Well let’s look at absolutely all of the changes:
Playable Content:
Halo CEA - Full Campaign and Coop of the console version of Halo Combat Evolved, as well as 7 remakes of classic multiplayer maps for Halo Reach Multiplayer.
Doom 3 BFG - Full versions of Ultimate Doom XBLA Single Player, Coop, and Multiplayer (Includes all 4 episodes), Doom II XBLA Single Player, Coop, and Multiplayer (Includes XBLA exclusive 2nd episode), Full Campaign of the PC version of Doom 3 (Includes all additional PC exclusive content), Full Campaign of the Doom 3 RoE Expansion Pack (Includes 4 player Multiplayer), Full new Doom 3: Lost Missions Campaign (Completely new Content).
Winner: Doom 3 wins this one by a landslide.
Upgrades:
Halo CEA - Completely revamped Graphics, Sounds, and Music and the ability to toggle back and forth. “Scanning” mode and library of scanned items, allies, and enemies in the game. Halo “Anniversary Classic” multiplayer in Halo Reach portion of the game.
Doom 3 BFG - Slightly upgraded Graphics and Audio to at least PC quality. Small Graphics update to Doom 2 as per the XBLA version of the game. New Flashlight mechanic, now similar to Halo CE’s “toggle” flashlight with energy bar.
Winner: Halo CEA definitely took the cake in this department.
Coop/Multiplayer:
Halo CEA - Splitscreen is still available as an option for Coop, as well as LAN and Online as new features. LAN is a clear upgrade, however online Coop is laggy, and does little to support the game. Halo Reach section runs as near lag free as Reach does, being the same engine, and is definitely the strong point of the game’s Online features.
Doom 3 BFG - U Doom and Doom 2 have both splitscreen and online 4 player coop and multiplayer just as they do on Arcade, but the netcode is laggy, similar to Halo CEA Coop, which makes it less than enjoyable to play. Doom 3’s “Console Exclusive” 2 player Coop mode does not return in BFG edition, making it a Single Player ONLY Campaign. And the Online Multiplayer is extremely laggy and not a good experience.
Winner: Halo CEA once again, but only because of the Halo Reach Multiplayer portion of the game.
The Campaign:
I almost cannot debate this because I love both games, I love both series’ and I have massive nostalgia and fun playing both games. HOWEVER. I must give this to Doom 3. The game holds up much better than Halo CE to modern games, and still feels like a fun new game to play even today. And having not 1, but 5 separate Campaigns to play, most of which are at least as long as CE if not longer, is absolutely amazing.
Winner: Doom 3 takes this one.
Final judgement:
These are both amazing games, and amazing remakes. I cannot choose one over the other. Absolute tie.
