I’ve played a lot of Halo, Call of Duty and Battlefield in my time. Although I’ve played Halo the most out of all other games, that’s not to say I’m inexperienced with any of them. I know enough to tell when a game plays like CoD and when it doesn’t, and I roll my eyes and nearly throw up every time I read “And don’t even get me started about sprint, Halo’s turned right into CoD.” or “ADS, we might as well be playing CoD now” and so on and so on. Breaking news here, Halo plays in no way like CoD in Combat Evolved, Halo 2, Halo 3, Reach, HALO 4, or Guardians. You guys just freak out over ADS being in the game that you don’t even look at the effect it has, you can’t see the forest for all the trees. Yes all weapons have ADS. But does that actually affect gameplay that drastically? No. Look at the AR, it reduces bloom by about 20% - 25% but cuts movement speed and the Motion Tracker. Nobody ever remembers that Halo was one of the first games on consoles to have ADS. We just didn’t have it on all weapons but we had it. But even if we didn’t have it first, is it that big of a deal? Halo doesn’t have to be 100% unique in every single way.
The gameplay between the two only resemble each other in Halo’s faster playing modes with less health like SWAT. But even then it still plays so little like CoD. The only way I can see people reaching this conclusion is just looking at individual features with a microscope or are remembering the time they played some of the older CoDs years ago.
The hardcore Halo community wants Halo to be this exclusive club, and that’s exactly what it’s gonna become; just before it dies. Everywhere I look I just see people begging for essentially a re-release of Halo 2 with better graphics and a massively over-powered Magnum like we have now. Wait wait wait wait… isn’t that just like -gasp- CALL OF DUUUTY?? But you’ve got a problem with all this. The majority of people don’t want a game that plays exactly like a game that was new and revolutionary more than a decade ago. If this were true, Halo 5 would be the bestselling game in years but its not. We don’t need to go so far back in the past for a new game. I’m sorry but some people’s nostalgia isn’t worth sinking the franchise over.
And with Halo 5 specifically, the reason that’s dropped off it because it just doesn’t feel right in the most important place for an FPS: the gunplay. Even the massive damage dealing, over-powered Magnum doesn’t feel like it has power behind it. None of the weapons really do at all. The weapon sounds are terrible and just don’t give the feeling of really having the power to wreck shop. Look at Doom, every weapon in it that I used in the Beta feels like it has power behind it, and Halo just doesn’t. What Call of Duty does well is making the weapon feel like yours, specifically the TreyArch Call of Duties. They feel almost personal and all of them have their advantages and disadvantages but they aren’t so plainly seen and only usable inside those limitations. If you get experienced enough with an SMG in CoD, you can get it to break out of the limitations along with attachments. The Magnum is the only gun like that but it’s just because it was built to dominate more than anything else to please the community.
Maybe if the community stopped shouting “Cwall ov Deuty Cwall ov Deuty” at every new feature before actually seeing if it makes the game play like it the games would be a bit different. I know it would make 343 act differently. I think they’re pretty much running around in the chicken routine trying to please everyone who loses it if it isn’t a re-release but still trying to do what’s going to alter the series which does actually have a chance of doing good.
Sprint and ADS would like to have words with you

Did you not read any of this…?
I did, I read all of it, but to say that ADS in its incarnation in H5 doesn’t effect game play is completely wrong
ADS grants automatic weapons range accuracy and damage bonus something that with the exception of the plasma rifle in CE halo has never had, this is something halo adopted from other franchises, much like sprint
to say that those two things among all of the other elements pulled from COD and battlefield haven’t impacted the way halo plays at a core level is asinine
Every time a game has anything that COD just so happens to have, everyone freaks out and yells " It’s just like COD!! It’s just like COD!!" This paranoia is just like the red scare, except in this case it’s COD-ism instead of communism.

But again, the series has to change. I know that every single bullet fired from the Magnum doesn’t have this methodically planned out trajectory, it’s pointing in the general direction and pulling the trigger a bunch, just like the AR. So people are either going to be spamming at long range with the AR or the Magnum but at it’s heart it’s not all that different. Again, Doom is a perfect example of still keeping a lot of its core, like Halo, but not holding itself to outdated mechanics and features that were the product of the time period’s limitations, unlike Halo.

