary to be one of the most popular games. Make it a strong competitive game and then add modes where you play around with mechanics as side modes.

I just think we are in the age of “look at this pretty thing that seems new”. Gaming media has ruined games. Doom Eternal for example was an insanely great game, but it wasn’t an open world game so people were disinterested.

I think that might be what 343 is doing with Infinite. Though, I guess we have to wait until the 13th to get that confirmed now, don’t we?

I would argue that the gameplay from last year strongly suggests that it is. We will see soon enough!
It depends on what is being compared and how. They may not be the exact same, but they are all the most popular FPS games out there it makes sense that they would be compared. I have made comparison in things like the story and characters of Halo and Mass Effect and those games are far more different mechanics wise than anything else listed.
It all depends on the context imo.

I firmly believe Halo especially high end has more strategy involved like CS GO and Valorant. Outside of being on a map and having guns it’s not like arcade shooters. Those type of shooters are more for mass media. I think the media context is what bothers me more than anything.

I hear you, but Halo is also by any objective metric produced for mass media as well, and it can be important at times to remind ourselves not to get too elitist about our specific game type even if it have features that we prefer shown in greater depth.
I’d point out that what we are already doing here is making honest comparisons between the various games. Yes there are aspects that Halo holds very similar to CS GO and Valorant, especially if you specifically like the squad based objective arena modes this becomes even more apparent. On the other hand, If you play WZ you may start to get some Battlefield vibes here and there though, and there are mechanics and strategies far more fleshed out in Battlefields vehicle play that make Halo look like child’s play and admittedly even COD (dare I admit it) has customization and UI features that should in my opinion be appreciated and not just hated because they are popular. Game modes like Infection and Action Sack are there own things as well and are probably deserving of comparisons to other games that we aren’t even discussing here that might not initially scream “Halo” to the average player.
For me Halo is best for its story which is leagues better than whatever American Military -Yoink- that most other FPS usually boil down to, and is why I make many comparisons of Halo to series like Mass Effect, Dead Space and Dragon Age despite these games being completely different genre of games many of their plot points or characters have strong contrast. If there are features of MP that you find to be the main course it makes sense why you would balk at comparisons that don’t relate those features, although again even here comparing a game like Halo 3 to Halo 5 would be comparing two very different games yet certainly we would entertain such comparisons, no? If so why be surprised by the occasional COD comparison.
