That was a preview beta, the real thing starts on the 29th, hope I can get a hold of a xbox one by then

That is the preview beta that some people were lucky enough to get. The real thing starts on the 29th, you will be able to download it then.
The codes were given a few days ago to Xbox Preview Program members.
They did this to stress test the servers and locate last minute bugs before the actual beta goes live, to minimize issues and other complications for the masses.
You should be grateful. They only got a portion of the beta with limited options.
