I’ve been reading through the Halo novels lately to get everything squared away for Halo 5, and I’m in a very confusing position.
It’s been somewhat of a task in itself trying to keep everything straight as I read two, sometimes three novels a day, and reading a few out of order hasn’t helped anything.
So I get terms confused, events mis-remembered, and I can’t make sense of somethings. Oh, and add to the fact that I’m not always sure what is canon, what isn’t, and what the lore community regards as toeing-the-line (like things that are technically canon, but they don’t exactly like).
On to my request.
I would like a list of all of the Halo novels/books/shorts/comics. And I would like to know which is canon, and which isn’t. And a reading order wouldn’t hurt (though I have one I’m following now, but it’s a year out-of-date). And if someone wanted to be extra generous they could throw in a list of things that have been released that gave minor/major info on the universe but wasn’t in the traditional format of a book. I’d ask about a few terms/names/tidbits I’ve seen thrown around, but I’m a little embarrassed about being so out of the loop. I was always a big fan of the lore, but until recently, I had almost no way to access anything outside of the games. And even now I struggle to access some of the materials because I can’t afford to buy them (anything more than $5 is out of my Reachba dum tss). So of course I’m about 14 years behind the most dedicated lore knights, and catching up that much in a few months is difficult.
If this is asking too much, I’d be fine with any sort of contributions. I’ve made it this far by stitching together what I can find, so I can probably make it to the finish line (October 20, 3 days before my birthday) with a little help and support.
Wow, first a tweet, and now a post. I’m starting to think that some people actually interact with the community.
And thank you for the list. I feel a little stupid for not checking the stickied post, but I saw it had no replies, and I didn’t think you could fit everything into one post. Plus, I expected it to be just a general set of rules, few forums actually put in te effort to customize the stickied rules.
I have a request sense we are on this subject. I know the minor rewrites of Halo Fall of reach, Flood, and First Strike were to fix some canon issues. But they didn’t fix a lot in my honest opinion. Is there any thought of rewriting them to help blend in Halo: Reach into the books more fluidly.
Like help on how Halsey was on one day with John then back at sword base, then back with John again. On the same day. Or how John had encountered Elites very early in his Career on Halo: Forward Unto Dawn. Yet he still is like he never encountered them before on tFoR. And how most of Reach didn’t know about the Invasion in the Viery Territory. (Done in the DataDrops. But that was 343I doing damage control) Or how black team wasn’t with the group of surviving spartans on reach and not those spartans to far to recall for they were a few planets over helping on Reach’s neighboring colonies thay were being invaded.
Better explanation on the Pillar of Autumn being back on Reach. The reason Keyes decided not the Rescue Red Team was because Reach was officially Fallen and they had to evacuate. Yet several hours later, they were happily sitting in dry dock. Plenty of time to try a rescue op. I bet many marines would have volunteered to go rescue them. Like all those army and Marine soldiers who purposely sacrificed their lives to help Noble 6 reach the Pillar of Autumn.
And we all have to admit that Halo the Flood wasn’t the best writing in the world. The parts that just dealt with the Marines and Covenant were great. But all the MC parts were a stretch. Halo: New Blood showed how retelling a video game can be done.
But maybe have the book focus more on the Marines. Maybe those who survived like Johnson, Stacker, Chips as well as keep the Alpha base, ODSTs and the Covenant. That Elite and grunt duo was a amazing pair of individuals and the Highlight of the book.
Halo 1st strike. We know from the Radio transmissions found in the Multiplayer maps that there was more to the defense of the generators then believed. You found out more about that marine platoon that Red Team found and how that carpet bombing happened. And how most of the BN still survived and linked up at another generator and linked up with a element of Red Team, Beta-Red, that helped assist them. And that the marines survived the battle and was making their way to a evac point. And that a Pelican, Iron Fist, was sent to extract them when some covenant corvettes were MAC’d on top of Beta-Red’s position. It is unknown if Iron Fist got them out. But it is quite possible. (Maybe where Niomi came from)
There is so much thay can be done that the touch ups in 2010 didn’t and couldn’t do. With so much new lore and information. The only real solution is a complete rewrite of the Books. Keep the core stroy. But add in all the new facts.
I know me and a lot of fans would greedily buy them and happily add them to our collections. It’s just been a long time coming for a recon of all 3 of these books and as the halo universe continues to evolve. These books cause more and more questions then answers.

> Read Halsey’s Journal
I read it. Have the statue and all that legendary stuff. Still LOTS of plot holes and makes Fall of Reach and First Strike hard to read with all the updated lore.
Basically you read reach and are like. That’s wrong, Halsey’s Journal states this. Or that’s wrong, the DataDrops state this. Or that’s wrong cause John for the UNSC encountered this species earlier.
The books are 14 years old. Halo has Evolved more then the Star Wars universe in this time. A complete rewrite to add in lore from the journal, movies, games, comics, etc would be completely justified.
Halo Canon did a nice beast straightening thr time line. Adding all sources at the time. And you can see where Halo Reach and Fall of Reach/ First Strike conflict and even Halsey’s Journal and the recon books/ DataDrops don’t fix it
