Im not sure if this belongs categorized as Halo universe. Why did Sgt. Johnson die in the legendary ending of CE by the Autumn’s explosion? Obviously he survived so is this just supposed to be for fun, or a mistake because they hadn’t planned ahead? I would think both since it shows him hugging an elite and more XD. What do you guys know about this?

What does canon mean?
Probably he left Halo after the first encounter with the Flood. Captain Keyes might have told him to run away while they were fighting against the parasite. By doing that, Johnson might escaped to a nearest station to tell what happened. When he returned with reinforcement, Halo had already being destroyed.

I’m sure it was just a joke. But also keep in mind that when CE was made there were no plans for a sequel.

Basically whether an event actually happened in its respective story line.
But yes, that Legendary ending was just a non-canon Easter Egg.
As others have mentioned it was simply a non canon ending intended to be a joke.

He escaped the ring on a Pelican with a handful of others, but they never left the system.
It was there as a joke, obviously non-canon.
