Halo books-which to read more and why?

Hello forum peoples.

I have played every single halo game and i understand most of the canon that goes on throughout the games. but i have not read any books that tend to give people a lot of backstory. actually besides from reading the halo graphic novel (which was great) i havent read any of the halo books at all. Mainly cause i couldnt get around to reading them or i was reading other books at the time.

I know frankie stated that you would be able to play halo 4 without any backstory. but im actually interested in backstory quite a bit.

So what i want ot as you people is that, which halo books or series should i start reading and why? (based on likes, preferences, amount of info or backstory given, etc.)

Thanks!

I would honestly read them in release order.

like from the fall of reach onwards?

Ya.

ittl be a time to power through them all in time for halo 4( what 9 or 10 books including the new one karen travis will be publishing between now and halo 4 release) but i think i can do it.

one question when i reach between glasslands and the forerunner saga which one do you suggest i read first?

Do the Forerunner Saga after you finish the other ones. This way you are completing the main book trilogy. I have sorted all the books out (minus the graphic novels) and they are in the order of which you should read them.

The Fall of Reach>The Flood>First Strike>Ghosts of Onyx>Glasslands - These are part of the Main book Trilogy, and generally a really fun read. You will get alot of Backstory of the Spartans and the Halo Universe from these

Contact Harvest>The Cole Protocol>Evolutions - These are part of the side-plot book trilogy that generally does alot of expansion for what we know. They are all amazing, but you should try to get to these after the main trilogy

Cryptum>Primodium - This is the Forerunner Saga, You can either chose to do these First, or Last… But dont read them in the middle. If I was you, I would save it till the end as a treat for yourself.

My advice would be to ignore them all. If The Fall Of Reach is anything to judge by, the books are rushed, utterly predictable, boring and generally poor titles written to order purely to milk more money. The books take full advantage of the fact that few Halo fans read much, His Dark Materials it ain’t.

I find the Halo books incredibly entertaining. I talked my wife into reading the Fall of Reach with her entire book club and they all really enjoyed it (the only complaint was that they had to wait a while before reading any more Halo books b/c it was too intense to handle multiple in a row). Since that first book, my wife has read all these 7 books that I list here.

I would recommend in order:

Halo: the Fall of Reach (before and leading up to Halo CE, explains the Spartan Program and the circumstances of the Universe leading up to the games).

Halo: First Strike (in between Halo 1 and 2, most importantly explains the other Spartans perspective of what happened on Reach - not the Chiefs and not Noble teams).

Halo: Ghost of Onyx (during Halo 2 and 3, explains the spartan 3 program and more importantly what happens to all other book characters during this time - leads into Halo Grasslands).

Halo: Glasslands (sets-up Universe post Human-Covenant war, leads into the next book by Karin Travis that will lead into Halo 4).
Also, This is the only book I’ve ever read that didn’t bore me at one point or another.

Halo: Cryptum and Halo: Primordium (explains Forerunners era story which will make Halo 4 a richer experience).

New Karin Travis book (continues Halo Universe post-war. Important b/c Halo 4 takes place approx. 5 yrs after Glasslands, so this book will be important in bridging that gap).

So, that is a total of 7 books. Good reading.
And, oh yeah, Halo rocks.

Flat-out the biggest, finest pile of -Yoink!- this forum has ever produced. You sound like Jay Cartwright.

Edit: filter bypass? Oh come on, all four letters were starred out.

In my honest opinion, most of the books are redundant with the Reclaimer Triolgy upcoming. If you want to read more on the Covenant - Human war, sure go for it. Otherwise you won’t learn much.

I’d read Ghosts of Onyx, Halo Glasslands, and the Forerunner Saga. The others can wait.

She is sitting in the same room as me right now on the other couch watching In Plain Sight on netflix. After I wrote that post I read the whole thing to her (including your post) and she said, “Yeah, and I read a lot and still think [Halo books] are good.”

Let me correct this…do NOT read The Flood and The Code Protocol isnt very good either. Other than that read the rest of the books.

In which case, her book club might want to try this series next. It’s right at their preferred complexity level, even if the characters might be a little too well-developed for their liking.

why to not read the flood. i tried to read some of cole protocol just couldnt get into it i got like 20 pages in so i agree on that.
