Halo books

So recently I picked up some of the original Halo books. Starting with The Fall of Reach by Eric Nylund. I skipped The Flood because once I got about 80 pages in I realized it’s basically just a novelization of the first game.

I’m currently reading First Strike and will continue on to Ghosts of Onyx. However, I’ve taken a look at some reviews of the other books and they’re pretty brutal…just figured I’d ask around and get a few recommendations of what to read and what not to read. I’d like to stick to the story of John and his Spartans and not go too in depth with other parts of the story. But I have heard The Forerunner saga is excellent. So I’m just really on the fence lol

Thanks in advance. My response time might be a little delayed.

You really should read the flood. Some really interesting things happen in it that the game doesn’t cover. Like Master Chief taking a hunter shield to the collar bone. was a good book and I think they covered a little after the ring gets destroyed.

I would recommend Kilo-Five Trilogy. I personally loved them and the first book also serves as a sequel to the Ghost of Onyx if your interested in continuing their story.

I’m planning on reading the books and comics, it’s long past the time I should have. Halo is my favourite video game franchise yet I haven’t read a single book or comic.

You’re in for a good time. Eric Nylund writes ridiculously well so I recommend starting with his work (they were the first written as well)

What would be a good order to read them in?

Is there different series written by different people or is it one continous story line or every book could be read on its own? I’m asking because isn’t there like 20 different books, it’s a little overwhelming. I think I’m gonna have to do some research beforehand lol

Well I can give you info on those three books.

The Fall of Reach tells the beginning stories of the first Spartans which of course means John-117. It is the story of what happens just before the first Halo video game.

First Strike is the story of what happens between Halo 1 and Halo 2. It follows most of the same Spartans that were included in The Fall of Reach.

Ghosts of Onyx follows a different path and tells the story of Dr. Halsey’s top secret “mission” on a different planet. Takes place after Halo 2 and basically during the events of Halo 3.

The other books that are written by different authors are written about different story lines. But one thing Halo is consistent about with their books is that they list them in order of release which is basically a recommendation of the order they should be read in.

My second time reading ‘The Flood’, I would read the chapter or chapters that coincided with the mission. Then I would play that mission.Read the chapter, Play the mission, and so on.This was a really fun reading experience. It doesn’t always work out chapter to mission perfectly but I highly recommend doing it.

That actually sounds like a great plan. Maybe I’ll get around to doing that

I of course listened to the Halo soundtracks as I read too,

That’s what I do. Specifically the time period for the book as well haha for The Fall of Reach I listened to the CE sountrack and for First Strike I listened to the less rock n roll tracks from H2. And so on and so on

I really enjoyed the ones you mentioned, though I don’t remember much about Onyx. That was a long time ago that I read it. I also really enjoyed Broken Circle, and The Forerunner Saga was good, though the storyline dragged a little at times. I hated the stuff by Karen Traviss. It was just a really long “Halsey is literally the devil” hatefest with some plot thrown in as almost an afterthought. Hunters in the Dark was pretty decent, and gives a little background on certain Halo 5 characters, who were rather bland in-game. Haven’t gotten through much else yet, though I do have Saint’s Testimony and New Blood in my “eventually” section of Audible.

My $0.02.

Honestly the majority of the Halo series is pretty good. You will see a lot of hate for kilo-5, but I think people have more of an issue with the author and then shun the books for some reason. From a literary perspective the this trilogy is the best. If you like John Grisham novels or Tom Clancy, you’ll adore kilo5.

My favorite are
Kilo5
Halo Evolutions
Fall of Reach
Contact harvest.

Excellently written. Thank you!

I’ve read Hunters in the Dark, that is good.
