Halo DID ALWAYS cared about how to customize your spartan/elite and how to earn them

Since COMBAT EVOLVED there has been a way to change how your spartan looked. was it good? no, but it was something. changing the solid color of your spartan, yeah you could only see the change in FFA but again, it was something. you can see ‘oh that yello dude is good’ or ‘oh that sage bloke is a -Yoink!-’ something to tell who is who

Halo 2 updated it with primary and secondary colors along with being able to play as a split lip. the colors again have the issue of only being able to be seen in FFA but now you can see ‘that sodding elite prefered species is good’ but admittedly in team based games you couldn’t tell the difference that much since it was a 50/50 for the most part

Halo 3 updated it ten fold. now, even in teams, you can tell what player is who because they’re unique. pri, sec, and tertiary colors are available. AND armor customization. now you can see ‘oh god, that ODST helmet, EOD and security shoulders lad is briliant’ and same with the elites ‘pilot squid face’. you can tell who is who in a teams, despite it being RVB. from the helmet to the shoulders and chest piece. everyone felt unique. all be it, it was a lot harder, having to do specific achievements to get the armor pieces, but you could get a good amount just by PLAYING THE CAMPAIGN

Halo Reach updated it more and a lil less. elites now have preset armor as the in universe ranks, unfortunately can’t be mixed and matched. tertiary colors were removed, but the spartan armor was updated ten folder. aside from helmets, chest and shoulders. you had utility, visors, armor effects knee guards, and wrist attachments. now you felt even MORE UNIQUE along side others, be it for FFA or Teamed. in teams you don’t have to look at the color set, you can just go ‘that blue flamed -Yoink!- is trash’ or ‘that MK6, security and comando, prosthetic having -Yoink!- -Yoink!-’ you can tell that player is that spartan, that is their space barbie that they were rewarded with FOR PLAYING THE GAME. sure it could be cheesed… BUT, you could earn the armor through getting CR by playing the multiplayer, more if you win, and more FOR DOING GOOD. yeah you got a lot more for doing the weeklys, but they weren’t required. you were rewarded for spending your time playing the game, and teased to keep playing, seeing the armor you could get.
or if you wanted to get some quickly, you could get specific achievements for Reach and ODST, head on over to waypoint and get 2 helmets and a chest piece for really no time at all, akin to 3

Halo 3 ODST didn’t have much… but what you did get, was Firefight characters based off of the campaign characters. and you got them THROUGH PLAYING THE STORY

Halo 4 kinda removed a lot that Reach had. but did have the addition of arms and legs to be customized, which is nice. and you earn them through ranking up by playing the multiplayer and weekly challenges

Halo 5, worst of the lot. only helmet, visor, body, weapon skins and assignation animation. VERY lacking compared to the other games… but you can earn the currency THROUGH PLAYING THE GAME and earn the armor

Halo infinite does offer a good amount of armor stuff. but most is locked behind a paywall. sure you could get some from the campaign… but it’s kinda underwhelming. and what you can customize is very limited. no more is there primary and secondary colors the player can choose, now there’s armor coatings. no more can you have last gen and current gen armor pieces like in halo 3 and Reach. now they’re locked behind armor cores… you want a armor piece that’s on a certain kit? well i guess you’re gunna have to be that preset to have that armor piece. it ain’t good at all

‘oh, but other games like call of duty do this tooo!’
true, but halo and CoD do so for different reasons, and CoD has an excuse, halo doesn’t
Halo has aloud players to customize since DAY 1. CoD really hasn’t, you’re just faceless soldiers on a battle field
CoD really only had weapon skins. and player customization only really started as of recent. Halo has been doing this forever. it makes sense for CoD to put cosmetics behind a paywall, since not many cares about that in CoD. Halo on the other hand has players caring about that since the launch of CE, and forever bettering customization in future games, making it feel unique from the other games. which is why it feels like 343 are only doing this for the money, and are trying to make every excuse in the book to justify it. Halo isn’t Call of Duty, we gotta remember this people
‘oh but it doesn’t effect gameplay’ you’re right, but it does effect some player attention. people love the feeling of being rewarded. and without that? they feel like they’re wasting their time and will leave

Actually Halo 2 made your primary color into your secondary color on team modes. Unless this is an MCC thing, it’s quite neat. I’ve been betrayed many times because of being blue primary on red team. It’s a mind game lol.

oh really? i’ve actually never noticed. i think it might be a MCC thing, with reds having red primary and so on.
but still, doesn’t the secondary color still show despite the team color? showing a slight player difference?

