So I have a netduma router which allows me to limit which servers I connect too. Well the two closest servers to me in the u.s. Are about 1000 miles away, which is way too far. Anyways I will limit to just being able to join those 2. Well halo matchmaking will find a lobby and if the server is outside the limit you will get booted from the lobby. Well it takes atleast 10 attempts of me getting booted from the lobby to find a game on the two closest servers. So what that means is ober 95% of the time matchmaking is putting you into a game on a server much much further away from you than it needs to. Which means much more lag. I thought it was an interesting experiment but it’s sad that you don’t end up on the closer servers more than ones over 2500-3500 miles away. But now you know why halo lags so much. Matchmaking will bypass 6 better servers and make you play on one that pings at over 120ms vs the 6 closer ones that ping at 35-60.
So the issue is with the servers. The multiplayer is pretty good imo.
The game has its flaws but wouldn’t be as bad if you could play on a decent connection most the time.

If you are experiencing problems, first check your multiplayer connection. Sometimes the servers go down and isn’t a fault of the user. If you get kicked from the game due to disconnection, if it’s not your fault, most likely it’s an issue with the game. Unless the issue is fixed the problem is here to stay. Random disconnects have been an issue for many so you may need to bear with.
I’m not getting kicked because of the game my router is kicking me because I set it to kick me from any lobby where the server is further than 1500 miles. I was saying I was expecting that matchmaking would tend to put you in closer servers but it puts you in servers clear across the country even though there are 5-6 better servers to play on that are much closer. I think it’s a flaw in matchmaking.
Oh it is a flaw, servers are so far away and so spotty most of the times it makes for unfun and laggy games… Try talking to players in south america or europe who don’t have local servers and have to be connected to ones here in north america.
This is a very true statement…
Halo’s servers are good compared to many other games. Halo 5’s gameplay on the other hand…
By any chance can you please tell us your internet’s speed and if your console is wired or wireless connected? It could your speed or your console’s connection to the Wi-Fi that could be contributing to the issues you’re experiencing.
I’m no expert but it could be nice to tell us.

Yeah I play hard wired with an Ethernet cable. Download is around 120 Mbps and upload is about 22 Mbps. 0% packet loss. Latency is typically around 40 ms on Xbox detailed report. Everything on my end is about as good as you can get without going to a fiber optic line.

It is not individual connections. It’s the servers. I live in Detroit and can’t find a decent connection. Can’t imagine what it’s like in other countries. After playing over 1000 hours in Arena, I know the difference. It’s really bad lately.
If you live by one of the servers that 343 is using for matchmaking, the connection is great and it’s like you have host advantage.
A few few times I visited my parents in Chicago and it felt like I was playing on LAN. I was a high diamond and felt like every shot I took connected. At home in Detroit, I’m a mid Gold with a negative kill death who rarely gets double digit kills in slayer even though I’m averaging 68% accuracy on the season after 115 games.
I never encounter new players from my region in Halo 5 anymore. It’s been about 4 months since I met someone from Michigan, Ohio, Iowa etc. I think the only people who keep playing are those by the servers. It’s had a snowball effect.
I’m believing there’s something 343 did recently with their net code that made it worse. It’s never been this bad where I’m constantly hitting over 70% accuracy with over 2K damage and still can’t get double digit kills anymore.

Have you tried this on the three different search preference settings?
Don’t let the search preferences fool you. Even searching on focus no longer means you are going to be on the closest server to you. Josh mentioned something very interesting in the match making section. He said something to the effect that caught my attention to this. He said we put you on the best server “when we can”. which really just left more questions then answers for me. What does when we can mean? My guess is now we are being pooled on the most populated server. Not the best server for your area. So this really can only lead me to believe the population has dropped enough to where we are now just being put on the server that has the most population at the time we are playing. This is the only reason I can think of that would make sense to this. Population… I don’t know about you guys/gals but I only have a couple of friends left playing this game. No where near the amount when the game first came out… Sad thing about this is that the performance of the game is going to be greatly effected.

Don’t forget us Australians we get worse lag than everyone !

Yeah from what I could see through about 50 games switching between focused, expanded, or balanced, they each picked the same servers, atleast so similar I didn’t notice a change in which servers were typically selected. I did notice that search times were longer and I was finding people more similar in ranking when it was on focused and then on expanded the ranks were more spread out but not really a big enough swing to make the skill level match unbalanced. I’m usually around platinum and diamond when playing solo so it may be different in much higher ranks but I can’t speak to that.

That makes sense to me. Especially over the last 2-3 months where it seems things have shifted to be much worse than it has been. Maybe it’s just me but even when I get matched in a social skirmish game against a solid team of higher ranked players and we lose by 25, if I’m playing on a solid server and my bullets actually register properly, I have much more fun, than playing a game of less skilled players, winning by 15, and my bullets don’t register well because of a bad server.
I think you can play around a bad team and still have fun. You can’t play around a bad server. If I need to play more stealthy and try and get a couple kills here and there even though I know I probably can’t win this particular game, I can do that and still not be upset because the game ran smoothly. A bad server or too distance server there aren’t many scenarios to still make that game fun.

I feel it’s the opposite. The game play is solid but the servers are very wonky. That and I feel the Xbox one itself is under powered for all it’s supposed to do.
So this sounds like server connection, right? I’d advise reading the OP in the following thread and adding a reply. It’s where 343 is colelcting the data regarding serviers and connectivity issues.
Happy Haloing!
