I’ve come up with this theory independently, if anyone shares or perpetuates this idea after getting it off of this post, please throw me a little credit. Just mention my gamer tag.
Here we go:
I have 3 major points that I’ve taken from the Halo 5 trailer. A lot is speculation, but I think it’s speculation on a solid basis.
Below you will find spoilers from: “Halo: Primordium”, “Halo: Rebirth” (Silentium’s epilogue), and possibly Halo 5 (if [BIG IF] I’m right).
Ye have been warned.

The only place we’ve ever seen such an expansive desert in the Halo universe is on the Ark. In Halo 3 there is an entire level dedicated to road tripping through this thing with the UNSC and Guilty Spark. On top of this minor suspicion, the large planet in the trailer seems to bear similar features to that in the center of the Ark. So we have our potential location: The Ark.
-
This is possible because the Ark is confirmed to be in existence in Halo: Primordium. This is where (spoiler!) the UNSC recovers a badly damaged 343 Guilty Spark, who later escapes after commandeering the UNSC ship. So we know the Ark survived the activation of Installation 04’s replacement ring, making it a possible location for Halo 5 story/gameplay.

(SPOILER)In Halo: Rebirth, there is a segment where the IsoDidact, the remaining handful of forerunner, and the soon-to-be Earthlings gather for a meeting on the Ark. This is after the array has been fired, and Offensive Bias has defeated Mendicant Bias. Mendicant Bias is then judged and sentenced to eternal exile with his conscious mind reduced to one thought “atonement”. He is then buried in the middle of the Ark’s desert, deep in the installation’s foundry. While he was able to help Chief and Arby via indirect methods (source: halo 3 terminals), he is obviously still physically trapped in his tomb. After being stuck there for 10,000 years, simply thinking “atonement”, he could either be extremely pissed or very helpful…

My conclusion: (Possible Halo 5 Spoiler)
There is a good chance the “Thing” in the trailer is Mendicant Bias being resurrected by the Chief, hence his lack of worry in the way he composes his body language during the surfacing of the “Thing”.
Obviously it could just be weapon of the Didact’s, but that would just be too obvious if you ask me.
That is the analysis of the trailer. Now the speculation:
Is Chief rouge? Hiding from the UNSC after he learns of events of the end of Spartan Ops, Season 1? This could explain his need to seek out the Forerunner’s betrayer for help?
It would make sense that such a powerful AI could have some way of resurrecting Cortana…
Point being: It was a short, teasing trailer, but upon further analysis it could be giving us a glimpse into a fascinating story that will unfold in Halo 5.
What do you think? Am I bonkers?? Let me know!
