Halo 5 is a yet to be released game that i have done some digging to find out some of the plot for. Locke as seen in halo nightfall was an O.D.S.T before becoming a spartan IV the newest spartan which differs from the others because it uses volunteers. Locke’s squad was killed and Master Chief went AWOL and Locke is hunting him down somewhat emotionally. Why, probably because he wants to get some rage out.
So lets talk about why Master Chief went AWOL,
Master Chief has probably gone AWOL because he found something that says Cortanna is alive or found out about a deadly force/bad guy to be stopped this is still under debate.

So i’m back to confirm Master Chief is holding Cortana’s data chip in the first halo guardians add. The chip is the in dog tags master chief was holding but i am assuring you cortana 7 year life span was reached so either master chief has it as a reminder of her or it will be useful to him somehow
Also the Prometheans from halo 4 might be returning in halo 5
I think the chief is going to try to find Halsey and bring cortana back but she is working with evil covanent (witch I think are a different aliance because I belive arbiter and his elites still have a alliance with the unsc) so the chief is going to find Halsey and bring cortana back but the unsc thinks he is working with Halsey and the evil covinent
in my opinion, halo halo 3 ends with, I did not like the new covenant faction and die cortana

No it seemed as though Locke didn’t know much about Chief until he was briefed and now he has a sense to protect not get revenge

I think your right, on both counts. I think, possibly through Halsey, that they did find a way to bring cortana back. Maybe trough some information on forerunner tech she acquired from the Janus key? Could be why he allegedly killed those people at the embassy. Working for Halsey, Jul, and Jul’s new covenant in order to bring back cortana. Doesn’t seem farfetched, and who knows what greater threats he might encounter on that path…
I think it’s a situation similar to Sgt. Doakes and Dexter Morgan on the show Dexter, with Locke having the role Sgt. Doakes had and John-117 having Dexter’s role.
I don’t think that this game will be so much about Cortana because of Hunt The Truth. This series has shown more complexity in the halo universe than before. I do think that Dr. Halsey is going to be a key point and maybe Cortana will come back, but I think that this game will be more about humanity advancing and the chief abolishing the current system and regime under which ONI works.

I doubt chief is going insane. I believe that he is the only thing keeping humanity from sinking into an abyss of genocidal madness.
