Hector Rodriguez, eSports figure… His perception of the 2017 World Championship
It looks like Halo’s really doing well, doesn’t it? This is the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP… Where are the crowds? There isn’t ONE… the event, while production values for streamers is good, is in a TENT! The winners will receive a million dollar check in an empty tent… SMH.
What happened 343? I think there’s a problem here… we have an entirely different community than what we once did with Halo back in the 2006-2009 time-frame, when large crowds would show up at MLG Halo tournaments and support Halo, and was growing and growing. And the thing is, I think the kind of gameplay H5 offers, it’s a completely viable eSports title, deserving of big tournaments, big crowds… but WHAT is 343 DOING?
These pros deserve better… Halo deserves better…

Maybe people just don’t care about it any more. Before we never had much going on online but now the Internet is filled with lots of gaming content and people are no longer interested.

Or halo just isn’t popular any more. When I think about the subscriber count halo youtubers are always on the low end compared to other bigger youtubers. For instance I’m sure a youtuber named nickatnyte once said they were thinking of maybe doing Halo 5 videos but he has over 2 million subscribers and he never did maybe because it wasn’t worth doing.

Halo isnt that popular anymore sadly but the future looks promising. Also there’s a lot more competitive games out there now like Rocket League. I literally had to decide if i wanted ti watch the Rocket League stream or the Halo one yesterday

You can make more money now then ever before in Halo.

Maybe its time to go back to what Halo was actually based on and not shove it into the competitive side?

You say that after getting 2 Halo titles that catered to the pure casual community, after tremendous competitive growth in the MLG community prior to the release of Halo: Reach… 6 years of cheesy Halo. The general community interest shifted, much of the competitive community, including a lot of OG Halo fans, up and left. Only the most dedicated remain.

It’s not Halo shifting back to an OG competitive formula that’s killing the series, it’s the shift in community interests. It’s the best thing they could’ve done, the problem is that damage is done and that the series didn’t shift back sooner. Too little, too late…

Original trilogy Halo fans don’t get excited over pizza AR skins and Infection montages/off-the-wall social game modes (to the current magnitude), and industry-trend “choose your loadout” shooter, like much of today’s Halo community. And it’s almost as if now, much of the Halo community ridicules Halo players that are truly skilled at the game and diss on eSports and competitive gaming, when back in the day, it was cool to be good at Halo, no matter who you were.

That’s my general perception.

Thing is, I HOPE it looks promising… but this is 343 we’re talking about.

Halo fans say, and are told this, year after year, that the future looks bright… then a highly broken or incomplete game launches and the community unfairly dwindles because product (and community) perceptions aren’t what they should be.

Again, just the way I see it… Halo has had a rough few years to say the least. People get burnt out…

The main stage is in a tent? I’ll have to see since I’m going today :]

Actually I’m pretty sure those pictures were completely cherrypicked, the event doesn’t take place in a tent.

Well then, let’s get down to the real story then… this video seems to say otherwise.

I can see them doing the qualifying days a bit more dialed back, but the final day had better be done right!

I mean you could look at any of the previous streams on twitch where it is quite literally packed full of people. Those pics were taken outside the actual event and a bunch of people are spreading them around crying that “Halo is dying”

Edit: there’s a stream right now on twitch, wait till the match ends and it zooms out and tell me how many people are there.
