I like the look of Halo 5 overall, and I’m not going to give a fully weighted judgement until I’ve played the beta and gain a better feel for the game. I would however like to analyse a few things that have been shown in the gameplay so far.
Pro’s
- While ideally I’d like sprint to go entirely, I feel that the tradeoff between sprinting and your shields recharging is a huge step to reduce its impact, particularly in the “running away” department that we saw a lot of in Halo 4- Equal starts are back, ensuring there are no more OP weapons off spawn, such as plasma grenades (perks being removed as well)- Weapons are static spawns on set timers (no more random locations/times), meaning Power Weapon control and Map control have returned as well- I like the fact that everyone spawns with a thruster. It’s not OP, its balanced and requires a certain degree of skill to use, though a 4 sec cool down seems a bit short
Cons
- I don’t really like the voice announcing the medals, the “double kill” in particular just sounds weird- I can see the “climbing/grabbing ledges” ability lowering the skill gap and removing the skill in trick jumps etc- I’m undecided on “ground-pound”, while the idea of having to aim it carefully seems balanced, the fact that it is presumably a 1HK and has an area of effect worries me slightly (I’ll reserve judgment on the shoulder charge until I see it)- Some of the medals seem a bit unnecessary, but that’s just my opinion.
On a side note, I’d like to say that the Halo version of ADS does EXACTLY the same thing that “scoping” has done previously. None of the mechanics associated with ADS have been introduced (such as slower movement speed/ hip fire being less accurate). It is simply a visual representation of zooming in. Just to say that, while according to the canon it isn’t necessary, canon can be argued for a lot of different things in multiplayer changing, so I don’t really see it as a wholely valid argument for change. I personally don’t mind either ADS or scoping as they both accomplish the same thing.
And… discuss.
If you watch Ready Up Live’s videos, you can hear that the Spartans actually talk during battle, mostly whenever they kill someone. Not really a fan of that.
I didn’t catch that bit but I can’t see myself enjoying it too much. I prefer the “less is more” approach when it comes to sound/voices during a game
These are all my opinion and I’m too tired to give reasons for them so whatever.
Pros:
- Sprinting shield penalty- You can see your health bar- Smart scoping- Sliding- Ground pound- Thruster pack’s return- That hovering thingy- Charge- Most of the weapon designs- The map designs (so far)- Conversing Spartans- Equal Spawning- Static weapon spawns- Clambering- Crossfire gamemode
Cons:
- The design of the Prophets’ Bane- ALL of the weapon sounds- Why does Jeff Steitzer sound like he’s constipated?- Sprinting animation- That hit marker sound is not needed- The absolute clustercluck of medals- That brick on top of the DMR
In the middle:
- That grenade rocket launcher thing
And there you have it, MY opinion.
i liked the gameplay but i agree
I like the gameplay in general, I always liked the thruster and its equal starts. I can deal with sprint as well.
It’s the Destiny style screenshot of your characters before a game, Spartan callouts in game, announcements style “double kill” (Constipated Jeff), giant “R”'s and “B”'s in the after game stats next to the red and blue teams.
I mean seriously, we know what colour team we’re on. This whole side of things I feel that “less is more”. It just comes across as flashy new additions that can be a bit annoying.
I doubt these will be removed unfortunately as they may be seen as superficial, but I think differences like these build up and make a big difference. Jeff sounds SO much better in the old Halo’s than the dubbed and computerised versions now.

Yeah, not a big fan of any of this. In particular, the victory posing and celebration you see your team do after a win really rubs me the wrong way, too; I’d expect Spartans to show a bit more class/professionalism instead of acting like a high school kids.
The actual gameplay looks good, though I’ll reserve judgement on the Spartan Abilities until I’ve played the beta (Shoulder Charge, Ground-Pound etc).
As long as I can still play “Bumper Jumper” and smart-scope can be used by clicking right stick I’m fine with that. I’ll be annoyed if its stuck at Left Trigger and is only available on right stick on one control scheme (without jump/melee on bumpers) I’ll be a bit annoyed.
It’s the little gimmicks and extras that are worrying me, it just seems unnecessary and childish, not to mention it reminds me of Destiny and COD too much.
“Enemy UAV inbound!!!” is not something I want to be hearing.
i like the whole moving skill the Spartans can do

Seriously that DMR scope and the weapon sounds are terrible. The weapons sound like laser toy guns. They should’ve brought the new Master Chief Collection weapon sounds back.

Apart from ADS being simply a new visual representation of zooming in, it also makes the zoomed in scope itself much smaller. It used to take up nearly the entire screen in the past.

Its mostly to facilitate those moments in matchmaking when no one has a mic. They’re basically doing the job of callouts so you can work somewhat as a team when no communication is taken advantage of

I’m curious if we’ll be able to toggle it on/off. I personally don’t mind it if I’m playing solo, but if I’m playing with a team that will be communicating, then it will just muddy up the feedback.

What I’m hopeful for (as I have been since Halo 2) is that Clans will make a return in Halo 5 (possibly even integrated instead into the Halo Channel?). If they did, I wouldn’t mind seeing the team stuff before and after showing who is on the team, possibly the Clan Emblem, etc. This would especially be awesome if the Clans could stream/post these videos on Twitch/the Halo Channel for others to see. Otherwise, I’m torn about the inclusion of it. I know that 343i is wanting ot continue to tie MP to canon, which I personally love, but I also know there’s a fine line between giving those smaller and infrequent things that beautifully ties them together, and being annoying (possibly even game-altering cough cough ordnance drops cough). I guess we’ll see more when the Beta is released, get first-hand impressions, and then see more when 343i is able to react to fan’s comments from the beta.
I think it would be nice if they kept the same voice as the one from Halo 3.

if they are all wearing helmets why does it sound like they are calling from across the map instead from their coms.

Its just a beta I’m sure they will polish it

Unless thier helmets are built like soundproof rooms, there’s gonna speech that bleeds out of the helmet. And if you’re that close to your squadmate, why bother switching your coms if they’re gonna hear it either way?
