I apologize in advance if this has already been covered. I just signed up after watching the PAX Anniversary panel via Waypoint and grew a little concerned at the response to a question.
That question was; will the game skulls include troop modifier types such as “Mythic”. The response was vague, which suggests to me that they would like to make this happen but are not yet sure if they can or will.
This is important to me (and I’m sure legions like myself), because I’ve played Halo CE so much I can beat all the levels with ease on Legendary. Halo CE is what caused me to buy an xbox in the first place in '01, and remains the game I play the most to this day. As excited as I am for the fresh graphics and extra storyline (terminals), I’m really hoping difficulty modifying skulls can be included because it would really make it a fresh new challenging game instead of something I can plow through without effort.
Sure, it would have also been nice to have had some Halo 2 additions (Ghost and Banshee boost/ability to trade weapons with marines, etc.) but I can certainly understand the decision to keep the game play “pure”.
So, this post is simply my entreaty to please, please try to include the difficulty modifying skulls such as Mythic if its at all possible.
That was one of my guys (Sangeheilioz) who asked that question. Yes we were there
The answer we received basically implies that they don’t want to include any skulls that change the behavior of the AI since they want to keep it feeling like Halo. Meaning, no Thunderstorm, Tilt, Mythic, etc. While those last two have a much smaller impact, they do have direct effect on the buffness of enemies. From the Mythic community’s perspective, this is disappointing, but we will enjoy the game none the less

WTF, going a bit too far with keeping the game perfect since it is optional for the player to turn the skulls on.

Ya I’m enough of a purist that I’m still angry we got stuck with Reach’s multi, but the AI skulls are optional. Don’t want it, don’t turn it on. It’s the same logic as the optional high def graphics.
I actually enjoy Reach more at a lower difficulty setting but with certain skulls turned on. Thunderstorm in Halo CE would be EPIC since you’d face all Red Elites and stuff.
I concur, but the beauty of skull modifiers is that they are only on if the player turns them on. Skulls offer the best of both worlds; modified and more challenging play for those that want it, or when non activated do not alter the game play whatsoever.
I think behaviour modifying skulls are not possible in the Halo 1 engine, but things like mythic should still be there. For example:
Catch. Enemies throw grenades more. This modifies the behaviour of AI. To the best of my knowledge, Halo CE does not assign each individual enemy a certain amount of “grenade throwiness” so this skull isn’t possible.
Mythic. Enemies have 2x health. Simple, each enemy has a specified max health in Halo CE and pretty much every other game. Take that number, multiply by 2. Mythic will probably be in CEA.
While there won’t be the same skulls, and maybe they won’t be as “creative”, I’m sure you will be able to make the game as stupidly difficult as you see fit.
