Halo Channel App Video Playback Issues

I am currently having issues with video playback for the Halo Channel App on my Droid device.
The videos will load perfectly, but a few seconds in (usually 4-7 seconds) I will get a message about the video not being playable at this time.

I have the most current update on my HTC ONE M8. I have tried both WiFi and 4g. I uninstalled/reinstalled the app. Not sure if this matters, but I also have the most current Google Chrome browser. I have restarted my device. I can watch videos from the mobile version of Waypoint with no issues. Also, I CAN watch full episodes of R v. B without issue.

Also, side note: How do I get my badge for being on Waypoint the first few months this site was up? I don’t see it in my badges.

Is this happening with specific videos? Generally when that error message appears, it means that the data pipeline has either ‘starved’ or encountered an error of some sort, so if it is specific videos, we can see if it is something with those specifically.

As for the badge, I have no idea :frowning: I am just a Halo Channel Test Guy…

It was for the Mega Blocks premier of the new Warzone map, Fall of Reach teaser, Bulletin and a hand full of other videos. I’ll try Sprint and some more videos and get back to you on this.

So, I just tried The Sprint (Road to E3 and MP beta), Halo: Nightfall and the previous videos I had stated. No luck for anything besides RvB.

Also, you’re more than just a Test Guy.

This intrigues me… RvB vidoes are fairly short, and buffer well due to their compression, but most of the Sprint/Bulletin videos should fall into the same range, so this is sort of perplexing.

I am guessing this is Android 5+ on the device? And that you are connecting via Wifi rather than devouring your data plan? As an experiment, could you disable cell data temporarily, and renew your connection to Wifi and see if the throughput changes?

We do not have this specific device to test on, so we are trying to eliminate issues such as i/o conflicts between cell/wifi, and I ask about the Android version because there are some specific differences between 4.4.x and 5.x that we can look at as well.

Any feedback is probably beneficial… And of course, if you REALLY want to jump into testing, we can do stuff like force stop the app, clear caches and data for Halo Channel, restart the app clean, and see if that improves anything.

I will do this later this afternoon.

I am currently running 5+

I tried a few different options I will mention in a bit in this post, but I encountered a unique bug directly after signing out then back in.
I first switched to Wi-Fi only and noticed a longer load time on the same network I have been using. I was receiving the same signal strength and data transfer as I have been. I then tried signing out/in then I encountered that I could watch the full video, but audio only. I never got the video part. This was with all videos I tried. I failed to try and watch RvB during this test.

I “force stopped” the app and now am encountering the same issues as before. No video, no audio even after many attempts. This time I did watch RvB, but I had no video, just audio.

I switched my mobile data back on mid video (no worries, I have unlimited data) of RvB season 11 episode 1, tried to back out and was stuck in the loading screen while the video played until my phone turned off, presumably because my phone thought that nothing was happening and went to sleep.

Started a new instance of the app with both 4G and data on. Only audio again for all videos including RvB.

My data cache for this app was 12.5 MB before I cleared data and cache. Signed in to a new instance of the app, the home screen loaded in chunks and I only had audio again for all videos, including RvB.

Every instance I have also tried to enlarge the screen and shrink it to see if that would “trick it”, still no luck.

Thanks for the feedback, we will be reviewing and investigating further today.

I have android phone 4.4.2 google chrome installed, phone is ab ASUS padfone x and i get error say video issue, we were unable to play the video at this time. Every time i try to play a video on halo channel app.

Just an update, we are continuing to investigate as many Android related issues as possible, but this work will be fairly slow as we will be using emulators to simulate hardware (The cost and ability to acquire every Android device ever is somewhat not practical)

Ah the joys of being a developer. If only I got bug reports at 1/4 of the accuracy that gets noted in here, I’d be happy :stuck_out_tongue:

I have been fortunate in that since November, a lot of the forum folks have picked up on my subtle hints on what to tell me so I can look into stuff. Sometimes those hints take 4-5 messages, but…
