Halo 5 Noob - Likes and Dislikes

So, I’ve avoided Halo 5 until now because there was no permanent doubles playlist. There is no excuse for it taking so long, or for it not being there from the get-go, but that’s beside the point of this post. I haven’t been able to play any games with my normal doubles partner yet, but I tested a few games by myself. I still have a lot to learn but here are my immediate thoughts- (oh and this is multiplayer only)

Likes:

  1. Definitely feels like a proper Halo game. Weapons and movement feel good. No call of duty BS.
  2. I love the additional stats, like accuracy. That’s something lost from the Halo 2 days.
  3. The game runs smoothly, matches are made quickly. Starting a game is very simple.
  4. The maps I’ve played so far are very nice.

EDIT Dislikes 2016-08-12

  1. I touched on this before, but after having played for a while now, the movement really feels great. Scaling to higher places is fluid and easy. It feels a little less clunky and heavy to me now.
  2. Everything feels fair during a battle (except invisibility) which is great. That probably has to do with the balance and dedicated servers.

Dislikes:

  1. Everyone gets notified now of a power weapon respawn? That takes a layer of strategy away. I liked having to keep track of when a weapon spawns. Often the other team would forget, giving you a bit of an advantage.
  2. I don’t mind sprint being in the game, but it doesn’t seem like you move any faster than normal. I’d rather have a quicker but limited sprint. Otherwise, why have it at all?
  3. I’m sure this will come with playing, but I am having trouble knowing when clamber will work or won’t work. I think I was spoiled by the 2016 DOOM game.
  4. This is nit-picking, but why do I have to have a preset control scheme? I’d love to make my own. I KNOW you make changes in the Xbox setting, but then it changes all other games. Just let me set my own. How hard would that be?

EDIT Dislikes 2016-08-12

  1. What the hell is invisibility doing in the Arena? It is so frustrating, especially for someone new to the game and maps, when an opponent gets the drop on you because YOU CAN’T SEE THEM WHEN YOU ARE LOOKING AT THEM. Invisibility should be social or left in the campaign altogether. Am I missing something? Is there a disadvantage to becoming invisible to your opponents? Unfair gameplay IMO.

  2. It took me and my buddy 2 nights to figure out that our mics don’t work, even though we are in the same party, UNTIL the matchmaking has started. What the hell? I should hear my buddy at all times when we are in the same party.

I’m sure both of these lists will grow with time. Just wanted to see what everyone else thought after having played the game for so long now.

About your #1 dislike: in all honesty I prefer there to be no announcing them, but really I don’t see many people forget power weapons in the older games that didn’t call them out for you. To me it’s more of a neutral point cuz in previous games most competitive players were accustomed to remembering when weapons spawn and it still carries over even to h5. Invis for example is never called out, you have to remember to pick it up every 2 minutes that it’s picked up but I guess it differs playlist to playlist for whatever reason. Arena only Val’s out weapons but not the power ups but doubles calls out everything.
#3 dislike: you press clambor once you hit the edge, I’ve never had issues with messing up my clambors. Are you just holding to clambor or pressing the clambor button once you hit the edge? I don’t know if one works better than the other but I only clambor once I hit an edge.
#4 dislike: I think you can set your h5 controls differently than everything else. I did it when I got my elite controller, I believe Xbox has its own presets and h5 has its own presets, I just can’t remember where it’s at, maybe another waypoint poster can get in here and explain more on this for you.

About point 2, the main purpose of sprint in this game is to enhance and enable other Spartan abilities and the movement. Sprinting allows things like slide, thrust slide, bum jumping and Spartan charge (not debating not this abilities place in the game) as well as opening up further map movement. It’s not just necessarily about speed in H5.

#1, another reason for my complaint on that is because is discourages team communication. I’ve played a few games with randoms. No one even bothers to turn on their headset.

#3 Very helpful, I didn’t even know there was a button. I thought you just grabbed the ledge automatically! I guess I would have found that out with more playtime.

#4 That’s a new one on me. I hope you’re right on that because that will help me a lot.

  1. I prefer this sort of change because it actually allows everyone to equally contest the power weapons on spawn instead of having to guess. Really, timing power weapons shouldn’t an emphasized skill as much as being able to actually attain those power weapons, which was a huge problem in halo 2 and such because of thee dynamic spawn system with no announcement of those weapons. But power ups are never announced unfortunately, unless they’re placed on a weapon pad (because of dynamic spawns).
  2. 343 made a change a while back in which they reduced sprint speed while increasing the BMS, so that’s probably why. Personally, I agree with you in terms of a faster sprint for a limited time.

You don’t need sprint to accomplish any of that.

Lol you can’t slide, thrust slide, bum jump or Spartan charge unless you reach full sprint speed. What game are you playing?

I think #1 may be a personal preference for everyone. I just like having to pay attention to things like that, and having one more thing to communicate between mates. That being said, I play doubles exclusively so the only chatter is between me and another person. I could see where 4v4 people would want less unnecessary chatter. Plus with 4v4, there are a lot of randoms playing and no one seems to want to use a mic. Why isn’t doubles a launch playlist again? Lol.

You can’t in H5. That’s just because 343 designed it that way. But you can design a game that uses slide, thrust, etc without sprint.

The reason that clamber works for you and sometimes doesn’t is because it is set to “Hold To Clamber” this can be changed so every single time you go to a ledge, you tap to clamber, instead of holding the jump button as you approach a ledge. I had the same issue until I changed it.

I made some edits to my original post after having my butt kicked for a week.
