Halo 5 Maps v. Halo 3/Reach Maps

So I just finished watching some old MLG matches from Halo 3 and Reach and notice the Halo 5 maps don’t feel as tight as they should. This is surprising to me considering the focus 343 threw on “Arena” and competitive play for H5. Feel Halo 5 maps have too much unnecessary space or objects in it. The weapon spawns are awkward, spawn zones are kind of wack. Keep in mind they have to design the maps to account for the new movements; sprint, clamber, boost, etc, not an excuse though. Even the Midship remake feels off. I cant clearly articulate my thoughts 100% because I’m going more off the ‘feeling’ the maps give me rather than tangible aspects. What do you guys think? Can anyone see what I’m getting at?

Also the non asymmetrical maps in this game make me die a little inside.

They suck compared to h3. theres little to no symmetry and even halo 3’s non symmetrical maps were great like gaurdian (esp for objective) and pit TS was always intense

Pretty much all the maps in H5 have to be larger in scale due to the movement in H5, with sprinting boosting and clambering a H3 sized map would feel tiny

H5 maps are designed around the new abilities which is why they suck

not to the same degree as H% but Reach had a lot of movement abilities to address in the map but still felt like true Halo Maps. I’m confused

To me halo maps stopped feeling like Halo maps after H3, some of Reach’s DLC maps felt like Halo maps but nothing out of H4 or H5 feels like a Halo map to me

Same, I really wish we could ge some revamped maps from H2/H3 that weren’t just forged, or at least forged better, some of the forged remakes are spot on but there are others that could use some serious help

Riptide is literally the worst

Honestly there are no memorable maps in H5. Halo 4 actually had some maps that were a blast to play one. H5 not so much, maybe fathom is there stand out map for the game.

Maybe if 343 did remixed versions of older maps from H2/H3 instead of maps they just released the free updates would be more impressive

sprint ruins maps. one of its many many many flaws

in terms of use of space the movement abilities remove a predictable and uniform move speed to design around making it feel very loose in comparison, it really is the primary reason, though yes spawns in this game are awful despite more power off spawn. Also when you spawn with less power a death has more impact and weight, also when you have less power each action has more importance. I feel both of these make it feel less tight.

You had only 1 ability off-spawn, camo had no movement benefits, neither did hologram or armour lock, sprint and evade was pure lateral movement and also more temporary than h4 or 5s unlimited use. Jetpack was the most breaking, though lateral movement did suffer when against sprint, in reality it really was a game of sprint vs jetpack, also they didn’t move as fast in comparison to h4 or 5s movement.

as an example let’s take countdown which i feel is probably the best map and the most fair for lateral vs vertical movement, in countdown i could sprint, however there were ways to cut off sprinters and lines of sight which can punish it, if you jetpack then you essentially are weaker but able to escape by ascending levels or by making it hard to hit headshots… even then nerd nades could stop that easily.

By contrast h5 has less value on nerd nading and intricate projectile placement through it’s movement abilities thus map design, also it’s much harder to cut-off or read opponents when stringing together sprint, clamber, groundpound, slide and thrust is always there to escape from most line of sight and space issues…where in reach when sprint ran out or you met a guy in an open space it was either risk dying by running away once regained and potentially getting cut off or outshoot him.

V7 alleviated that issue by putting evade (an ability more fun and dynamic than sprint) and jetpack as map pick-ups which further placed emphasis on good positioning and map movement, something you don’t need as much in halo 5, as much as an escape instinct when you are forced to be really aggressive since all players start with such a hard focus on defensive abilities.

hope that’s understandable and not just gibberish.

I agree. My biggest gripe is that every map almost feels too ‘open’, you can get shot from so many lines of sight it’s crazy. It makes everything harder to control and a lot easier to get run all over, especially if you play solo and go up against a team. Game over.

I appreciate that they had to design maps around the abilities, but sprint isn’t a new factor for Halo games, and an element of thrust has been present for a while, too. I’d like to see what I’d describe as a ‘classic Halo’ map, just to see how it’d feel. We’re just hypothesising that it wouldn’t work because of the new style, we’ve not actually experienced it yet.

Coliseum Eden and Truth are very nice
I just don’t like the mini maps like empire

Well, I can actually remember Halo 3 maps because most of them looked entirely different and had unique layouts and assets.

What do you mean talking about mini maps?
Truth about the same size as Empire.