No no. Your primary of any color shows up in place of your secondary with team games. Red and Blue uses red and blue as the primary color, but the player’s personal color of white, green, yellow, etc that is their primary becomes their secondary color. So say a blue player has pink secondary, the pink is their selected primary color while their secondary color is not used.

Tried to explain it in depth. Sorry for a long post.

ah you’re fine, but alright, that makes more sense, for as iffy as that is. seems like they did indeed change it in MCC halo 2 to better convay who is on what team lol

So you pointed out how there never was any consistency between titles to how you acquired customization aspects, just that things have changed over time in various ways.

Some gave it to you, some had you work for it, some made you grind for it, some made you pay for it, some made you pay for random bits and pieces.

But no consistency regardless.

fair, that i did. they were all inconsistent but they are however consistant in a few ways:
you earned the cosmetics through playing the game, and they are an insentive to keep playing
Halo 3 had the insentive to play very well in the multiplayer, and even going through the hardest difficulty in the campaign for a load of cosmetics
Halo Reach gave an insentive to go back and play ODST for a couple helmets that aren’t that bad. and of course getting a first strike. the ranking and progression system was better though, showing and teasing the future armors you could get just by playing the game. yeah it was a grind… but it was a fair grind. since by the time you unlocked the armor piece, you had enough Cr to unlock it, or potentially save it for the next armor pieces you could get by continuing to play
Halo 5 wasn’t as grindy. but it still feels rewarding earning the currency and getting 1 or 2 legendary packs before logging off for the night
they are consistant in being grindy, like infinite, yes. BUT, the grindiness is FAIR. you didn’t have to pay to advance quicker. or play in a very annoying way. no, you’d just play at your own pace, and gave a reason to play the objective and win for more Cr

Rip playable sangheili ;-;

Because I can’t play as a sangheili though I honestly don’t care much about custimization anymore…. Liek it is cool and all but without sangheili…. I don’t care

They need to be brought back…

It has been a whole decade

whiles i personaly can live without playable sangheili… i will admit it is dissapointing, as an elite prefered species myself. like it’s been 9 years (excluding MCC) to be able to play as a elite… and Reach did the sangheili the best imo in terms of ballancing and designs

Yeah but you could rarely play as the sangheili in reach…

So… for me it has been roughly 11 years….

Imma die soon if they aren’t added lol

true, you could only play as them in Invasion and Custom games. god… does it even really matter?
like if everyone is gunna pull the whole ‘it’s just cosmetic’ excuse… then why not playable sangheili

Because they hate us ;-;

Wait…

I mean sangheili

Cause i am totally not a sangheili :eyes:

Jokes aside I don’t know why there is pushback…

Like with the comp people, if that pkayer model happens to be advantageous…

Why don’t you all play as it? Everyone has equal opportunity to…. Why not then?

Also, if anythign the sangheili player model is bigger than spartans so it would be disadvantagous then… why do they care? I don’t get it…

We wouldn’t be forcing you to play them lol

I don’t get the oushback from anyone honestly…

Bungie did it in a game with a development refered to as hell sometimes and they managed to oull it off and it was AWESOME…
Why can’t 343?

because, and here’s the simple fact of it: modern gaming
343, unlike old bungie, doesn’t care about the players or the game. as long as they can make money. and even if they do add playable elites… it’l be an armor core that probably costs 10-20 bucks. even 30 if they’re ballsy enough to piss off the elite prefered species of the world…

but yeah, the elites were a fair trade off. playing as a different species from the spartans, but at the cost of a muuuch bigger hit box. no one was ever forced to play as an elite, you could play as a spartan and trash on the sangheili. no harm or foul it was… but 343 ain’t gunna care unless it’s to make money

To be fair, compared to most armor prices in this game I would give my left arm for a $10 Sangheili Battle Pass that gave you a custom Elite armor core and several armor pieces in the cool new H2A inspired Elite style.

It sure beats $10 for some pineapples or $8 for basic red.

even as a split lip… i personaly wouldn’t even pay to be a sangheili. even if the armor was looking better and like a proper elite, i personaly still woudn’t be paying for it either… since that’s what 343 wants, and especially microsoft

That’s why I was specific and said “compared to most armor prices in the game.” Of course I would hate that have to pay for it in general as well.

okay, fair, my bad. it would be a mostly better cosmetic for the price… but i’m sure 343 knows that. which is why i recon it would be faaar more than 10 for a elite armor core

I…. Would pay if my parents would let me (their argument is college is comming up….)

yeah… college is far more important than an ingame polygon model that looks like an hot sangheili -v-

Can’t recall off the top of my head but I can confirm Halo 3 used your secondary color even when on a team.
