I made the CEA wallpapaper my background and chuckled when I noticed 343 Industries has put a subtle touch to the Halo brand; instead of the Marathon symbol between the A & L there’s now 343 Gulity Spark.
Anyone else notice this?
So, I was looking at the wallpapers 343i released for Halo Anniversary, and I noticed that the Marathon Symbol from the Combat Evolved logo was replaced with an image of a monitor. (No doubt 343 Guilty Spark) I figured that it was due to Marathon belongs to Bungie, therefore 343 had to change it. Now, I like the change and the fact that it represents 343i. Its not really that important, but it brought another thought to my mind. What symbol will be on Captain Keyes uniform? They can’t use the Marathon logo from Combat Evolved, and they can’t use the Seventh Column Symbol from Reach. Any thoughts on what the new symbol will be?
Why wouldn’t they be able to use the Seventh Column logo?
The seventh column belongs to Bungie. That is the name of their fanclub and “underground army.” It is the name given to the entire Bungie community.

Thats a good possibility. However, you would think that they would continue to use it as a reference to something. I guess we will have to wait and see.
They could use the open o that has been the halo logo (the last o in Halo).

343 needs to make their own symbol, not Halo symbol, nor the seventh column or marathon, they should design something new that will be their logo from now on. The only problem I see is that there’s a huge marathon symbol on the side of the pillar of autumn and if you look closely, in Guilty Spark’s eye, so how would they change it?
I agree with you 100%. They need to create their own logo. So, perhaps their new logo will replace the marathon logo throughout halo.
After just checking out the Terminal Sneak peak I realized the eye of Guilty Spark was changed from the Marathon symbol, to a new different symbol. I am not sure if it’s because Bungie has trademarked the Marathon symbol or if 343 just didn’t like it, but I don’t like the change. You can’t change little details like that in Halo games. Not only is the eye of Guilty Spark changed but the Halo Combat Evolved logo always had the Marathon symbol as well. If Bungie is the one who said no to 343 using it, then they should’ve thought about that when making it. They need to work with 343 on giving us the best Halo experience ever, like they have always wanted, even if that means letting 343 use a symbol of one of their past games. Even if Bungie is making another Marathon, they should still suck it up and allow this. It should actually be in the contract that Microsoft gets everything from Halo, even the detail look from the logo and Guilty Sparks eye.
If it is 343 who chose to change it, then that was a very bad choice. A lot of Halo fans look at the detail of the game. Once they see the change in that, they will be disappointed as well. It’s completely stupid to change something in a game, especially if you are supposed to be making a complete remake but with updated graphics. I hope someone comes to their senses and realize its important to not change details in a game.
That symbol meant a lot to me when I first saw it. Realizing that Marathon was somewhat connected to Halo just made me thrive. It is stupid to change that just because of some trademark issues. Make it work! Get what needs to be done.

I am also disappoint to see the changes that remove the Marathon logo. Especially since in the Halo universe it stands for Reclaimer.
But does anyone really know if Marathon is still copyrighted? And if so by whom? I know that it was developed and published by Bungie but Marathon is already free on PC and iPad, and on Bungie’s trademark list but there is nothing for Marathon there. It makes me feel that 343i should have no problem about using the logo still.

I assure you, the reasoning behind this is due to copyright. And either party shouldn’t have any qualms about that. Although Bungie should never have been allowed to put the Marathon symbol into Halo in the first place.

Ya but bungie chose to put it in halo which Microsoft owns, so i would guess they have every right to it, no?
I would assume the validity of that copyright doesn’t extend to new games.
If loosing the marathon logo is the only negative thing that happens because of the split, I’ll be happy.
