Halo: CEA Vs Doom 3: BFG Edition

Both are quite similar, considering the fact that both are re-releases of two classic FPS games. Since Doom 3 BFG Edition was released today, I wanted to how you guys thin it compares and contrasts to Halo: CEA. Some important things to consider are:

Halo: CEA

  • Contains an expansive (and optional) graphical upgrade
  • Updates the game’s audio
  • No changes to gameplay
  • Removed original multiplayer content

Doom 3 BFG Edition

  • Minor graphic upgrades
  • Brand new missions
  • All of Doom 3’s content
  • Also includes Doom 1 and 2

So which do you think is better?

I have to go with halo CEA. I was never a big fan of Doom, but i was a fan of Wolfenstein.

Well let’s look at absolutely all of the changes:

Playable Content:

Halo CEA - Full Campaign and Coop of the console version of Halo Combat Evolved, as well as 7 remakes of classic multiplayer maps for Halo Reach Multiplayer.

Doom 3 BFG - Full versions of Ultimate Doom XBLA Single Player, Coop, and Multiplayer (Includes all 4 episodes), Doom II XBLA Single Player, Coop, and Multiplayer (Includes XBLA exclusive 2nd episode), Full Campaign of the PC version of Doom 3 (Includes all additional PC exclusive content), Full Campaign of the Doom 3 RoE Expansion Pack (Includes 4 player Multiplayer), Full new Doom 3: Lost Missions Campaign (Completely new Content).

Winner: Doom 3 wins this one by a landslide.

Upgrades:

Halo CEA - Completely revamped Graphics, Sounds, and Music and the ability to toggle back and forth. “Scanning” mode and library of scanned items, allies, and enemies in the game. Halo “Anniversary Classic” multiplayer in Halo Reach portion of the game.

Doom 3 BFG - Slightly upgraded Graphics and Audio to at least PC quality. Small Graphics update to Doom 2 as per the XBLA version of the game. New Flashlight mechanic, now similar to Halo CE’s “toggle” flashlight with energy bar.

Winner: Halo CEA definitely took the cake in this department.

Coop/Multiplayer:

Halo CEA - Splitscreen is still available as an option for Coop, as well as LAN and Online as new features. LAN is a clear upgrade, however online Coop is laggy, and does little to support the game. Halo Reach section runs as near lag free as Reach does, being the same engine, and is definitely the strong point of the game’s Online features.

Doom 3 BFG - U Doom and Doom 2 have both splitscreen and online 4 player coop and multiplayer just as they do on Arcade, but the netcode is laggy, similar to Halo CEA Coop, which makes it less than enjoyable to play. Doom 3’s “Console Exclusive” 2 player Coop mode does not return in BFG edition, making it a Single Player ONLY Campaign. And the Online Multiplayer is extremely laggy and not a good experience.

Winner: Halo CEA once again, but only because of the Halo Reach Multiplayer portion of the game.

The Campaign:

I almost cannot debate this because I love both games, I love both series’ and I have massive nostalgia and fun playing both games. HOWEVER. I must give this to Doom 3. The game holds up much better than Halo CE to modern games, and still feels like a fun new game to play even today. And having not 1, but 5 separate Campaigns to play, most of which are at least as long as CE if not longer, is absolutely amazing.

Winner: Doom 3 takes this one.

Final judgement:

These are both amazing games, and amazing remakes. I cannot choose one over the other. Absolute tie.

Despite being the Doom fan I am, I believe Halo CEA Won here. Halo felt like there was more care put into it. Sure, they just reused the Reach models, but at least they put effort into making a difference. Doom felt like I was playing the same game except with a new flashlight. I didn’t see much of a difference in graphics. However, I liked that Doom had more gameplay than Halo.

I’d have to go with Halo: CEA here, purely due to what they portrayed. Halo: CEA stayed true to its roots…mainly seeing how it basically IS Halo roots. DOOM 3 was far different to its predecessors by trying to make the game more fearful is nature…something which the previous DOOM’s never tried to do. Fear from Doom 1 and 2 came from running low on shotgun rounds, while DOOM 3 tried to make it based on Fear full stop, and it just didn’t work with the game, hell or no hell.

So, yeah, if my past experience with the previous DOOm 3 is anything to go by, get Halo: CEA instead. At least then you won’t be sideswiped by the tone…and you’ll possibly get more of a challenge…Damn Flood.

I’m going to have to go with Halo CEA on this one. CEA stayed 100% true to it’s roots and completely updated the graphics and audio. While I haven’t played Doom 3 BFG yet, it seems like much less care and passion was put into it and the graphics update was very minor.

Although I like the Doom games, Halo CE was also just better than the original Doom 3.

Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary for me. Doom 3: BFG Edition just didn’t really do enough.

Gotta go with Doom 3. So much more content than just the one game. Doom 1, Doom 2 (including the brand new Doom 2 campaign), Doom 3, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil, The Lost Missions, actual multiplayer (instead of remaking the maps in a different game), and unlike CEA’s 3D, more than the HuD and gun are 3D.

Obviously everyone here will vote against me as it’s a Halo site, but anyone capable of being objective can see Doom 3 is the better package.

If we’re talking just in terms of content, then I would have to agree that Doom 3: BFG Edition is the better package. With many campaigns, the incredibly fun multiplayer of Doom II, and a handful of new single player scenarios, you’ll be playing it for quite a bit longer.

That said, it’s quality over quantity for me. Quite clearly, a lot more care went into Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary. The HD retouching they did for it is much more invested. And additionally, they rebuilt entire maps in a different engine. Not only that, but they updated the game to make it play a little bit more retro-like. Comparatively, Doom 3: BFG Edition essentially feels like a port. It’s all there, but hardly touched up.

And I also have to say that when it comes down to it, in a contest between Halo: Combat Evolved and Doom 3, Combat Evolved definitely feels like the more solid shooter to me. I have more fun with it.

agreed.
