Halo 5 Voice Chat

TLDR: Are you expected to use voice chat (headset) when playing Halo 5 Social Slayer (on a semi-high level)?

I am aware that it gives you and your team benefits to be able to communicate during a game.

However, since I play mostly social and am way older than the average player, I hesitate to use voice chat since I suspect there will be a lot of negative/aggressive/unneccary comments that will make the overall experience less enjoyable. Also, I am a non-native English speaker which makes using voice chat less natural.

Then again, I now seem to be getting matched up with high level players – high Diamond, Onyx and Champ – that I suspect expect you to be active in the chat to optimize the chance of your team winning. Yesterday, I even got a message from a team mate who was clearly disappointed in me not hearing his call outs.

Any thoughts on this are highly appreciated.

If you’re regularly playing with high-level players, they would probably appreciate it as it would reduce unnecessary lost matches due you not being able to respond to their callouts.

If you are uncomfortable, you could compromise by keeping yourself muted but keep game chat open so you still can hear the callouts.

As long as other people can understand your callouts, your English shouldn’t be an issue in high-level matches

I think most players care (or should care) more about where the enemy is rather than your accent, English proficiency, or age, so go forth and speak

Ok, thanks for your replies, guys. I’ll give it a try.

So, I have been playing for 1-2 hours now with a headset and there is noone talking. Just a few random noises here and there.

Am I doing something wrong?

No, most people nowadays either don’t use a mic or are in some type of private chat. I wouldn’t worry about communicating in social since there’s no rank on the line and most people aren’t talking in the game anyway.

You can trying asking if anyone has a mic as you get into a match. Another way to check is through the scoreboard and look beside the gamertags:

  • A speaker icon means that player is in game chat (but won’t tell if you they muted themselves or have a mic plugged in) - A textbox icon means they’re in party chat and cannot hear others in game chat.

I’d say a majority of players don’t use their mics unless they’re in a party. I’m one of those people, however, while we may not respond to you, just know that your callouts are helpful.

And, don’t worry about bothering anyone else. As long as you’re actually giving callouts and not just yelling randomly or playing music, most teammates shouldn’t mind. Even if they do, they can always just mute you anyway, so no harm done.

Thanks again for you replies.

Now that I started using a headset it almost feels a bit disappointing.

We’ll see if things change when I resume playing ranked.

Pretty much a waste of time to use your mic in H5 IMO, unless you are on an actual team. No one uses mics in H5. They essentially killed mics in H5 since they didn’t include the ability so see who is griefing on the mic in the lobby so you can quickly just mute them and not every one. I haven’t heard any one on a mic in H5 in months, heck probably almost a year now. Pretty sad really. MCC has some who still use a mic but even there is few and far between. I must admit it is one thing I kinda miss. Too bad the yoinks who grief others ruined it for all.
