As of right now I have only made it up to Mission #13 but I know what happens at the end of the campaign so please be careful of possible spoilers ahead.
As you all know, Cortana turn on Chief and now Cortana is the enemy as she tries to go for the Mantle of Responsibility. At the end, Osiris rescues Blue Team and they all go back to Sanghelios together where Halsey utters “Took you long enough…” and that’s the cliffhanger. Now, I have no idea why people are upset about the ending cliffhanger. To understand pretty much everything in the campaign you need to know the basic backstory of these three pieces of lore: Hunt the Truth (This was less about hunting Master Chief and more about the anomalies in deep space, i.e listen to Season 2.), the Fall of Reach (To understand John and Halsey’s backstory.), and Escalation/Halo 4’s Terminals (Regarding the Mantle of Responsibility.).The entire campaign shouts at you that you need a basic understanding of the lore or you won’t get the cliffhanger or some of the other very subtle lore-influenced bits in the campaign. I found the campaign very well done in accordance to the lore and I think this is one of the best campaigns I played so far.
With all of this in mind, I have a question for those who know the lore: Did your knowledge of the lore leave you still not understanding the campaign or did it leave you loving the lore even more? This is for those who don’t understand the lore: Did you still sort of understand the story or not? What mission(s) didn’t you understand?
I loved it even more, seems at least someone at 343 believes in doing things that Bungie was afraid to like bringing in Blue Team. To fully integrate the lore is one of the best decisions I’ve seen 343 make, Halo has such a rich and deep universe full of stories and information, to simply leave it separate would have been a great disservice.
I also look at the “Hunt the Truth” marketing as a big smoke screen to divert us the players away from revealing the truth. Look at the forums, so wrapped up in the Locke vs Chief topics that the real threat went unknown. Glad I was wrong about Locke too…seriously…
I will also admit, there were a few points where I went all giddy like the little references to the Blue Team’s training days.
Oly oly oxen free!Only downside I can think of was that it was alot to take in all at once.

I completely agree. A lot of the content in the campaign is literally a call back to something in a previous game or in some piece of lore. Adding the lore into the game is amazing and gives everyone that much more depth. One more thing I can’ understand is this: If you play the campaign solely for the Master Chief then I don’t think you’ll like the story nearly as much as someone who has a knowledge of the lore. I just don’t understand why people are both upset about Chief and this ridiculous cliffhanger that we all knew was going to be in there.
So… to understand the game I have to go read books and media? Isn’t that why many people hated Destiny?
The Cliffhanger has nothing to do with all that extra stuff you said below spoiler. It was almost just a fart, but at least Chief finally met Halsey again, though I wish there was some greeting between Chief and Arby.
Lore and what happen in the story that people dont like are two different things.
I guess some people that know nothing but the games can be confused about a couple of aspects when they get to Genesis but the rest of the story is pretty straight forward.
I’m sorry, but it is in no way acceptable what they did with the plot.
All the nonsense in bringing Cortana back aside, she is quite literally the stereotypical ‘evil AI’ written about in so many other generic science fiction stories. It’s like every fear I had about this game came true in the worst way possible. But whatever, I suppose. I’ve chosen to jump ship and not overly worry myself with the train wreck 343i keeps turning the franchise into. For me, the story stopped at Halo 3. Halo 4 and basically everything 343i has done has just been a trippy cryfreeze nightmare in the Chief’s head.
I really enjoyed the differnt references such as the whistle from back when the Spartan 2s were training as kids in one of the missions, as for the ending I didn’t mind it but sometimes it fells like halos going to crazy with its story at times,I still like the game and I will always love halo, there was just a lot of new and strange things happening in this game that will take some time getting used to. While it was not the halo I was expecting it was still altogether a interesting and fun experience and congrats to 343 for keeping the series we all love going.
It made me understand everything, but the ending is a major cliff hanger.
One problem was resolved, but the more prominent danger wasn’t fixed and was only launcher further.
It’s the same reason why people didn’t like Halo 2’s ending; you killed Tartarus and stopped one Halo from firing, but Truth still got away and was about to fire all remaining Halo rings, yet you are left with Chief on his way to stop it. Same deal here.
I loved the campaign, but it is completely understandable why people don’t.
they ripped off the worst Sci-fi ending to a series in recent memory, Mass Effect 3

I completely lost my -Yoink- when I heard that. Hearing Blue Team’s old all-clear signal used in such away, and having them all comment on it, very nearly brought a tear of joy to my eye.

I agree and I disagree about that. This turn in the story was pretty heavily foreshadowed in the Saint’s Testimony short story. Add to that the fact that the Forerunners were actually utter jerks and hypocrites when it came to the Mantle of Responsibility, and there is substantial support in the lore for this twist. I may not like it, but at least it wasn’t just pulled out of thin air.

The problem was that Destiny had so much time and room that there really isnt an excuse for them not explaining their own lore. The other problem was their lore was built for the game yet was ripped out from the game and placed on their website. The thing about Halo is that the lore, the lore many are telling people who arnt up to date with to go read or watch, wasn’t specifically built for this game. It was its own independent Halo lore built for what ever purpose. Its not lore that was built for the game and then taken out.

Basically this. Halo has been building and expanding it’s lore for YEARS before this game came out, and all 343’s been doing is finally integrating that lore into the story of the games.
I think the character shift of this villain makes a whole lot of sense since absolute power corrupts absolutely and if I’m not mistaken there was an intel recording that says something is corrupt or wrong with the domain, also if I recall correctly that a previous Halo’s terminal illustrated that some Forerunners tried to upload themselves into the domain and became monstrous or corrupted when returning to physical beings.

Exactly what I was wondering. I’m thinking halfway through halo 6 right as they stop the halo rings or destroy them all they’ll have this giant galactic allience mass effect 3 style and then the flood and precursors will finally show up for humanities testing it’ll be a three way war for the mantel the creators the created and the biologics and I feel they’ll destroy the halo array so the only way they can stop the flood is from a huge alliance and or live forerunners

After 5 games you’re going to need some understanding of the universe in general to know what’s going on, so yes.
And no, people hated Destiny because it had no story what so ever, and then tried to sell you the story in expensive DLC packs. And those stories weren’t even really that good.
Besides that I’m glad that Buck is back!