Right, because god forbid that an automatic weapon actually be useful in any situation in a Halo game. Smart-scope gives automatics a slight range increase, which is negated as soon as they get hit by something. Also, a damage bonus? No.

Both the AR and SMG get headshot multipliers while in smart scope aka a damage bonus

I’m all for the series changing if the change makes sense and is good for the franchise however
judging from the fact H5 is the least selling halo of all time and dropped its population faster than H4 it’s safe to say the changes are not making sense for the franchise

Yes, but only after shields pop. Which I think a lot of people can agree is pretty minimal at best. I know it only cuts off two to three rounds off of the AR kill at the most.

I think that relates more to the loss of the casual crowd more than anything else. And that more ties into the Community wanting super hardcore MLG Arena.

Ok? The Magnum is a five shot kill at all distances. It does more damage per round than every regular weapon except the DMR, which it barely differs from. I think if everyone was really worried about balance the Magnum would be a bit different. I think a lot of this stems from a misunderstanding of auto users like myself. We don’t spray and pray constantly. I dare say that the AR takes more skill or at least equal skill to use against the Magnum. The Magnum has no true range limit, it’s equally effective at all ranges, the AR isn’t by any means.

Not true at all
it has a direct relation to both the quality of the games or there lack of 343 has produced (H4 MCC H5) and also the changes to the core halo gameplay from the original trilogy
H4 was super casual and lost 80% of its population six months after launch Because people both casual and competitive rejected the changes made to the franchise by 343
Rejected them so much by the way that 343 was forced to backtrack and re-implement most of the things they removed
H5 may steer more towards the competitive side of things, but what’s wrong with that?
the casuals had reach and H4 as super casual games and the competitive community was unhappy now H5 trends more towards competitive and the casual community is unhappy
Personally, H3 had it perfect
we need to go back to that especially when it came to competitive and casual
H3 was a game that anyone could play no matter what mood or frame of mind they were in and no one was excluded
we need that for H6

The magnum if anything is underpowered
all automatic weapons have a lower TTK than the magnum
The magnum also only kills at all ranges if the player lands all their shots which outside of the magnums RRR is quite difficult to do
whats it matter what the distance is?
the AR is a 16sk at all ranges (14sk with headshot)
whats your point?

I do enjoy Halo 3 a lot but I think it’s the over used precision weapons that turn people off. Yes yes, I’m familiar with the H3 BR but I think inside of that is what turns people off. Reach was the most successful Halo game in years because it balanced precisions with bloom.

Bloom was one of the worst things to happen to halo, there is a reason why it was removed
Reach is the most successful halo game in yeas because of the utter failures that were H4 MCC and H5 H:R did not match the sales or the population that H3 had

Um, excuse me, the AR is rarely ever a 18 round perfect at its shallow range. Anything outside of its range and you’re lucky to walk away with 10 rounds left. Unlike the magnum which has the capability to kill three full heath Spartans with one clip at nearly any range you’ll commonly run into. The AR is thought of as the peasant weapon that the majority uses and only the elite can use the Magnum but it’s the other way around. Look at the kill feed for a match or two…

But you just said that bloom was removed, which it was for precisions in 4 & 5, if that was Reach’s main problem then why didn’t everyone who settled with Reach move on to 4 and 5 and love them more and buff the populations?

> Um, excuse me, the AR is rarely ever a 18 round perfect at its shallow range. Anything outside of its range and you’re lucky to walk away with 10 rounds left. Unlike the magnum which has the capability to kill three full heath Spartans with one clip at nearly any range you’ll commonly run into. The AR is thought of as the peasant weapon that the majority uses and only the elite can use the Magnum but it’s the other way around. Look at the kill feed for a match or two…
You misunderstand
the magnum appears in the kill feed frequently because it has become the games utility weapon
Also the magnum can only kill 2 Spartans
the magnum as a 12 round mag and is a 5sk, so it can only kill two Spartans before needing to be reloaded
also so also the AR no longer has a shallow range it’s range has been increased since H4 and gets increased again in smart scope making it function a bit too well at mid-long range
