First off I’d like to note I have been apart of the Halo community for over 10 years (halo2 on) and have always agreed mostly with the way Bungie and 343 created their multiplayer environments. After picking up halo 5 I felt a drop in my stomach after playing a few games. At first I thought it was weapons, then the general physics of the game. I finally pinpointed it… the RADAR to SPEED ratio…
When in an encounter, you have most of your focus on the player you are currently shooting at, Although a small amount of focus is on your radar. This is so you can set yourself up for your next target before you are done with your current. Now this thinking isn’t for all players (you know who you are). This was the basis/strategy for many good players in the past, at least for the smaller maps. Taking this away creates an environment that shortens the gap between the “skilled” and the “not-so-skilled”. This was true when powerballs, overpowered weapons, etc. were added to halo in the past. You don’t see as many overkill etc. because of this radar system.
Now being as 343 is, they probably wanted this to create an environment that shelters less skilled players to have a larger player base. But what you don’t understand is you are weakening everyone overall. This closer gap does not allow for players to improve as easily.
A couple options is to widen the radius for everyone or shorten the distance for players in sprint.
I feel like the “original” halo multiplayer environment has been lost, and I’m sure many agree with me.
It’s next to impossible to see any enemy players without it before its to late, give us a bigger radar to combat the faster game-play!
I agree radar needs to be increased. If sprint and spartan charge weren’t there I would’ve accepted it But now you can cross almost the entirety of the radar range with a spartan charge which is extremely hard to dodge unless you have crazy reflexes and crush opponents with an energy sword or gravity hammer before they even have time to react.
It also steers Halo closer to a twitch shooter where whoever see’s the other first usually gets the kill and where reaction time is more important than strategy. Not saying that it is a twitch shooter, but Halo 5 is definitely closer to the CoD/twitch shooter style of gameplay than the original trilogy was.
I’m surprised there is no official radar thread. OP this has been a heavy topic of conversation on WP.
The radar is currently set to 18m in arena. It should be bumped to 22m.
I also think it needs to be bumped up a bit. In order to make the radar effective they need to address this. I know other sites have mentioned this quite a bit. I haven’t heard it talked about much on here. But I haven’t been on here long either.
I’m constantly relying on radar in H5, it saves me from getting killed all the time.
it’s fine and doesn’t need to be changed.

The range is way to small, it needs to be bumped up to 22 or 25.
I’m fine with my radar, don’t know why everyone is whining about, dodged lots of assassinations, shoulder bashes, and vehicles by it, works fine for me. If you want a better radar, there is a spartan ability that will grant you that.
I just get killed without any time to react.
The radar needs to be removed if we get a competitive playlist.
After watching some YouTube clips of H5G’s Beta… I’m wondering why 343i took out the elevation indicator on the radar… In order for a player to be able to distinguish if the threat is above or below their current location

Agreed. It needs to be removed.

Agreed, given the current state of movement in Halo you need a much larger range than we currently have now. You can bearly make counter plays in this game, especially in FFA. Don’t get me wrong, you can do it to a certain extent, but it is a much lesser extent than it was in previous Halos. The radar most definitely needs a buff, it’s been addressed quite a bit in the Forums and other places, so hopefully 343 take our views into consideration. I don’t want to have to solely rely on an expensive headset to discern where people are on the map, or which direction they are going to flank from.
The uses for radar in Halo 5 are far more limited than they were in other installments. I did notice there’s an ‘edge’ radar that indicates general direction of a target outside the precision range, but 18m is too small as Spartan Charge can pretty much cover the entire radar’s range in one swoop.
Accounting for the outer-rim detection radar that behaves more like Destiny’s motion tracker than traditional radar, I’d say a 22m range with the rim indicators going out to 25m would be acceptable.

- The Armor Mod is in Warzone only.
- The complaints about the motion tracker being too small come from gametypes like Slayer, where it has an 18 meter radius. Gamemodes such as BTB and Warzone have a base radius of 25 meters, if I remember correctly.

