Halo 5 needs more Social Playlists

Halo 5’s multiplayer has been pretty awesome to me over the last 2 years and I think that 343 are doing quite a excellent job with the game, especially with the competitive side. But when it comes to their casual side of multiplayer not so much. I do believe that focusing on competitive side of the game is quite great for the hardcore players but for all the casual/newcomer players their isn’t much focus on them which is bad since the main halo experience is on the competitive side. When players opens up the social playlist all there is for them to do is the featured gamemode, BTB, Super Fiesta, Action Sack, Infection, and Grifball. If players wanted to play gamemodes such as Team Arena, Slayer, and Swat they would have to go to ranked area to do so, and not everyone wants to always worry about getting into a match filled with tryhard players and ranks. If 343 were to add more gamemodes to the social area it would make alot of players quite happy.

The thing is, the “main Halo experience” is different for everyone. Some people only play Halo for the campaign and don’t touch multiplayer. Others, like myself, avoid boring 4v4 in favor of more vehicle-friendly playlists with bigger team sizes, and sometimes play nothing but PvE. I think a common assumption is to equate the “main Halo experience” with standard 4v4 playlists (in fact, I’m willing to bet 343 themselves makes that assumption sometimes), but in reality, they need to make sure Halo has something for everybody.

Anyway, it seems to me like you’re saying the “main Halo experience” is relegated to ranked and therefore Halo isn’t friendly enough to “casual” players. However, I’m not sure if the competitive/casual divide correlates directly with the ranked/social divide. I’m sure there are plenty of “tryhards” in social, and newcomers can get ranked to lower the chances of getting matched with players far above their skill level. At least, that’s how it’s supposed to work, in theory.

However I would be very happy if they added a BTB Heavies playlist, like they did in Halo 4. Or if they’re concerned about population, just throw Heavies into the main BTB playlist like in Halo Reach. That’s the thing: population concerns are probably their reason for not adding more playlists in general. Would they have both ranked and unranked 4v4 slayer, swat, etc. if Halo 5 had a bigger playerbase? Maybe, but sadly, Halo 5 lost its chance at a healthy population when it launched in such an incomplete state. I don’t think 343 will make that mistake again.

More social game modes? My experience with nearly every social playlist is a lack of players, or players who quit far too often. To me, if anything, they need to remove nearly half and go back to cycling different modes on and off during the month. This is purely my experience with social games modes.

i wouldnt mind them trying this out. i dont really have a problem finding any games in social playlist though. but i would like to see a rotating playlist every week or something. that would be fun

Well that’s the thing, I think the reason why there’s a lack of players in social is because they are not really interested in those gamemodes. In past halo games there was a social slayer and other mix of other 4v4 gamemodes. I just think if they add skirmish (with the addition of oddball) again people would play social more and also it helps people if they want to get ready before a rank game. Now with the reason why people are leaving games early, I can’t really speak about that since I’ve rarely had that issue on social playlists. I have experience alot of players backing out when I play a rank gamr which I do find quite irritating.

I rank in SWAT each season and basically never touch ranked until it resets. Im happy with the options we have.

Dr Menke said Skirmish was taking away from the population of Team Arena which is why they got rid of it. I also heard it was a sweat fest which could drive casuals away although it might be different now with the new restrictions.

I’d be more for adding better gametypes in Social over adding a bunch of playlists in an already low population game. I played a game of Prop Hunt in Action Sack for example and it was one of the worst things I’ve ever experienced. That playlist just needs an overhaul with better gametypes.

The reason Skirmish was taken out was because it wasn’t any different from its Ranked counterpart, Team Arena. So the playlists were essentially cannibalizing each other. Also add to the fact that in addition to that, the game play wasn’t any less “casual” than Team Arena, which was probably the biggest complaint the playlist had. As for why people leave games, that’s simple. They’re losing. Possibly losing badly. That’s something that isn’t only limited to ranked games. The advantage social has in that regard is you can get players back (up to a certain point).

Agreed, i’m still waiting for a permanent social slayer

I would have to agree the social side of Halo needs more attention. Maybe some of you competitive players would disagree with this but I feel like the ranked section has a lot of playlists that just don’t need to be there and can instead be either re-purposed as a social playlist or removed from ranked and add a new fun social playlist so that there isn’t an over-saturation of playlists between social and ranked.

That said, I think multiplayer in general as far as playlists are concerned is in one of the best places its ever been in Halo 5.
