Halo 5. Positives and negatives.

This is an open discussion!! Bungie and/or 343 fans please feel free to comment and let me know your thoughts, feelings, and opinions on this topic. I’ve been a Halo fan since I was a kid. I grew up with the franchise and watched it make many changes throughout it’s long history. This Christmas I was able to buy an xbox one along with Halo 5 and the Mcc. After playing and beating Halo 5 I was left conflicted. Positives first. The game play was improved from the 4th installment. Halo 5 had larger areas to fight in and explore. Giving players a little more choice in how they choose to tackle a challenge. Vehicle sections for the most part were no longer tight liner paths or small combat arenas. Promethean weapons were tweaked and balanced to make them a bit more viable AND fair. (Looking at you Boltshot and suppressor). Knights were actually fun to fight this time around. Shooting and destroying the weak points on the Knights back not only damaged the enemy but gave the player a visual reference as to how much damage he or she was actually doing. Hunters will swat away grenades with it’s shield which is just awesome in my opinion. The controls are very tight and responsive and even though I’m not the biggest fan of the overall art direction I have to admit the game looks great. Last but not least the music. Halo 4 had some pretty good music but nothing incredibly memorable. The menu or main theme for Halo 4 was quite beautiful and is a good example of how the maintain the feel of Halo while being something new and unique. 117 and Pylons are the tracks that stand out the most in my memory and that’s about it. Halo 5 continues the trend of having an overall forgettable soundtrack WHICH SUCKS because like Halo 4 there IS good music to be found. Really any rendition of the Osiris theme gets me pumped. It’s epic and wondrous at the same time. Scavengers, Osiris suite, act 1, and the music that plays during the level glassed are the pieces of music that stand out to me the most. That’s pretty much where the positives end for me. The games biggest flaw is it’s story. It’s all over the place. I had no idea who Blue team or Osiris team are, Buck and Arbiter feel forced and thrown in, Palmer, Lasky, Roland and even Halsey pretty much take a back seat and have no real concrete place in the story. Spartan abilities are a cool concept but become pretty much useless on heroic or legendary difficulty, friendly a.i can be incredibly frustrating at times, and then the constant fade to black in cut scenes. Seriously any time a character brought up any thing remotely interesting in the cut scenes it would then just fade to black. “Why is Cortana the problem? Because she refused to die when she was supposed to?”- Roland. That’s an interesting concept! I would have loved it if any of the characters present during that scene had anything thing to say about it but fade to black. “You’re not the only one here because of him.”- Locke. Oh snap! Master Chief saved the universe and all the races that live in it which would definitely inspire people to want volunteer for the Spartan program. I wonder what Buck or the rest of Osiris think about this. Fade to black. The writer or writers had interesting themes that they never really capitalized on. I could go on but this post is such a jumbled mess of ideas lol. In closing I don’t hate Halo 4 or 5, I don’t hate 343, and I don’t hate anyone who really enjoys Halo 5. The 5th installment had some good ideas but it failed to capture my imagination like the originals did. Halo ce-Reach are not perfect games but they all left an emotional impact on me. If you made it this far you’re crazy lol. What are your thoughts. Please please let me know. I’m open to discussion or even debate. In the end I just want to talk about Halo and see a game series I have come to love truly improve and become the bad -Yoink- emotional roller coaster I know it can be! Thanks for reading!

Liking Halo 4, a fellow man of culture.

For future you might want to space out or reduce the length of the post or a TL;DR.

May you edit this? I can’t even read it.

My apologies for the wall of text! I can narrow all of it down to one question. What did newcomers and/or long time fans think of Halo 5?

My first Halo game was Reach so I guess that puts me somewhere in between long-time fan and newcomer. I think Halo 5 is mostly fun, and I appreciate that they are still trying to fix it up and refresh important playlists like BTB, but it really should have had split-screen.

The halo 5 matchmaking is rather great and I appreciate the free updates plus the focus on refreshing playlists and infusing them with new variants. Also, forge is a really underrated aspect. What the community can do with the tools provided, and 343’s willingness to give those tools and help foster that relationship, is really special for a major studio to do.

Though, the campaign is repetitive and not well-told.

TBH, I don’t have the energy to properly respond to these types of threads anymore since they’ve been done so much. I’ll just say that H5 confirmed to me that 343 was solidified in moving forward with the modern abilities route and Halo resembling the originals is becoming more and more distant.

TLDR.

