Halo CE & Halo 2 should start supporting 4 Player Co-Op

I really do think Halo CE & Halo 2 should start supporting 4 player Co-Op instead of 2 player Co-Op, my mates and I would love to run these campaigns together but we pretty much can’t because it only allows 2 players which is a shame because we all love Halo CE & Halo 2

Would be awesome if this was changed someday

Totally agree! Im shocked this hasn’t already been done!

I sympathise with you on the 4 - player coop issues, but the only way we would get this is if for some reason 343i decided to remake the games, as I think networking and the games codes would probably be a massive problem.

That would be cool.
I’d love for all the games to have cross-play co-op first though.

Hearing the excitement of friends who want to play Halo campaigns and then finding out the original two are duos only is heartbreaking.

This has happened to me many times over the last twenty years.

Yes, I agree they should be made to support 3 and 4 player coop too.

In the past I’ve been against expanding the coop count. The games weren’t designed with that much player fire power and some levels don’t accommodate for more than 2 players like Two Betrayals or Arbiter.

That said these titles also weren’t designed with Bandana and Acrophobia which have been amazing additions to each title. I have warmed up to the idea of expanding the coop count, with a few caveats.

  • A 0 score multiplier skull would need to be enabled to play with 3 or more players. This would disable a plethora of achievements, but not all. The enemy counts and placements were designed with only 2 players in mind. Having 4 guns would make short work of any level even on Legendary. This condition would merely serve as a stop gap for achievement and score integrity.
  • The levels should remain as is. Other than adding spawns for players 3 and 4, nothing else should change. No additional banshees on Arbiter or Two betrayals. Additional players would have to get creative with how they progress with the team. Changing the levels themselves risks introducing bugs or outright breaking the levels.

The netcode for the older titles is already unstable. I don’t expect this feature ever to see the light of day in an official capacity (PC mods already exist for expanded player counts), but hey never say never.

Adding to that, some skulls in Halo 3 will potentially straight up break the level and come with a “use at your own risk” warning. I like the idea of 3 or 4 players having that same situation. I definitely wouldn’t mind messing around in a level that doesn’t have enough banshees while my two other friends complete the level, or being the guy who can only chuck grenades over other people’s heads while the two block the hallway of flood.

That said, a 0 score multiplayer is logical, but I don’t think it’s to the same easy difficulty extreme as the Bandana, Scarab, or Acrophobia skull in terms of ease, and I think there should be very few achievements disabled.

There were softmods on the OG xbox to support 4 player coop in Halo 2

Coop on CE and H2 is already laggy and tends to crashes (in most titles within MCC tbf, but especially in those two since theyre the oldest ones), which is an issue that should be resolved first before attempting to expand the player count imo.
Also ammo placements on the maps and AI spawns could be problematic as its made for max 2 players. Besides of spawns and maybe some extra vehicles/overshields in some levels i dont want them to change the levels risking to break them.

That said im all for expanding the coop player count, yet its unlikely to come to MCC outside of mods due to netcode issues and stuff

H1 and H2 netcode already chugs/fatally desyncs with just two players, reworking those old engines to somehow support four-player co-op would be a Sisyphean task.

What would be substantially more plausible (or likely) would be to port the bsps and missions to Halo 3 (as Kashiiera’s mod council is currently doing), set up the encounters to mirror/be roughly similar to the missions in the original titles, and then have 4P co-op operational on an engine and netcode that can readily support such.

As awesome as that would be, I would think the work required to rebuild two games from the ground up to support 4 player co-op would be way beyond what 343 would be willing to do for MCC at this point. I mean, PC split-screen isn’t looking likely to happen at this point. I would think that’d be far less work than this would be, but I suppose I could be wrong about that.

Can you imagine the teleport shenanigans? Any set of tight hallways will devolve into everyone yelling at each other that they’ll teleporting each other all over the place.

I don’t expect 343 to add this, but I hope someone can mod it. Lord Zedd made some mods for Halo 2 and Reach to increase co-op player count on their respective consoles so it is possible.
This of course is not an ideal for console players.

I have been begging, clamoring, blood sweat and tears for them to add this to the game for close to 5 years now! Haha jokes aside, I just would like to be able to play with more than 2 players in MCC for these two campaigns as it would remove a barrier for these two campaigns to be played with more than 2 players.

The only reason we haven’t gotten a mod yet on PC to support 4 player coop for CEA and 2A is because of lack of splitscreen. If you know about this, the mods on the xbox original console for CE and 2 was able to be only done locally via splitscreen and not over a network by porting over the 4 player splitscreen from multiplayer into the campaign (because that was the only way this could be done). Since this is on PC, we still do not have splitscreen on PC and if 343 is still going to be putting this on the backburner forever, were most likely not going to be getting this I do not think at all. So once again the only way now were going to get 4 player coop is through a feature update to CEA and 2A to support this by 343., we just cannot do this through modding the game’s netcode currently (and I have not seen one mod yet online anywhere about this).

Along with adding 4 player coop, if matchmaking were added into the collection, then it would be easy for the devs to fit in the Matchmaking menu to offer the 4 player coop in there along with 2-3 players to find people (its probably going to be only 2 player or 4 player coop due to the population). Spartan Ops also needs Matchmaking as well.

I don’t know how doable that is, but it would be fun to try if it is.

All the games need 4-play co-op, in splitscreen and online a lá Borderlands.

I think I would rather they work on trying to bring dedicated server support to the MCC Campaigns. Especially if it would help with reducing the lag.

That is definitely something that needs to be done, especially if they want to bring in XP support like PvP matchmaking but for the Campaigns. Right now for Matchmaking, I realizes that the PvE side of the MCC over online matchmaking is definitely lacking in modes now ever since we got both Reach Firefight and ODST Firefight (online for the first time over Matchmaking). While Firefight is ok after a few matches for fun, its get really boring because there is no story or scripted narritive to move things forward (Spartan Ops is kind of cringy but at least there is a bit of a story to those missions, which also needs its matchmaking mode brought back), its all just a wave based grind. Adding Campaigns for Matchmaking (which would have the dedicated server support) would improve the PvE offerings massively and would completely balance out the amount of missions to play on compared to PvP matchmaking over multiplayer maps.

343 has 0 intention of reimplementing campaign matchmaking. It’s a good idea on paper, but in every implementation massive amounts of griefing took place. I suppose they could work out a ban system, but frankly it seems a little ridiculous to get banned while playing campaign. Matchmaking is already an overly aggressive ban hammer.

I agree the campaign netcode is sorely in need of improvements like Reach FF received, but I doubt campaign matchmaking will be introduced.
