Halo Array Question (Cryptum Spoilers)

At the end of Halo: Cryptum, we have the 12 halo rings at the capitol. As they are preparing to escape through the portal, 5 are being activated and 7 prepare to escape through the portal.

For some reason I am remembering that only 1 ring actually made it through the portal and when they come out next to the ark there are 6 new rings already there.

Did Bornstellar’s group just go through the portal with the 7th ring in line and the others arrived first or was I correct in remembering that the 6 Halos that were there were new rings different than the original 12?

Edit: Going on the Halo CEA terminals, would I be correct in assuming that the monitors of the Halo rings were not given their posts until after the aforementioned events at the capital seeing as their are only 7 monitors at their commissioning?

Only 1 ring made it through, but it was severely damaged. When Bornstellar made it to the greater Ark, he saw 6 more Halo rings. These rings were 10,000 km in diameter as opposed to the 30,000 diameter rings present at the Captial.

Yeah, it’s a little strange. When Halo came out there were 7 rings. Then as the Halo universe developed it became known that there were originally 12 rings, of which 5 were destroyed, leaving the originally stated 7 rings. By the end of Cryptum it turns out that there were at least 18 rings in existence at one time, since there were 12 rings at the Capital and 6 rings at the Ark. No one knows for sure what happened with the rings at the Capital, save the one that escaped and the two that were destroyed.

So that means there are at least 16 rings in existence when Bornstellar jumps through the portal. 7 at the Ark (6 new and 1 that escaped) and 9 at the Capital (4 still controlled by MB and 5 that were lined up to escape).

So it seems that all but one of the original 30,000 km halos are destroyed. That last one is so severely damaged, they shrink it down to the 10,000 km of these other 6 rings still at the Ark.

Well, Primordium kind of muddles everything up again.

Yes, at the end of Cryptum, Bornstellar is at the Ark with six 10,000km rings and the damaged 30,000km ring that escaped the Capital. But…

In Primordium, Chakas and Riser are on a 30,000km ring with the Timeless One. This ring tries to destroy itself by crashing into a planet. The Bornstellar Didact shows up and saves the day. This ring is reduced to 10,000km, and we find out that it is Installation 07.

Because the ring started the book as a 30,000km ring, we know that it is not one of the six 10,000km rings at the Ark and because it was trying to run itself into a planet and not sitting at the Ark getting repaired, we can assume it is not the ring that made it through the portal during the attack on the Capital.

So even if we assume that all of the other rings at the Capital were destroyed during the battle, that still leaves eight rings remaining (7 at the Ark and Installation 07).

Yeah, the number of rings and their repective fates is confusing. Can’t tell if it’s going to be cleared up in the next book or was just some sloppy writing.

Here’s something else to think about. What are the 10k rings doing at the Greater Ark at the end of Cryptum, if, infact, it’s the Lesser Ark that makes them?

It’s possible the ring that did make it through the portal in Cryptum was too severely damaged to function.
