After restlessly perusing the forums and seeing all the hate people have to throw at H5, I’m shocked. Now granted, there will always be people who whine about the slightest thing, and are stuck living with nostalgia goggles, etc. But I just don’t understand how people can actually try to justify condemning this game.
Let me tell you a short story. I played Halo: CE back in 2001 at 7 years old. I saw stars. It was amazing. I played Halo 2. It as well, was great. Halo 3 was the first midnight launch I ever went to, where I met a lot of friends, and planted the seeds of a lot of memories - one of the best times of my life and one of the most memorable multiplayer experiences of all time. I loved ODST and Reach, too; friends and I chipped away at those daunting Vidmaster challenges, had epic moments, laughed like idiots, and crushed each other in Forge. Now, Halo 4 stirred up somewhat of a hornet’s nest with the community, but I for one thought it was a great game - albeit nothing like its predecessors - with some things that could stand to be hugely improved. I’m 21 now, and I own every single book, and am still catching up on Escalation, but naturally life gets in the way. So when someone mentions the word “Halo” to me, it’s more than just a video game, it’s a sizable chunk of my life, and one that I’m proud of.
Now, I know I’m not the only one who has had these experiences, and that I share this passion with a lot of people, and that’s fantastic, but I digress. After playing the H5 beta and feeling a great many things - disappointment, disorientation, concern, frustration - and, subsequently, seeing the changes 343 has made to the game’s core formula, flow of gameplay, multiplayer and cooperative mechanics, how they’re throwing in all the extra little details like differing HUDs for playable characters, bringing back skulls, patching the issued that plagued H4, and going the extra mile to put together an excellent and riveting ad campaign/podcast that left us foaming at the mouth for more, all these things have got me thinking: when was the last time a developer went this all-out on a Halo game? I was skeptical at first, but despite what many have to say about the direction 343 has taken, I’ll be very surprised if this isn’t the best Halo game in an awful long time.
TL;DR: I’m a long-time Halo veteran, and mark my words: Halo 5 is going to kick major -Yoink-.
