Yeah, that annoys me quite a bit. But I understand why they do it, it would make story-telling annoying if everyone was masked the whole time.

Man, I hate how librarian looks 
such a lame design, like you wrapped pig skin around a guys face and cut holes out the eyes and lips. I hate humanoid aliens, she should have looked more like didact, give her more interesting skin tone variation, hair, weird ears, and an odd mouth shape. She could’ve had glass eyelashes, hair running down the center of her forehead to her brow, a curved mouth shaped like -__/-, anything. Probably the worst design from halo 4.

Technically they do have different ears.
But really the forerunner novels tried to stress how similar we were. I was actually surprised how different they both looked from humans in h4.
