Halo 5's new CTF mode

As mentioned in the new Community Update, there have been some small changes made to CTF.

https://www.halowaypoint.com/en-us/community/blog-posts/community-update-required-reading

What do you guys think?
It plays a lot more like classic CTF, with a few notable differences:
Flagnum remains, but equally powered to Magnum
Flag Melee is no longer a 1-hit kill
No Flag-carrier NAV indicator unless carrier is receiving damage - this one is interesting. I think I like it.

Overall, it sounds like a step in the right direction after Halo 4’s atrocious CTF mode.

Side note: These are the types of updates I enjoy reading.

I’ll take the tweaks.

It’s not a 1-hit melee but you can cap a couple shots before a melee, so it works making sound when needed.

I like the taking-damage indicator.

Sucks not having regular speed but the defensive options make up for it.

I’ll take having the ability to drop the flag.

Slower speed is fine with me, especially because it gives reason to flag-juggle

while also not juggling allows you to be more subtle about your capping while still having the option to speed up if you get spotted

Its mostly good news, I don’t really like the spotting mechanic. If you see the flag carrier clearly enough to get some hits in then call out their position to your teammates don’t have the game do it for you, even having Spartan chatter for it would be better than throwing on a big shoot me waypoint.

I’m liking the new CTF. Glad flag juggling is back. Hopefully they fixed the flag stolen, flag dropped thing. Was never a hug fan of flagnum, but glad they fixed it, it seems. The spotting mechanic is different, I’d rather see how that plays out instead of just assuming first.

I assume the spotting creates a NAV that shows the movement of the Carrier (possibly for a few seconds), which is better than a callout in terms of info being provided. It’s precise and allows you to show your team the path of the carrier.
Additionally, it lets the flag-carrier know that they are being tracked… which is a completely different mechanic from just having callouts. This is like the hit markers on grenades… yes, it provides additional info to the person getting the markers, but the person who was damaged knows that you know, which makes them have to react differently.
I’ll have to try it to really know.

This could add a strategy of “do I shoot him and let him know he’s being tracked, or do I just call him out and have the team surprise him?”.

After hearing that it wasn’t 1hit to kill, I was I little disappointed, but I’ll get used to it. It opens up more opportunities for cqc and eliminates that stale mate of a flag carrier being in a tight corner. You know, when you have no splash damage weapons to flush them out, yes some people will stay there for backup.

Not big on the spotting feature.

A team that’s using mics and calling out should have a big advantage over a team that isn’t, obviously, but the tagging feature will take some of that away as the game will basically just be doing it for everyone.

Hummm those sound interesting. I’m eager to try them.

Sounds fine, but ill miss the one hit kill melee…

I missed this one in my read through. I think I like it too, especially if you’re playing with randoms who took the flag God knows where. Good to know if your carrier is in trouble.

The rest all sound pretty solid to me as well.

I’m not going to buy H5 because the game looks like total garbage and 343 is incompetent. But I would like to drop a few points.

  1. Flag dropping is back. Shocking, not being allowed to drop the flag was the worst design decision in the history of CTF.
  2. Why would you move at 80% when you have the flag, it makes no sense, especially since the other team can sprint around the map. This makes the once immensely popular gametype in H1-H3; a vicious grinding nightmare trying to cap a flag.
  3. None of your announcements are exciting, it’s identical to the Xbox One announcement. You hype up these announcements like everyone’s excited, and the entire community is just staring at you in disbelief at how stupid you are. No one is going to buy this product, deal with any of these design decisions, or support 343 in any way. You’ve done everything in your power to destroy the Halo franchise. I think you’ll succeed with Halo 5. This games looks like such total garbage it’s incredible. I’ll be shocked if you outsell Halo1. Coming off the already built in 12 million fans you inherited from H3. I’ll doubt you sell 4 million copies of this terrible game.
  4. Why don’t you actually fix MCC, or let a competent company fix it. So we can play actual Halo, not this garbage mess your creating again, no one was happy with Halo:Reach, no one was playing Halo4, and now Halo 5 has expanded on everything that didn’t work in those 2 games. Why can’t we just get Certain Affinity, to take H2A and turn that in to Halo5. With perfect Halo gameplay, it was immensely fun and the entire fanbase would like an expanded full version of that gameplay. Why do we have to deal with 343s nonsense garbage, no one in the halo community ever expected, wants, or will deal with these gameplay mechanics. Halo5 has nothing to do with Halo, and if there wasn’t a halo branding on it no one, absolutely no one would buy or play this garbage game.

Dont forget that you can still thrust with the flag. Watch the gamescom invitational they thrustered multiple times =]

Didn’t they drop the flag when they did so though?

They thrustered with and without the flag. Just watch the videos and you can clearly see it.

It shows the enemy carrier to your team, Snicks, not your own carrier.

CTF might be too easy now (as the carrier )
there’s no nav so people won’t be able to track you.
You can drop the flag juggle and use trusters making you faster than ever.
You have a 5sk weapon when holding it.

As a ctf specialist scoring will be easy for me. My concern is defense. Play with randoms and the new carrier friendly changes will make defense much harder.

My gameplan, 1 person go out as a distraction, the rest of the team defend, leave the scoring to me. (In master chief voice )

Why the flagnum if ur going to repeatedly drop the flag, I guess that’s why its not 1 hit from a flag carrier. Whatever half the time people play CTF (or the jerks anyway) are the ones that camp and only shoot like as if its slayer. They keep doing it to have a higher k/d and run away at times to keep it that way. Like always they could just spawn camp the enemy team without needing to capture the flag. There better be decent spawns for this mode when that starts happening.
