Halo 5 System LInk/Networking

So I am so excited for Halo 5. Like unhealthily excited for it lol. I am having my buddies come over with their Xboxes/tvs for a Halo ‘LAN’ party on the 27th, its tradition. Now I’m pretty sure that their is no system link support, can any one shed some light on it or link a thread for this topic. Does the game auto detect a router and knows that players are on the same LAN, and bypasses sending all that game data to Live and then back to consoles, I think that’s what MCC did, might be wrong IDK. I just don’t want lag, because we are starting with campaign co-op and that’s a lot of AI which makes for some lag if internet is slow(like back in the day Firefight with slow my slow DSL shudders) My internet is pretty good now so I’m not worried if that’s the case, but just want to have a seamless experience for me and my friends. How are you guys/gals planning on playing Halo 5?

Single player by myself.
Multiplayer by myself.

 Free-For-All

I don’t live close to my buddies anymore so we will all be getting online to play co-op at the mercy of network issues.

If it works like MCC, then it will autodetect the local network.
That game also has no system link function, but it still detects if consoles are on the same networks and connects them that way, but you still need to be online (so you can sign in).

Pretty sure there is zero support for LAN. The MCC only supported LAN if all systems can access Xbox Live, so your switch/hub would need an active Internet Connection.

They have been quoted a few different times in stating it will not be available for H5 and currently isn’t being considered. I agree this is a bad idea but remember this game started creation when ALWAYS ON was how they thought the Xbox One was going to operate so LAN wouldn’t have seemed so important.

They have single-handedly removed Halo from the competitive market for good not including LAN support. Dedicated servers or not, unless everyone is in the same area of the county compared to the servers, the connection PINGs will not be the same. LAN is around <1ms ping (so small it can only be measured by software) Yet, servers on the West Coast to East Coast will run pings upwards of 80-120 which is huge in FPS games.

Not to mention, if you have 8 people connected in one building for a LAN to Xbox Live, the chances everyone is still running the same speed is doubtful. You’ll have to use expensive managed switches and all kinds of networking add-ons. That being said, no tournament will have just 8 systems, they’ll need at least 16 but more likely a minimal of 32 for anything PRO level. (also remember no split screen so 8 systems for one game).

Thanks everyone for the quick replies.

They’ve removed Halo from the competitive market huh? Tell that to 343i because they plan on having a $1milliom championship series…

also, why are you comparing Local Area Network connections to cross continent connections to dedicated servers?.. Anyone who was planning to play on a LAN is obviously close enough to be playing on the same dedicated server, considering that they would have had to get together to play on the LAN.

anyway, your comments about connection speeds in the same building is also nonsense, as the game data is transferred over the local network… The Internet connection is only used for verification purposes… We’ve already seen Xbox one games at tournaments despite the Internet connection requirement. 64 consoles in one building for Battlefield 4. no issue…

also where do you think all this arena footage came from? That’s right, dozens of Xbox Ones connected to each other in the same building… No mention of issues…

What about gaming lounges in countries that don’t have access to good internet speeds, I don’t have a problem with not having system link as long as the internet works as a verification, and the xbox ones use the local wiring and a switch to link the xboxes together. If that isn’t the case then yes, Halo 5 has been maybe not removed but definitely downgraded from the competitive scene, cause only being able to host tournaments online with everyone having issues like poor internet speeds and even issues like can’t connect with other players due to strict nat is not a fair playing field. You also have a situation where the one host player with the better connection has an advantage over non-host players. That’s fine for casual play, but not for legitimate tournaments which seems to be more common these days.

Anyway, halo was the genre that created the competitive gaming scene through system link, i find it very strange and disappointing when games like COD: AW has system link on xbox one and halo 5 doesn’t anymore. I’m guessing black ops 3 will have system link, how can you guys let third party developers take over the competitive scene on your console.

Please someone correct me if my information is misguided. Gaming lounges are on the rise so 343 you want this game dominating in them, please release an update that allows support for system link or something similar cause this game is so worth it.

So post launch, LAN party update. Thanks everyone for input first and foremost. Everything went perfectly, everyone showed up, hooked up to my network(wired) no issue at all, everything went smoothly. Well aside from Legendary, oh man is it hard lol. We were yelling at each other revive me, get that elite, take down hunters. So much fun. Let me know how your experience with Halo 5 went, did you play solo, co-op or jumped right into matchmaking.

Great to hear! I’m glad it was a good experience!
