(Warning spoilers ahead) Well after years of speculation and discussion Halo 5 is out and the story has been told. In the story there where a lot of things that where misunderstood or unexplained. A lot of these questions may have answers. some clearly in the lore or some possibly explained with a bit of speculation and theory.
1.HOW IS CORTANA ALIVE? In Halo 5 it is stated by Cortana that she found her way into the forerunner Domain. When the Didacts ship was destroyed it entered slipspace. The domain has been speculated to exist in slipspace. 2.WHY IS CORTANA EVIL? In Halo 4 Cortana ejected all of her rampart parts into the systems of the Didacts ship. What was still sane of Cortana said goodbye to chief in Halo 4 and faded away. The rampant parts of Cortana was that which made it to the Domain. Creating a “cured” form of a insane Rampant Cortana who was not Cortana to begin with. In a nutshell the Cortana we know died in Halo 4. What is left is a pale reflection of all Cortanas worst parts. Trying to defend humanity as always. only by means her true self would never have approved of.3.WHAT IS THE DOMAIN? The domain is a ancient Precursor Creation going back millions of years. it is pretty much a mental library with thoughts and memories of those who are long dead. The forerunner’s where able to access the domain in there days. But by the end of there days it grew unable to acess due to high slipspace traffic. The Domain was thought to be destroyed along with all other Precursor creaations when the Halo array was fired. Since very little is known about the Domain and the Precursors. it is believable that the Domain survived.4.WHO IS THE WARDEN? The only Character in the lore previously known in Halo as the Warden was a forerunner A.I that was ancient even in the forerunner days. Though he worked with the Ecumane. I don’t think this is the warden from Halo 5. I feel that this Warden is a Forerunners A.I whos purpose is to inforce the Mantle in the Galaxy back in the forerunner days. With forerunners gone he rested with no tasks till Cortana entered the Domain. hen deciding to protect her n pass his roll of the Mantle to her. Another Idea is that the Librarian who has laid all event in place had long ago given him orders to protect Cortana when she entered the Domain.5.IS CORTANAS PLAN PART OF THE LIBRARIANS PLAN? I don’t believe so. The Librarian would never approve of lives being lost in the manner of destruction Cortana caused in Halo 5. Also she intended for Humanity to inherit the mantle. not those Humanity created. One though must also not forget that the Librarian spoke with Cortana in Halo 4. a conversation that we still know very little about.Well that was just some ideas and speculation that I had in my mind that I feel explain the plot of Halo 5/

Something else that I think is worth noting: Halsey made a point to tell Locke that Cortana was created from her own brain. What Halsey did to create the Spartan-IIs was heinous but she saw it as working towards the greater good. That logic of making sacrifices, even terrible ones, for the sake of a better tomorrow has to be in Cortana since she is a product of Halsey’s brain. Halsey’s thoughts, motivations and reasoning are somewhere in Cortana, and Halsey realizes that, which is how she knows what and why Cortana is doing what she’s doing.
I had to come to this conclusion because it was pretty tough to believe that our beloved Cortana is now “evil”. She’s not evil, she’s just has a radical version of Halsey’s view, possibly because she was pieced back together (cured) from her rampant parts.

I wouldn’t say Cortana is evil. I’m a Halo fan and from what I’ve HEARD Cortana is just trying to help humanity. So why do others consider her “the new bad guy”? I think something big is gonna change in Halo 6. Cortana and Master Cheif have been through a lot together and I think they might either team up again or sadly, Cheif might be forced (by UNSC) to kill her.
Point 2 is a complete assertion, it is never stated or implied that Cortana has multiple personalities or that splitting herself up splits her into good and bad parts. All she says is “most of me is down there”. You’re assuming that because Cortana can split herself up and exist in more than one location that those parts of her aren’t really Cortana. The truth is that you need to remember that Cortana is an incorporeal AI and can exist in more than one place in more than one body; she only chooses to appear in a single human like form because that’s how she sees herself and for ease of interaction . Also when she attacks the Didact the multi Cortana’s merge and say “you don’t mind if we return the favour” which implies they are the same person.
It would kill any and all emotional conflict if it turned out that this wasn’t actually Cortana. You are projecting a negative perception of this storyarc by saying “shes not the real Cortana, that one died and so we can have our good Halo 4 ending back”. I must admit I really don’t understand peoples fixation on that point. The main thing that came from Cortana’s sacrifice is how it affected the Chief, how he failed to protect her and since that failure stands atop millions of corpses now I think its fair to say they didn’t whitewash the consequences of that act.
Cortana isn’t Superman, shes not the main character and hence having her come back, especially when we never saw her die isn’t a big issue. Also, its the journey and I am glad this one didn’t end with her dying so Chief can have man feelings.
Of note is a terminal where it mentions the Domain was repairing itself. The flood said to the librarian that the domain was a precursor artifact, the organ on (sp), and implied it would be destroyed with the firing of the halos. Why would the gravemind lie when she had stranded herself on earth to die when the halos fired? So assuming the domain was destroyed and was since repaired, what fixed it? Why would it repair itself now of all times unless there is an outside force mending it-the precursors are returning.
Also, I don’t think the librarian believed in the mantle at the end of the war. A terminal in H3 indicated she refused it when conversing with one of the didacts (presumably ur).

Very awesome…i needed this when i played with my friends an they asked why is she the bad guy or at the very least think this is the best course of action…an all i had was blame the domain cause really what do we know about it (i was the only one who really knew any halo lore outnof us)
