Halo 5's ADS/Smart Scope

So I know this is one of the more ‘‘controversial’’ topics, but why so much dislike towards a system that works practically the same as it did in Halo’s 1 - Reach?

Essentially, when you zoomed in with your weapon and you was shot, you are immediately descoped, and this is the same way it works in Halo 5. The only notable differences is that it actually takes up space on the screen, all weapons possess Smart Scope/Smart Link (which hasn’t been present in any other Halo), and that you actually look down a’‘holographic sight’’ of some sort. Not even all weapons look down a sight, its more so you ‘‘get close’’ on the weapon, like the AR and Brute Plasma Rifle for example.

I can understand why people call it ADS, but why not call it what it actually is, instead of something it so slightly resembles, that being Smart Scope/Smart Link? Why call it something that works entirely different, such as in COD, when you zoom in and are shot, you stay zoomed in, but instead flinch? You don’t flinch in Halo 5, you just get descoped. If every weapon had the Classic BR Sight (present in Warzone) would you call it ADS then?

On an added note, the Smart Scope/Smart Link lore is that every weapon has a system that is configured to your VISR (Visual Intelligence System, Reconnaissance),and is a system in place for assisting Spartans?ODST units to properly identify enemies, and assist in targeting (such as in Halo 3 ODST) just if you didnt know. I believe that is correct.

I love smartlink

I don’t mind smart link but the animations doesn’t necessarily fit how it would work IMO… as a Spartan and you are wearing armor with a helmet and visor you wouldn’t be able to see the sights as you do with say the BR & DMR… you wouldn’t hold the weapon up in that traditional manner. It’s supposed to be “smart linked” you wouldn’t see sights at all. It should just be a zoom.

Change for the sake of change.

There was nothing wrong with the previous system and now we have zoomed weapons that obscure more of the screen and weapons that shouldn’t even have a zoom like the sword for example.

Some people don’t like the minor increase to accuracy that you get when scoped in. I personally don’t mind it (Now that I’ve gotten it taken off the left trigger), however it should be removed from the melee weapons in my opinion. I don’t think it benefits game play with those weapons in any way and seems to make the lunges a bit too far for my liking.

I dont see why they even bothered to change it from previous Halos, oh wait the CoD crowd ! And it increases your accuracy while zoomed in, sound familiar ? No not as drasticly as in CoD or other shooters, but still it does.
So yes Halo basicly has ADS. Meaby next Halo will be actual CoD game ?

To answer your question: it is because Smart-Link in Halo 5 doesn’t work the same as it does in the previous games. Using Smart-Link increases the accuracy of automatic weapons, so it’s not all aesthetics like 343 initially lead us to believe. Before, automatics were strictly close-quarters weapons, but with the new system they are effective at medium–and even long–ranges. Not everybody welcomed this change.

EDIT:
Also, Smart-Link is in-fact a form of ADS. Call of Duty did not define this term.

This may sound stupid, but why did 343i mislead players about properties of Smart Scope ? I just don’t get it what they tought they’d gain by it, anything else than more angry fans ?

Not defending them by saying this… but when they said Smartscope didn’t affect your weapon’s performance over unzoomed it was in an early build of the game. They just changed their mind at some point. As is all pre-release info about a game, it may not be 100% accurate when the game releases.

Odd, suddenly after Halo 5 everyone is calling Zoom “Smart link” to sound cool.

The animation, I don’t mind. I’m upset that 343 lied when they said that smart-scope wouldn’t increase accuracy, and it does.
Also, some guns are barely even functional without smart-scope, take the Hydra for example, and the energy swords lunge has been decreased drastically unless you hold in the smart scope button.

Agree 1000%

There was absolutely no reason to change how zooming looked in Halo, other then trying to appeal to fans for COD,BF,TF etc. You could make the original zoom look super amazing if you’d like. Put all sorts of information on the screen.

Maybe 343I should stop with this whole “trying to appeal to other games fans” and oh…I don’t know, try to appease there own fans instead.

Thing is, if you’re a halfway decent player, the Smart Scope overlay on-screen won’t keep you from knowing where your enemy is or prevent you from getting a kill… A good player is AWARE of their surroundings and the location of the enemy and will know where to look regardless…

With that said, anyone that complains about Smart Scope, for this reason, I just can’t really take them seriously… Sorry, but it is not any more difficult to track the enemy while zoomed.

Well thats true, I was foolish not thinking such obvious reason :stuck_out_tongue:

I would have liked that they informed community more about changes, ofcourse I understand that they can’t talk about everything relating to the game pre-launch duh, but discussing a simple gameplay machanic change would have been nice.

For the same reason why they’ve mislead the player base and outright lied about numerous other things to do with H5

No, it’s changing for the sake of making each weapon viable.

Because slapping a 1.X zoom or whatever the AR has, on the AR in Halo 3 would automatically make it a viable weapon?

This game is not Halo 3.

I’m challenging the notion that just slapping just a small zoom effect on any random weapon will somehow make it viable.

It’s not a small zoom effect. The Smart Scope for the sword and hammer increase their lunge distance. The Smart Scope for the SMG and AR slightly increase range which makes the reticle red at slightly longer ranges. They’re useful, you just have to know how to use them.
