Yes, you read that correctly – I just played Halo CE for the first time.
Backstory: like most people I played Halo here and there throughout the years but never actually owned or played the Halo 1 and 2 campaigns, mostly because I was a Nintendo person during most of the 2000’s. (3 and 4 I did play, but understood very little of it just not having the context)
Halo 5 was/is the first Halo game I’ve actually owned, and yes, I am painfully aware of how awful the campaign is. I’ve put in…idk, but a lot of hours into Halo 5 (I love the multiplayer – it honestly is pretty great; note, I have played multiplayer Halo since at least Halo 2, but just never the campaigns).
So I finally got MCC the other month and am just now getting around to it… just finished Halo CE. So without further ado, my review of Halo 1…
OMG. WOW. WHAT A GAME. WHAT. A. FREAKING. GAME. THIS CAME OUT IN 2001??? THAT IS FING INCREDIBLE. THIS GAME IS INCREDIBLE. I agree that some of the levels were annoyingly repetitive at some points, but those level design missteps really just don’t compare to the overall greatness of the game. FANTASTIC CAMPAIGN
HALO HALO HALO HALO HALOOOOOOOOOOOO WOW
I now understand what makes Halo, Halo. I fully recognize I am literally 15 years late to the hype train. Lol.
Anyway…
ON TO HALO 2!!! (and 3 and 4)
<end catharsis>
The Halo CE campaign is my favorite of them all. There’s a lot of mystery to it, and a lot of answers are left for the player’s imagination. I like that about a story; I think it makes it more immersive. The universe is bigger than the story you see.
Halo CE is great, but also by it’s very nature, it’s the simpilest. Lore and plot holes aside, Halo 3 is my favorite just because I felt it blended the best of the best together. .
What difficulty did you run through on it, and what was your favorite level?
Before I had Xbox, I played the Halo PC demo over and over again, which had the level “The Silent Cartographer”. I think that level will always be my favorite, but levels like “Keyes”, “Truth and Reconciliation”, “Halo”, and “The Maw” are fantastic too.
I did the legendary warthog run co-op on the Maw so many times I can’t count them. Trying to set records of how to do it the fastest and/or racing was some of the best video game memories I had growing up.
C.E. had me hook the first time I played. Played the campaign so many time I lost count.
Halo CE, Halo 2, and Halo 3 were the #1 campaigns, no doubt.
I played CE first time in 2011 (I was 1 year old when original game was released) and thought it was just normal Halo game, then I beatet it in MCC and it became my fourth favorite Halo game (after Reach,3,4).
man that first time the flood came out was terrifying/thrilling/brilliant. I just got my tactics down for how to handle the covies, and those s.o.b. are running scared of these things. Just really tensed up my B-hole as a 13yr old kid.

I couldn’t have said it better myself! Halo CE was and still is INCREDIBLE! It was the start of my Halo fandom! I’m really happy to see someone new playing through CE for the first time and having that reaction. The only thing that you’re missing is all the hype that surrounded the early Halo’s as the trailers and demo’s came out. It was unlike anything you had ever seen. I miss those days. Anyway, I hope you enjoy Halo 2 as well
Despite how long ago it was made it is still a great game.
i think the level design is the best out of all the halos.
CE is my all time favorite. Glad to hear you played!

Same
The first half of Halo 1 is simply timeless. The second half starts great with the impeccable 343 Guilty Spark, then goes down the c***per (the Library “shudder”) but ultimately ends up strong again.
Halo CE absolute game changer.
