Halo 6: Connecting the Games to Expanded Universe

Hello Halo community,

I recently wrote this piece for PlaySomeVideoGames.com on Halo 6. I comment on the need to connect the Halo video games to the expanded universe created by novels and graphic novels. Please check out the opinion piece at the link below:

Let me know your thoughts!

Simply put: YES.
Don’t bother to hold back either, it needs to be that if someone fires up Halo 6 and hasn’t read not only the most recent books but everything before it they’re going to be so confused they’ll run screaming to multiplayer.

Depends what you mean by “connect”. If you mean connect in the way Halo 5 does, then I say no. There is such a gap in narrative between Halo 4 and Halo 5 that is only adequately filled by outside sources; this should not occur in Halo 6. If Halo 6 wants to draw from the extended universe, great; just explain it well and give us context/background.

People that only play the games should be able to understand the lore. Anything coming in from the EU should be introduced kinda how Locke was (Blue team REALLY should have been introduced that way). Any fans that know the EU should have a enhanced experience in campaign.

Essentially the EU should enhance the campaign enjoyment of people that know the EU and also (in a way) educate the “game only” crowd with what is needed relevant to understanding the story and the wider purpose.

I will openly admit I’m not a game designer and I don’t have any brilliant earth-shattering ideas on how to do it most effectively, but all I know is YES, they need to somehow do a better job at it with increased use of terminals, intel, a codex, ANYTHING… because I firmly believe failure to do so in Halo 4, is a good bit of the reason why the lore is now in this mess. I think they had a fantastic vision in mind for where the story arc was going, until (non lore diehard) people complained they didn’t get anything that was going on in Halo 4, and it seems like there’s a good chance that feedback contributed to them making such dramatic changes to their plans.

This. Don’t make it like Halo 5 which REQUIRES you to know EU or the campaign will suck (To be fair, it sucked even if you read the EU) At least let people who don’t know EU have the ability to follow it without being completely clueless

NO MORE PROMETHIANS!!! Kill them off with an EMP or something i really don’t give a damn, Bring back the flood and put the covies back at the top!
The promethians takes away from the halo feel, and they just plain dont feel forrunner. Ive been a die hard fan since combat evolved and have read the original few books. We had 10 years of seeing forerunner tech.

There needs to be at least references but don’t make it so you need to know all of the extended universe. Actually references could be the best way to do it. Bring up stuff like the rebels or the Didact without making it vital for the campaign. If not then explain it well for the people who have no clue what that is
