HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED: Greatest FPS ever created

HALO:COMBAT EVOLVED is the Greatest FPS ever created

Halo: Combat Evolved is quite simply the greatest FPS ever created. Even though it was released 10 years ago it remains the best Halo game in the series.

I remember playing it for the first time and being blown away by every aspect of it from the huge levels with amazing lighting to the seamless intergration of vehicles and sublime gunplay. Not to mention the most ferocious enemy AI yet seen.

It could easily be the most vivid universe ever brought to life in a game, on par with even Star Wars. The unique locations and alien races all characterised by their own unique architecture come together to paint a world of unparalleled depth.

Halo CE set the bar so high the first time round that I was destined to be dissapointed with every Halo game Bungie was to release thereafter.

The biggest surprise to me is how well Halo (with a new lick of paint) stacks up against contempary shooters of today - It quite simply makes modern shooters look foolish. And it does so without using any gimicky features whatsoever.

With all the negative things people have to say about Halo CE, I thought I would like to see a place where we can heap upon Halo the praise it deserves. Because lets face it, if Halo 4 is half as good as Halo CE we are going to be in for one hell of a ride.

I love how the game doesn’t feel ten years old. It just goes to show just how much Halo revolutionised the FPS genre. The enemy AI, in my opinion, perform just as well and sometimes better than than the AI we see today.

Today, enemies don’t feel aggressive enough; often doing nothing while the player recharges shields or health. Elites actively give chase when you run to hide, and flank when given the opportunity.

people dont have much anything negative to say about ce.
Ive been playing it for about 8 years and it is so great, besides a few netcoding issues when played online, the game is fun, balanced, and competitive. Something that shooters like COD will never be.
The only game I enjoy or played as much as CE is reach for that matter

Halo: CE was definitely ahead of its’ time, and I got tons of hours of fun from it. Trying glitches, tricks and doing levels on Legendary with just Covenant weapons, whacking every enemy etc.

But for me, CounterStrike will always hold a special place in my heart above Halo: CE and Ocarina of Time. Sue me.

I agree, CE is the best.

While games like Goldeneye, Perfect Dark, and Duke Nukem did help show fps games could be on consoles, Halo CE is what broke the barrier to really allow that.

It’s one of the best, i agree. The best? Probably not since that comes down to preference. Of course it’s still a great game, it’s too bad some don’t know about the FPS that came before and only know about Reach and COD.

Though it’s fact that Halo is why we have successful console based shooters on a broad scale; it proved the terri bad elitists of the PC community (PC gaming itself rocks btw) that with the right controller scheme and aim assist, shooters can be played with a pad and be enjoyable. Then with the advent of Xbox Live and Halo 2, it just went from there. Most FPS owe Halo for it’s control schemes, regenerative health, a good, fully voiced Campaign with deep characters and intriguing universe.

Of course, CE:A received positive reviews and feedback. That is indeed most impressive for a game that is about a decades old, you won’t see this kind of gem (it is flawed though) in gaming very often.

Don’t think you’ll see a COD remake from the past, they are good games; just not memorable as Activision shells them out literally every year.

343 did the impossible, they made Halo CEA better than the original game!

Holy hell, the graphics make Halo Reach look like at 8-bit game, the level of detail they have added to this game is truly astonishing, especially in 3D…

The best part is that while the controls feel just like Halo CE, the Remastered sound fx, ochastrated score, seamless co-op and utterly STUNNING graphics make CEA feel like a whole new game.

And thats without having used the skulls yet!

This may be the most evolutionary remake I have ever played in my gaming history…

HALO: COMBAT EVOLVED: Greatest FPS ever created

Like any great play, Halo’s story unfolds in a series of acts. Three acts to be exact. They go something like this:

ACT 1: Head first into a guerilla war on an Alien world

Pillar of Autumn
Halo
Truth and Rec
Silent Cartographer
Assault on the Control Room

These levels form the core of what defines Combat Evolved for most people. They introduce you to all the great combat mechanics and run you through every possible tactical combat scenario from tight intense corridor encounters to wide open spaces for sniping and freeform vehicle combat.

ACT 2: The introspective levels

343 Guilty Spark
The Library

On these levels the pace of the game changes completely and we’re given a suitably dark tone for the introduction of the flood. Intergalactic Zombies!

ACT 3: The world you discovered now transformed by the new menace

The Two Betrayals
Keyes
The Maw

Here we revisit places from the first act but experience them in a darker moodier tone. Some people criticised the game for re-using the levels in this way but I have to dissagree. This is also the first time we get to watch from a distance as the Covenant do battle with the flood.

Coming to a theatrehouse near you: Halo the musical.

I prefer Halo 2. But you gotta love the Zealots in Halo 1. They’re fun and scary.
