I mean come on! It got blown up in Halo 4. How will the Didact be able to encrypt the human race?
No seriously, I am tired of all these people complaining about the new composer for Halo 4. I think Neil Davidge has done an excellent job! It’s different than previous Halo’s, but Halo 4 is a new direction. Sure we all miss Marty, and want the Halo theme to make a bigger appearance in game, but we can deal with that.
I do wish it had been better implemented in game. Marine voices and music are not loud enough to blend correctly with the other sound effects. They often get drowned by explosions or other things going on.
Halo music to me is like what John Williams music is to Star Wars. It’s super important for delivering that final push of emotion. And while Neil’s music is capable of doing this, it just needs to be turned up a little bit.
Tired of all the complaints about him. I think he has done really good so far.
I firmly agree with your statements about the Composer.
About both Composers.
I hink he has done a great job, he was just stuck in between two worlds and didn’t write enough. Halo is the big space opera, and needs to be written as such.
I also think it’s loathable how people think that somebody should be fired for not composing music to their tastes. Simply disgusting that it.
Davidge is a great composer, he just needs to take a style and be more assertive with it. The electronic stuff didn’t fit in well, the monks did. More monks, violins and brass.
On a side note, I was pretty dissapointed at the names of the chapters in this game. So many chances to do a “And the horse you flew in on” bit. Never did.
FANTASTIC SOUNDTRACK.
Implemented into the game poorly.
Agreed, it could have been implemented far better. It would be cool if they released a patch and fixed the music. But I think it would be better if they focused on match making first.
That’s why they should have an audio control like what many games has, so that we could adjust sounds to taste. Anyone else think that could be a good idea?

The soundtrack IMO is my favorite Halo one yet. And over Halo 3 ODST that’s truly saying something.
Halo 4 soundtrack is staggeringly good. It just needed to be put to better use in the campaign.
I really like what Davidge has done with the Halo soundtrack. As much as I love Marty and his amazing soundtrack(which can never be replicated) I think Neil is doing a good job.
As for the other composer I’m sure their will be a greater composer… The is a bigger better version of everything in the Forerunner lore…
My favorite theme in the game is Armor and 117
117 needed better places in the campaign. Neil Davidge really made it epic.
117 Was really amazing. But what happened to To Galaxy? I can’t remember it even playing in Campaign. And I wish Arrival had a bigger role. It was my favorite Halo 4 song since they released the first soundtrack samples.
Davidge is nowhere remotely near O’Donnell’s level. It’s pathetic how much better the music is in the original trilogy.
> 117 needed better places in the campaign. Neil Davidge really made it epic.
It’s hilarious how woefully uninformed some of you fanboys are. Davidge didn’t even compose 117.

^^^ What he said.
My favourite Davidge piece was Revival, because it reminds me of the 1st time we see the Didact and it evokes so many awesome feelings.
But 117 is my favourite piece from the whole OST.
That piece is just… it’s ineffable.
Don’t think I came across a thread that hates on the music. I really like it, some of it is absolutely epic in my opinion. The Halo 2 guitar theme is still my favorite though.
There’s no need to insult anyone and call them “fanboys” for thinking 117 was composed by Neil. Misinformation leads to simple mistakes.
But I fully agree with you OP. The soundtrack is a fantastic piece of work, but it is implemented into the campaign so poorly…
I expected to start off the campaign with “Awakening” playing as I made my way to the first QT event, starting the action off with our first encounter with the Storm Covenant.
I expected to hear To Galaxy when I returned to the battlefield after meeting the Librarian.
I would’ve liked to hear 117 at more powerful parts of the campaign, with the broadsword run using a song a bit more… fitting. (117 was good there, but honestly… they could’ve done better in terms of choice of song).
I love the soundtrack. It’s probably my favorite one, but it’s pretty ridiculous how the Spartan Ops missions implement the music better than the actual campaign. Let’s hope 343 takes this advice for Halo 5.
Yeah, I did in fact know that 117 was not composed by Davidge. But I didn’t feel it totally relevant to bring up the fact.
I personally enjoy the Original songs by Marty, but Neil does do a good job filling large shoes. It would be like trying to replace John Williams and still make everyone happy.
I really liked the return of “Never Forget”/“Unforgotten” in the credits. It does an amazing job of setting the mood in that scene.
I like the new Halo soundtrack, but compared to Marty I agree, it just doesn’t have enough emotion to set the mood. For example, “Rain” in the ODST sound track is just so good at capturing the mood.
Needs more piano and strings, in my opinion.
I absolutely, utterly, completely love the soundtrack from beginning to end. My only beef is that levels go all crazy during cutscenes. Not sure if that’s what people are talking about with ‘poorly implemented’, but it bugs the -Yoink- out of me. I use a turtle beach 5.1, so during every cutscene where music and sound effects sound so low-quality, I seethe a little inside.
But the music itself is great. Must listen to it every week at least once. Hoping Neil sticks around. Looking forward to whatever else he would put out.
And from a musician’s standpoint, I kinda hope he DOESN’T beat the older Halo themes into the ground, or do anything but touch on them for a moment. 117 was good as-is. I want explosive, original Halo-sounding music at the end of this trilogy on the next gen of systems. I’m expecting HUUUUUGE battles of the Flood, Covies, Humans, and maybe Prometheans all going at it around the chief while the old Halo theme makes a triumphic and complete return, re-mastered and redone much like the bits in 117 on a huge and grand scale to close out the second Halo trilogy… but that’s just me.
I think he did a pretty good job, but maybe a little more alluding to past Halo music would be nice.
I liked the gregorian chant In Halo:Combat evolved, That is what I recognize most in a halo game, Its awesome soundtrack.
