Halo 5 mp: standalone or merge

One of the best aspects of Halo’s Master Chief Collection is that it consolidates all* the Halo games into a single space for muliplayer. This creates a fantastic opportunity for Halo 5 to join that space rather then to act as a stand alone multiplayer game, which would split up the community.

When you look at other FPS games, each time a new version comes out, there is a community divide between the old and new versions. And the same happens with Halo. But the Master Chief collection could set the stage to make Halo’s mp space stand out from the rest. Creating a unified waypoint for the Halo mp experience.

Thoughts?

When Halo 5 comes out people will definitely be conflicted. In the event that the multiplayers are not merged, I feel as though we may just beat Halo 5’s single player, and then return to MCC for Multiplayer.

Halo 5 will ship with at most 13 multiplayer maps and it simply can’t compete with the MCC which will have more than 106.

What needs to happen is having the MCC be a huge download that we can install to our XBONE and the MCC will update to integrate it into the collection.

Yeah that is exactly my sentiment. I don’t care how its done, either have Halo 5 assimilate MCC, or allow MCC to acquire Halo 5’s MP. The goal in my opinion is to create a MP space where the community does not divide, but rather stays together regardless of any new game being released.

If the multiplayer is sharp enough and grossly like by majority of the populace… I believe Halo 5: Guardians and Halo 6… should be a pair bonded with each compatable to the other… firstly this way alot for player numbers will be in lobbies, Halo 5: Gaurdians would just be update to cater for the new maps… perhaps as a cheaper alternative instead of getting the game, Halo 6… some players could just by the map-pack so they can verse their friends; think Halo 3: ODST to Halo 3… think of it as a large dlc game if you will.

Don’t change something that isn’t broken… and innovation is becoming increasingly difficult in-terms of flawless and major changes…

343i should honestly spend more time developing Halo 5 and delay the release date… The entire weight of the Halo franchise depends of this sequel and if they get it wrong then the decline of Halo is going to be irreversible! 343 Industries needs to listen to exactly what the community wants in order to revive multiplayer, that means no sprint, no load outs, no AA’s; we already have 2/3. Microsoft should give 343i as much time as they dang need to develop Halo 5 because we have the MCC to tide us over on the Xbox One until 343i gets it right!

That actually sounds pretty interesting, having all the multiplayer from past and future Halo games existing in the same place. I think it would be cool to just have that one menu to access any Halo game you want. That could possibly be the next big innovative thing that Halo does. I think that may actually be what the Halo Channel is going to try to do, but I’m not sure if they talked about how that will work.

There are still a few questions about how exactly it would be done though if 343 were to actually do it. Would buying Halo 5 give you access to the rest of the MCC if you don’t have that already? If you do have MCC, would you be able to add Halo 5 multiplayer as DLC or something? Should the campaign also be included? I don’t know… But I think this is a good idea.

I wouldn’t think of it as “merging” per se. Rather, it would be nice for the matchmaking screen to show all available options for any games you own. I personally wouldn’t “merge” it . . . I would just let players be able to choose without necessarily changing disks and loading up a new matchmaking screen.

Yeah I like the idea, and I share the same sentiment. Maybe merge is the wrong word, but the overall concept would be to create a single unified space for all-things-halo-mp. So, if I just want to play the new Halo 5, I could limit the matchmaking to just that. Or maybe I want to play Halo 4 & 5. Or maybe just Halo 1. Or maybe the whole kit an caboodle. All being done seamlessly from the same Halo multiplayer hub, which is what HCC has already achieved, albeit without Halo 5. So I worry about where Halo 5 will land juxtaposed to that consolidated MP space.

Ok that makes sense. But if it is done that way, there would probably need to be some way to verify what Halo games you do actually own. Right now the way you do that is by putting your disc into the console, unless you own the game digitally.

So if you’re going to have one matchmaking screen that can take you to any of the Halo games you own, how would that be done for people who own physical copies?

I think that Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer should merge into the MCC via a launch day update. I mean, you can still play Halo 5 multiplayer off of the Halo 5 disc, but it could come with a download code so that you can download the multiplayer to the MCC. Having ALL of the past and future Halo multiplayers in one place would be the greatest thing ever.

An alternative is that when you buy Halo 5 digitally you get an option:

Option 1: Download Halo 5: Guardians to your Xbox One.

Option 2: Download Halo 5: Guardians Master Chief Collection Version to your Xbox One.

Option 1 is obviously your standard digital download. You also have the physical disk option for those so inclined. Option 2 is the version that integrates into the Master Chief Collection. A Halo 5: Guardians campaign tab is added along with an updated campaign playlists. Halo 5: Guardians is added to the multiplayer hoppers, and customization tabs are also added.

Then there’s a third alternative:

Step 1: Buy Master Chief Collection digitally.

Step 2: Download Halo Channel.

Step 3: Buy Halo 5: Guardians digitally

Step 4: Swap between the two games instantaneously using Halo Channel.

I’m not entirely sure, but I imagine there could be some way to register your physical copy with MS as being associated with that particular console and the installation done in an identical fashion as a digital download installation. Regardless, I’m certain there is a software solution - and probably one that is not overly difficult to execute.

Think of it like Halo CE Anniversary. You bought it, and got access to 7 multiplayer maps. You didn’t need Reach to play online, but if you had Reach you got access to all of the Halo CEA maps.

So what I’m thinking is that when Halo 5 launches, it installs on the Xbone, and if you also have the MCC installed it will detect that Halo 5 is installed and you will be able to access all of that content from the MCC, and not have to use the Halo 5 disc again(to combat people just sharing one disc every game could come with a code instead?)

So if you just own Halo 5 but not the MCC, you can still play matchmaking that is JUST the Halo 5 maps. But if you own the MCC, you can play the Halo 5 maps integrated with everything else, or just in Halo 5 playlists.
