What types of weapons, vehicles, and equipment (or armor abilities if that’s what you want) do you want to see in Halo 5? You can of course pick anything from past Halo games, but I also want to hear if anyone has ideas for anything new.
See. For some reason, I feel that Halo 4 expanded the sandbox too much. I know, realistically, there is only a handful more weapons than previous games, but it feels so much larger with things I never use. I wish we could kind of cut down some of the fat and get back to the big weapons

Halo 4 actually had the smallest sandbox from all of the other games. In fact, Halo 4 removed more than it added.

Going by the Weapons List (Yes, I know there are vehicles as well), Halo 4 has ~30. Halo 3 had about ~28-30 (Flamethrower and Missle Pod, although they were rarely ever featured, included). So. It’s pretty even int that field.

Halo CE only had 8 weapons and I think only 4 drivable/flyable vehicles, with a few more that you couldn’t use. But yeah, CE had by far the smallest sandbox.
In CE, every weapon had a unique role which was beneficial to gameplay. In Halo 4, most weapon archetypes have two or three clones, lowering actual weapon variety. furthermore, many power weapons were upgrades of other loadout or power weapons and are for the most part uninteresting.

That’s been a problem for a while in Halo. Reach tried to mix that up a bit by adding the Focus Rifle, Grenade Launcher, and Plasma Launcher. However you can argue about the effectiveness of the FR and PL, personally I think they were far weaker than they should’ve been.
With that being said, having weapons with similar roles isn’t a bad thing, it’s only bad when they perform those roles in the same way. Halo 4’s AR, SR, and Suppressor are all the same gun with slightly different values for damage, ROF, and spread. The Halo CE Plasma Rifle fired accurately, could fire semi auto, and slowed down enemies, compared to the CE AR it was performing the same role of an Automatic Rifle in a completely different way.
Repetitive performance of the same role is what leads to Halo 4’s sandbox feeling so cluttered.
No armor abilities at all. Halo doesnt need more weapons. Take out the boltshot.
In my opinion Halo only need the BR, maybe Light Rifle and DMR, an assault rifle, a sniper, rockets, shotgun and thats it. IMO

Yeah, do I really need to explain why this won’t work well? Because, it won’t work well for a new Halo game. If you want a really limited sandbox, create a map for that in Forge or play Halo CE. Removing features that add to the Halo experience has already been proven to be a very poor and unpopular move.

“Automatic Rifle” is not a role. The role of a weapon is in its use; the plasma rifle as an anti-shield, mid-range support weapon while the assault rifle was a close range backup for the pistol. Plasma rifle countered overshield while the assault rifle countered camo. Besides their firemode, both weapons are as different from each other as rocket launcher and sniper.

It is a way of classifying weapons. Automatics, Precision, Pistol, Melee, Shotgun, Sniper, Explosive, Support, and Incendiary. Sure you can also classify them by ranges: Close, Med, Long. Both work well, and together you can get a more accurate description and identification of a weapon’s use.
Plasma Rifle could be classified as an Automatic/Semi-Automatic Rifle that works optimally at mid-range, is very effective against shields, and overheats.
Of course if you don’t classify them by their Automatic/high ROF it becomes harder to put them together in the same general class. That’s in part to how they perform the role of their class differently.
I’m sorry if you’re having a difficult time following what I’m saying, it’s just how I’ve learned to classify and approach weapons.

I agree that many of the new weapons in Halo 4 were uninteresting, specifically the Promethean weapons. They really are just clones of weapons that already exist. I don’t necessarily think there should be more weapons, I’m just trying to see if anyone has any ideas for new weapons that are actually NEW. Then again, maybe Halo doesn’t need new weapons at all.
Precursor biotech for Halo 6 maybe?
