Why is it that every time I hear a complaint about the Halo 5 campaign in that “Its story sucked!!” that I grow even more pissed at the Halo Community. People, its a game, its title is Halo 5: Guardians. It isn’t its own story, its a segment to the story of ‘Halo.’ Its the same concept as a book, there are multiple in a series to tell a complete story; that’s what this is, a chapter essentially. If you hate on this game alone as if it is its own entity, then you’re really just ruining the entire story for yourself, as well as everyone else.
All in all… there is so much to come with this story, lets be honest. We’re in for a treat, people, I tell you (:
I agree with you but only thing that people really hated was the lack of Blue team and I have a reason why that were lacked. Remember when Osiris were talking on Meridian thinking that the Promethians let them go threw. It would be a no combat mission if they let a mission of Blue team. Plus the story it self wouldn’t have Blue team do anything.
Uhm, I don’t think anyone complains about the story because it’s an entry in a longer story line. Me and those who agree with me are complaining about it because we think it’s poorly written and executed, and use an at this point overused cliche. On top of that it comes from absolutely no where, as the character who makes it possible was said to be stone dead and gone for quite some time. Not to mention there’s close to nothing story wise tying Halo 4 and 5 together.
Even if you look at Halo 5 as its own entity without regards to the marketing, I think it’s poorly done. It tries to set things up but those are quickly forgotten. Few things are well explained and it feels as if many aspects of the story are in there, just to be in there. For instance, what are the rest of the ensemble actually doing there? Blue team and Osiris, I don’t remember them mattering at all. Buck saves Locke ones? Other than that they’re idly sitting by. In the Chief and Locke slap contest, one team goes on and the other watch eating popcorn.
It feels flat, shallow and uninspired. When I said I thought Cortana would be back, I thought it’d be through the reverse process of the Composers. Not a retcon version stored in what seems to be a retconned Domain through retconned means.
I enjoyed the story myself. However, you can’t force people to accept something and like it, because the main point of this forum is to provide feedback. If people don’t speak up when dissatisfied about something, how would anything ever get better?

So say a movie or book comes out that’s part of a long running series…you are claiming that people can’t complain that they didn’t like the movie because it’s part of a series. You surely aren’t serious. It’s no different than a tv series episode. Some are good, some are bad and no matter how good the overarching series is I still have every right to complain about the -Yoink- second episode. Every story has to be able to stand on its own legs.

Imagine Harry Potter and the Order of Phoenix dropping Serious Black altogether and Voldemort being traded for Dumbledore while introducing new characters that aren’t developed as well as she does it. All this done by Rowling in a short story that ahe verbally tell before OoP is released.

That isn’t an appropriate comparison as Halo 5 is a numbered main series release. I’ll humor you though, if Rowling (Or any other author) tells a short story and that story isn’t very good, then I have every right to complain about it. Each story has to be taken on its own merit or lack of merit in this case.
I’ll come right out and say it: This campaign doesn’t need an apology for being a middle child. It was a perfectly serviceable story. Its only failing, if it has to have one, is that it wasn’t easy to understand if you didn’t know anything about the lore outside of the games. Or if the sophistication of your literary palate doesn’t extend beyond comic books. Call me a snob if you want to because, yes, I did just call the haters mostly illiterate.
Yeah… wake up and get on the competitive train that built this series into such a huge phenomenon!
Halo’s always had the great custom games and everything too, but the competitive spirit is really lacking in this community! If only we could LAN and split screen like the old days…

The story is WORSE if you think of it as part of the series as a whole. It has absolutely nothing to do with the previous games, no plot continuation whatsoever, just a couple reused characters. It’s better to just think of it as a nonsensical standalone than a part of the halo series.
Yeah, but with the Halo franchise, we hold the story of its campaign to a high standard because of the massive extended universe and because of the storytelling of the previous games. When a Halo game comes out with a subpar story, especially for a mainline title, I think people are fully justified in stating that it was bad.

But it’s SO BAD. The game is its own Metaphor, I can’t think of anything worse to compare it to.
Unfortunately the broad strokes of the campaign really sucked. It felt like the creative decisions were being made by suits and not writers.
That’s not saying that it’s not fun to play through and that there aren’t some epic moments, but overall it was a big disappointment compared to my high hopes.
Cortana coming back as the villain after her sacrifice, Tacked on AI helping locke at the end just to open gates, M’dama dying right at the start, guardians reveal being lame compared to a halo reveal, Palmer and Lasky and Halsey having non-roles (why even bother with them?), missed opportunities with Blue Team, Chief being basically besotted with a computer program,
I enjoyed the story and I hope something huge is coming for the future if I look back on the trailer where the master chief is in the desert with Cortanas chip in his hands and the guardian which come out. I can’t imagine they make a trailer like this for nothing

Have you not seen what the ads depicted the story as? “The greatest Hunt will begin with halo 5” what a load of -Yoink-. It was poorly written thanks to that idiot comic book author Brian reed.
The reason 5s story sucked wasn’t because it was a bad story it was because the story wasn’t what it could / should have been. We had 3 years of build up with tones of different chapters of Halo story’s coming together to form a galaxy changing event, instead 343 just made a retcon in a forum post and ignored all previous marketing and plot devices.
343s blind negligence, trying to achieve to much and lack of understanding and communication with the fans created the disappointment that was the 5 campaign. We have to remember that what we got was only half of the planned story for 5 which means that the half of the campaign that probably tied all the plot threads together was probably just cast aside due time restraints.

The expanded universe fans were just as confused the EU has barley any influence on Halo 5, 343 ignored most of the EU plot threads that they created causing some retcons to be made.
Non of the EU that was released before 5 was directly mentioned by any character and the only EU concepts that were included was the Domain which was brought back by a Retcon and Blue team who might as well not been the game at all since they barley effect the story in the slightest.
