Halo: CE and 2 Backwards Comparability

Does anyone think it would be possible that OG Halo: CE and Halo 2 be made back compatible with Xbone? Or with MCC already being a thing, you think Microsoft won’t do it. I would so love to be able to pop in my Classic Xbox Halo: CE disc and see that classic menu on my Xbone. Would also be nice to be able to have a complete set of Halo games on my One (Set of OG standalone versions I mean, MCC don’t count)

Technically it is possible since OG Xbox support has been added for select titles so Microsoft can add it.

The question is, will they? The only counter-argument i’ve seen is that MCC is already on the Xbox One though Halo 3, 4 and ODST still became BC anyway so that means in theory they could still add Halo CE and Halo 2 based on that precedent.

Although BC support for OG games is there, I believe it’s still a bit more complicated than 360 games - hence why they only had a select few games added to the list. Halo could be possible, then again it may be significantly harder and not worth the effort of the backwards compatibility team. Time will tell if they’ll do it, personally I don’t think think they will

Microsoft put OG halo ce and 2 maybe sometime soon

as far as i know microsoft hasn’t released xbox live compatible games from the original xbox. i think the reason behind it is that they want them to be compatible with the current online services. when the moment comes i think they will release them with functional matchmaking.

Grabbed by the Ghoulies was added despite it being on Rare Replay, so it’s possible. Unfortunately, though, it’s been a while since we’ve gotten updates on original Xbox backwards compatibility, so who knows if we’ll even get any more titles? Maybe it wasn’t financially successful enough to warrant its continuation.

They’ve actually released several such as Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge, Conker: Live and Reloaded, etc…

Right. I forgot that two comments counts as “spamming” on this site.

My apologies.

You are right, then there’s no reason for microsoft to not release them.

I hope so, my Halo Ce & Halo 2 Limited Editon has been sitting on my shelf for 9 years & I’d love to play these games again

I believe it’s easier to make OG Xbox games backwards compatible since that console and the One both run on x86. My guess is there’s no financial incentive to do so at the moment otherwise they would have done so already. I think the reason they released games like Crimson Skies (absolutely incredible) is because the program was new and there’s nothing else like it on the market at the moment. Halo CE and 2 were already available in MCC which is why they weren’t released back then. I’d love to see both games added to the BC library and for them to somehow allow us to transfer saves from the original console, though the latter is a longshot.

I’ve been wondering about this a lot myself. I don’t play much CE but I had recently been playing Halo 2 again but I played on my Original Xbox. I missed it even if it doesn’t look as good as MCC Halo 2/H2A. When they announced BC for OG Xbox games I thought for sure Halo CE and Halo 2 would be in the first batch. Maybe they can make it happen soon!

I hope so but I can’t even tell if back in April was the last wave. Hopefully we will get more this year including the og Xbox halo games

I only think Halo CE and Halo 2 would become backwards compatible if Microsoft brought back Xbox Live Functionality for Xbox Live 1.0 games. Halo 2 would be the standout title from the OG Xbox’s library to showcase this, however I’d imagine that with the legacy team working on up keeping Halo 3, Halo 4, Halo:Reach, Halo 3: ODST, Halo CEA, and Halo MCC, I can’t see them taking away a good chunk of people to work on Halo 2 and Halo CE backwards compatibility especially since both are on MCC. The other standout reason for this is that if Xbox Live 1.0 servers did come back up online the amount of outdated netcode that would have to be improved on Halo 2 to make it work properly would be a nightmare especially when you consider that the code for the Xbox version of Halo 2 hasn’t really been touched since the last DLC came out for it. The MCC port is based off of the Vista port which has so many coding differences that I’d imagine just porting and reworking it would be easier for the legacy team at 343.

343 don’t work on backwards compatible titles, the back compat team over at Xbox handles things like that

well with that information it could be likely that the backwards compat team could be working on it in secret for something like E3, first Back Compat for 360, then Back Compat for Xbox Original, then Back Compat for Xbox Live 1.0, imagine that.

They released Battlefront II, and when you select Online Multiplayer, it just says that feature isn’t available. If Halo 2 were made backwards compatible, it would just say the same thing.

As has been said, since “backwards compatibility” on Xbox hardware isn’t (entirely) true backwards compatibility, and relies heavily on emulation (and possibly modified game files given how all installs are downloaded, even on a disc game) there’s a team designated for building these emulation packages.

It would be nice, but the fact that it would be the vanilla games only gives me no reason to play the originals over the MCC remasters. The skulls, terminals, online, and Recon/Bumper Jumper controls are too good to pass up.

That would actually be really easy from a hardware perspective provided you have an Memory Unit. The Xbox controllers, despite the proprietary form factor of the connectors, use USB - all you would need is a passthrough adapter to plug your Duke into your Xbone.