To be honest, just this simple change could turn this game from broken to alright for me. Bump up the radar from 18m to 25m and I’m good. In previous Halos, using the information your radar provided to make decision was an art.
You could rely on it, and the more you got familiar with it and learned to read it at a glance, the more awareness you had to fight and make good decisions on the fly.
Of course that’s for GOOD players! Yes, once you learned how to use the radar it did make it very difficult for people to sneak up on you or even come close enough to do things like assasinations or spartan charge.
In Halo 1-3 getting hit in the back was a big deal. Now it happens casually. You’re moving through an area and get hit in the back. You’re moving through an area and get spartan charged. You’re moving through an area and get shot from god knows where.
In Halo 5 someone in the same room as you can kill you without you ever even knowing in what corner they were standing. But new age Halo players (the ones 343 made this game for) will hate though.
“It’s fine for me” they will say. Well of course it’s fine for you coming to us from call of duty. Hey 18m is better than nothing right?
Right. But it’s worse than the 25 veterans have known and before people ask us to stop whining and accept change, I want to remind everyone that this radar issue is not about not being able to move on from the past.
It’s about recognizing that a critical element of what made a game “good” is now gone.
If I removed the oil from your car and asked you to “move on” and “accept change”, you would be pretty justified being pissed a little bit with that drastic “change” seeing how it dramatically shortens the lifespan and the enjoyment you will get from you car.
Innovation isn’t automatically progress. Killing the radar was a slap in the face for hardcore Halo players. RIP the classic halo formula where all you had was your gun, your radar, your nades, and your f0kn SKILL.
343 doesn’t understand the product they inherited.
With all these added audio and visual queues I think the radar is fine. IMHO of course. Even when riding solo with randoms I don’t find Myself having an issue anymore his many months in.
you can absolutely having an opinion but I feel like if you been playIng since launch, saying things to yourself like “damn it I would have seen him in old halo” and getting angry that’s on you.
you should know by now that you arnt and unless you been going back an forth from warzone. Then sure you’re expecting more cause your thinking of the mod.
Unless they were crouching earlier at the 18m mark or I was I scoped in let’s say at the 18m I don’t get caught by surprise often. Most ppl shoot long before the the 18 mark unless they crouching or know you scoped in(snipers).
All together tho Spartan chatter, power weapon icons and grenade markers there are plenty of ways to know what’s going on in your surroundings.
but who knows I spent most of my halo 3 days playing MLG with no radar so might be a lil biast lol

That’s not because no radar playlist were always praised by the time of halo veterans. And they dint remove your oil they idk reduced something else lol I’m bad this.
sure when halo 6 is on the table voice you opinions at of the 2 but I wouldn’t want to see it randomly increased now in these current maps. No way someone was sprint outside your 18m and still hit you with Spartan charge unless you were caught deep in a smart scope duel

I agree with all your points.
I think it’s clear (and I even said it) that increasing the radar range now would lead to many of the Halo 5 “tricks” being near impossible to pull off anymore (at least on good players). For example, bump up the radar to 25m and all of a sudden:
- Good players don’t get run up on with the Spartan Charge - Good players rarely get stomped by the Ground Pound - Good players almost never get assasinated - Good players barely ever get flanked - Good players slow their pace as they start thinking more instead of just reacting, causing very good players to go on rampages way more often as masterful map control becomes possible (through skill and situational awareness)Basically, the classic radar breaks all the cheap tricks 343 implemented for noobs to get even.
Bringing it back would change the game, and in my opinion it would actually make it a Halo game again, and not this Cod style twitch shooter that we have now. Again new age halo players will hate that I called Halo a twitch shooter but what do you call a shooter where you only become aware of enemies a fraction of a second before the engagement is on?
It takes a different kind of focus to be good at this new generation of Halo gameplay. Even as a fan of the original trilogy I’m willing to adapt but at least let’s be honest with ourselves and recognize that it is in fact a different game.
This isn’t an “evolved” version of Halo, it’s not Halo. They might as well change the IP’s name now and run with their new fan base.
