Halo Capture The Fail / From Hero to Zero

Okay, so I was on Youtube watching swooz1e videos, and I see one called Halo: Capture the Fail.

If you haven’t watched it yet, watch it. It’s a funny -Yoink- video.

So what I wanted to discuss is how drastically unpopular Halo has become over the years, and it really got me when he was describing the craze of Halo 2 release.

I’ve concluded that Halo certainly is dying.

After seeing all the hype that was built up pre-launch of Halo 4, and the population and sales in first week, I know it’s possible to bring it back.

Halo hit the ground and was dragged through the dirt for over 2 years, and when 343i had the chance to bring it back up to it’s former glory, they failed.

All they had to do was look back at what made the original trilogy successful!
Why don’t the developers just keep the core gameplay the same, just add new weapons, vehicles, settings, features/custom options and maybe even new modes!

Why do they choose that they want Halo to play differently instead of adding onto it?

Even the Campaign has had more and more of a scripted sandbox!

I mean, Halo 4. . . .It’s population has been reduced by over 80% since launch.
I can expect Halo to be discontinued after the Reclaimer Trilogy.

What do you think about this?

This very thing is the thing that Call of Duty is routinely criticized for. There was a comic, of course I can’t find it but it went like this:

At the Infinity Ward Offices

Idea Board for next Call of Duty Game

-Shoot people… with DIFFERENT GUNS!

Wide-eyed stare of amazement from all the execs

I’m a firm believer that games need to grow, adapt, and evolve. How that process happens is up for debate (and is RABIDLY debated on these forums). If this weren’t true, we would still be seeing games that are carbon-copies of Doom with modern graphics.

The death of a franchise is more natural than you think,it might not havebeen 343i who caused it but Halo has been pushed out of its seat as FPS King by many innovative and non-innovative shooters.

Simply put Halo may have made console shooters but things change.

You know what the sad thing is, Halo could still innovate, halo has the lore and the money behind it to give people an experience not found in other shooters but sadly 343 took the easy way out and now wants to be like Modern Grounded shooters. They chose to focus on cutscenes more than game play.

Its like if Christopher Nolan turned the inception sequal into a transformers movie. It might be more exciting for the general audience but it would loose a lot of what made it great.

But changing the core gameplay is what pushes away the fans who have been there from the start away.

AA, Tactical Packages and Support Upgrades, as well as Sprint by default and some other things change the way Halo is played as a game.

All a sequel needs is a new Campaign to push the story forward, new modes, new weapons, new maps, new vehicles, and more options/customization.

Why do the Halo developers decide to keep changing the core gameplay, that makes Halo, Halo?

And why, Impala, do you think Call of Duty stays so popular?

I think that players need to shed the notion that a game is worth playing because it’s new or relevant.

Halo doesn’t deserve to be popular anymore.

> I think that players need to shed the notion that a game is worth playing because it’s new or relevant.

There are about 3 games that I Should have had better sales than Halo 4 this year. Sadlly the casual market (The market which loves transformers moives/twighlight) cant really be trusted to accurately determine quality

> I think that players need to shed the notion that a game is worth playing because it’s new or relevant.

The thing is that the more it stays popular, the more Microsoft is going to milk it.
More games, books, web-series/movies.

At this rate Halo will not survive much longer at all.

Who ever said that popular equals quality?

All these folks that keep saying “this is the downfall of Halo… CoD gets more players on a regular basis” have no idea what they are talking about, frankly. You CAN have a good game that is ALSO popular, of course, but I would never say a CoD game is… not when it basically the same game re-skinned a spat out every year for the last five years or so.

True, popularity =/= quality, but CoD stays popular simply because it sticks to the formula, and when people are playing the new game that everyone else is playing, it still feels like they’re playing something thats fresh and relevant.
Aswell, the zombie mode is very addicting and fun.

I think Halo should infact do what CoD is doing, except add vehicles, options, etc. instead of just new weapons; keep the core gameplay and just expand the sandbox/content.

MLG is happy, the fans are happy, newcomers are happy and want to try out the games that they missed, casuals get to be happy, people who like to argue about which game is better are happy, I’m happy,; Everyone’s happy.

m$hit bought the golden goose and turned it into a lead chicken…nice…

I didn’t say that popularity is proportional to quality. Halo 3 has a lower population now than Reach or Halo 4, but it’s superior to both of those games.

I’m well aware that a game can be both good and popular, but Halo 4 is neither and I don’t see any future titles being any different.

I personally want to see Halo’s population plummet even more.

Why?

> And why, Impala, do you think Call of Duty stays so popular?

CoD is the Twilight of video games: easy to play, no depth whatsoever, but it knows how to draw in its demographic

Halo is the, I dunno, Moby -Yoink- of games: not as many people play it/like it, but it has more depth in story and gameplay than CoD could ever hope to have, with or without these little additions like Sprint and the mods.

Edit: Stupid swear filter…

So that more people will become aware of Halo’s bastardization and hopefully stop throwing money at 343 when they don’t deserve any of it.

That’s what I thought. Stupid notion, too. As soon as Halo stops being popular, Microsoft will likely drop it and then nobody will get what they want.

This all assuming it’s actually not popular anymore, which is untrue. It’s just not in the position that CoD now holds anymore.

Edit: Also, newsflash: more people get Halo for the story anyway. For many, multiplayer’s just a bonus.

Widely criticized, Yes.
Still the fastest growing and most popular game on the market? Yes

See what they did thar?

Adding bells and whistles to the same core gameplay keeps the same fans. New one’s will always show up whn there is a steady playerbase.

The “bells and whistles” that 343 is deciding to add push the fans away, and change the core gameplay/the way Halo is played rather than adding onto it.

Halo used to be a game where you absolutely had to be flying all over the map, getting power weapons, vehicles, etc. or else the other team would get the upper hand and destroy you. This was of course most seen in Halo CE as there was no reliable Sniper weapon (BR, DMR)

Now the sandbox promotes camping like crazy. You can stay in one spot and snipe, after you get enough kills, you can call in for more Sniper ammo.
You don’t even have to leave your base anymore to get a power weapon!

The DMR has laser accuracy at all ranges, which contributes to this problem, aswell as Active Camo and the Boltshot.

Tactical Packages and Support upgrades, as well as other unbalances things in the sandbox change the way people play Halo.

343i could keep the fanbase by keeping core gameplay the same, and just adding more toys to the sandbox, and more modes. This is how the original trilogy works, and this is how other successful games (FPS)keep their fanbases and population.

Alright, let me just bump this one more time.

Don’t bump your thread if you have nothing worthwhile to say.

Like someone mentioned above, not changing the gameplay is exactly why CoD has become stale to many, many people. The devs try “adding to the core gameplay” like you suggest for Halo, and we get different guns, different kill streaks, different death streaks, different maps and the same core gameplay.

The new changes may have pushed away some people who, in my opinion, don’t need to stick around anyway. If they are going to complain this much about simple things that make the game different, good riddance.

The changes have probably brought in more people than it has pushed away. As far as your “population drop” goes…you try making a game to compete with the most popular game of this generation. See how well you do. The population has dropped because people like to play other games, or have other things to do than play games all day long.

Also, don’t use the halo charts peak population as a ruler for how well the game is doing. A lower peak population ONLY means that not as many people play online at the same time. Not that less people play overall.

In conclusion, Halo is still ridiculously popular, 343 didn’t ruin anything, CoD will continue to be insanely popular, don’t judge one game by another game’s population, and get off your high horse.