One of the negatives things about Halo 5 Guardians is that there’s too much in the way of armor. There’s 200+ different types of armor but nothing that is truly unique or stands out. I’ve talked about this a few different times in various threads. Halo 3 had the Hayabusa Armor (unlocked when you found all 13 skulls) and Recon Armor (gifted by Bungie or by unlocking all the Vidmaster Achievements). Those armor sets, especially in the earlier years, made players stand out to everyone! It showed that they had worked to achieve something so they stood out from the crowd. Halo Reach had the Haunted Helmet for those whole managed to reach the highest rank of Inheritor. My point being that there’s no way for players to feel special and stand out from the crowd. The over-saturation of armor choices makes it impossible to tell whats special, what’s rare, what’s gifted, and what was just a standard release on launch day.

343 Industries already confirmed that Halo Infinite will have a Halo Reach inspired depth for player customization so hopefully we’ll see unique armor unlocks as well rather than 200+ different kinds of armor.

In addition to that, too many of them are just plain ugly

I feel like some helmets definitely stand out (Timmy, olive, fotus) but most armor just seems identical. Idk, maybe slight color customizations or variety of armor could help with this.

Also, how do you quote just one sentence of what someone said?

I appreciate this post more than can possible expressed, not just because of length, but its content.

I think the shields and the badly designed somersault on the Banshee is the worst myself, and my favorite is the variety in weapons (and forge obviously)

I played Halo 5 for the first 3-4 Seasons took a Long break because of the missing Arena updates (Pistol start etc.). Till this year I was Pretty addicted to comp Overwatch.
Besides that I played Halo 3 on the MCC for quite a long time but as an EU Gamer it is not enjoyable anymore (US Server).

Thats why I started playing Halo 5 again and I love it!!! I was able to convince two of my old teammates to play Halo 5 with me and till now we’re grinding Arena. Halo 5 is so much fun again! The current Arena Settings are great and my shots are connecting much better than in H3 MCC. I love the quick movement, the graphics, the game design and the pistol meta. I also like to get exp and earn REQ Packs (Skins, armor etc.) that is what I miss in MCC tbh.

I do miss some classic gametypes like King of the hill, Invasion was dope too (Stronghold is the WORST) and most of the maps aren’t as good as the classic Maps but that won’t stop me from getting my old Onyx rank back and reaching lvl 152 lol.

Yep, thats Pretty much it. Keep Halo alive.

Fight the Covenant!

I think Halo 5 is good and definitely has a lot going for it but it could have benefitted from a better story.

There’s a little “source code” button that lets you mess with the BB code. It looks like a slash in between two square brackets.

Thanks, I found the button but then what, sorry, I don’t know what BB code is.

In order to avoid derailing the thread too much, I’ve responded to you in a PM.

Yeah, I feel like every single armor idea that had been sketched/thought of was used. My opinion, there’s just too many

I played Glassed today, and was thinking “I really like that music”. For real.

As many people have said the armor unlocks in halo 5 are pretty terrible. The main problem is that you get all the armor, assasinations, skins, stances etc from random rec packs so you have no way of controlling what you get. Like people have previously stated the armor you have is in no way indicative of any feat or achievement or even that you saved up credits for a long time to buy it. It simply means you were lucky enough to get that item in a rec pack. On top of this you only have 2 options to customize your spartan (armor and helmet) which really limits creativity and the potential to have a unique looking spartan. You can also change your visor but you can barely tell the difference between visors on most helmets.

To make the whole randomly getting unlocks even worse they decided to have 229 armor sets, 240 helmets and 63 visors. Having that many options may seem like a good thing but many of the helmets and armor are simply variants of each other that look very similar to each other. And as I’ve already written, the visors do not change your spartan’s appearance much at all and there are 63 of them!!! This was obviously a way to generate more rec pack sales by adding a ton of redundant items. In no way could you possibly justify having 63 freaking visors. The emblems were also used to generate rec pack sales as there are 310 of them!! Gone are the days were you could create your own emblem and have something you unique.

All that said 343 has said they are going more towards a reach system for customization hopefully we will not see a repeat of what happened in halo 5.

As for the campaign, in my opinion it was one of the worst in the series. The gameplay, which is obviously not a small part of a video game, was pretty good. But the story was so bad that it made it hard to enjoy. I could not care less about blue team or osiris and nothing in the story-line or dialogue made me do so. Combine that with rehashing the same boss like 10 times and it makes for a not so great experience. Let me just say that I still think it is a good game, just below the standards I expect from a halo game.

The thing that in my opinion 343 nailed is the multiplayer. While I have my issues with the ranking system, the gameplay in the multiplayer is outstanding. Might be my favorite multiplayer of all the halos. I know many people don’t like sprint and clamber and whatnot and I don’t know in what direction 343 will go with halo infinite but they have proven that they are capable of making a very solid pvp experience.
