Halo 5 Originally Had Twice as Many Missions

In an exclusive developer interview conducted by Prima Games in the official Halo 5: Guardians Strategy Guide, Brad Welch - Campaign Designer Director at 343 states that:
“[They] started with a campaign that was way too large- [including] almost twice as many missions in the earliest blocked out form”. He then says that: “There’s no way we could have made all of those missions! The game was a lot stronger once we honed it down to the size that is being released”

For a game that has received heavy criticism for it’s ‘inconclusive’ and lacklustre story, it makes me wonder if the original story was sliced in half due to the high number of missions were conducive to tell the whole story. Could we possibly get another Halo 5 that delivers the rest of the campaign missions and with it the rest of Halo 5: Guardians’ story? I sure hope so.

But that’s not all is it? No it’s not. During the credits of Halo 5: Guardians, this appears:
"We look forward to the next step in our Great Journey together. See you on Sanghelios!"
So it may be possible that the next Halo 5 is primarily on Sanghelios, which may explain why Sanghelios looks like an immense amount of effort was put into it in Halo 5: Guardians. Buuut it could just be a Halo spinoff based on the breaking of the covenant set of Sanghelios.

What do you think?

It would be nice to have them give some DLC to fill in some parts of the story when it comes to the Arbiter’s side of the civil war.

If he feels the end result was “stronger” I hate to see how weak everything else was
if he feels this then what do I think?

i think he’s honestly delusional

Perhaps they could add the second as DLC but 343 DO NOTHING they’re useless, for christ’s sake there is only six game modes in arena right now…

Well, it doesn’t entirely surprise me that there were some missions cut in the planning stage. It happens to most games. However, I get the feeling that these missions were cut late into development due to the very choppy and inconclusive nature of the story. I have to wonder about 343’s time management skills and their ability to judge resources when they had to cut their plans in half. Did they misjudge so completely their ability as a studio that they thought they could make a campaign twice this size? Also, I have to laugh when he says “The game was a lot stronger once we honed it down to the size that is being released”. If that is true I would hate to see what this campaign looked like before.

As for the “See you on Sanghelios” bit, I think that just means we will start the next game where we left off in Halo 5. I don’t read into it more than that.

The “twice the size” bit is just referencing your standard concept phase in creating entertainment. Pretty much every game movie and story starts out larger than the finished project. You start broad and grind it down to a streamlined experience. Obviously, their “streamlining” didn’t make the cut for best story in halo history, but you can’t say that they’re bad devs for trimming fat. That’s how the industry is. Don’t try to be a backseat dev and act like you had a hand in why they made decisions. Misinformation helps no one.

With that said, I really hope we get a halo 5: ____ to tell more of the story. Seems like they’ve set themselves up with that using the colon title. I don’t care if it’s a 30$ add on, or a free dlc. I just have the sneaking suspicion that it might be true. But heck, that’s just my gut feeling. :stuck_out_tongue:

343 has already stated numerous times there will not be campaign DLC.

I’m sure Bonnie Ross said something along the lines of “they can’t wait to make a announcement next year” or something, I’m sorry if I’m wrong.

But maybe this could be Halo 5 extra content package, like a ODST type of deal.

A long shot, but ey.

A lot like Halo 3 if you ask me. Good campaign length; weak campaign content.

By “stronger” he means “able to meet our deadline… kinda”.

Probably. I think if 343 spent 4 years on Halo 5 it would’ve been a much better out-of-the box game than what we got, but sigh…cough cough Microsoft.

Tragic. I would spend $10-30 on expansion DLC in a heartbeat.

More like “make sure there’s 1234674653 REQ items for players to grind or pay to eventually unlock”

I agree, they did say that, I have one word for you, Cortana.

343 was very careful in their wording. They claimed that the campaign was “twice as large” as any other Halo campaign, which only referred to the size of the levels I believe. Many players thought that large meant long, and they made no effort to clarify. There is a lot of spinning of words, which is admittedly getting annoying. “15 playable levels” 3 of them were a minute or two long. “6 warzone maps” 3 were just closed off areas of the other three for assault.

One thing that they were unfortunately clear about was that there is going to be no single player DLC

all I can say is that game was called halo 5:Guardians for a reason instead of just halo 5. It could be quite possible that they make another halo 5 but with another subtitle
Halo 5: Sanghelios for example.

It would be nice to see more story in the form of DLC or a spinoff game like Halo 3: ODST. I personally agree that there was way too much effort put in the environment of Sanghelios for there to be as little missions involving the planet as there was. The Arbiter is one of my favorite characters and it would be awesome if they gave us more story playable as Arbiter, or Arby and Chief like Halo 3’s story. I’m skeptical that this will happen, but a man can dream, right?

This is an interesting idea. I know along time ago they stated that instead of just doing the halo 5 they wanted to slowly move away from numbers so they wouldn’t be like final fantasy with their crazy number. That would be great though with spin offs like that. Maybe play as the arbiter in that one.

Maybe those cut levels is where all the subtly and nuance Mr. O’Connor talks about went.

all of the cut levels in halo 5 will go to halo 6 like halo 2-3

I doubt it. They just want to get away from the numbers. Halo 6’ll no doubt just be called Halo: (insert subtitle here). Games look a bit silly when they’ve got higher numbers next to their name. Nobody wants to see a game titled “Halo 11”, it’d just sound silly.

Ps. I’m aware of Final Fantasy.
