Does anyone notice that Halo 5’s maps usually have:
-
wider, open areas or ‘rooms’, for example Truth vs Midship, to accommodate for sprint - a smaller total map size/perimeter, we don’t get bigger Team Slayer maps such as High Ground, Boardwalk, Powerhouse or multi-story indoor maps like Construct, Ivory Tower, Countdown and SwordbaseAs a result, my personal observations of how this changes gameplay are:
-
Instead of enemy engagements occuring in one particular part of the map (think of High Ground or the Sword Base grav room) which gives you time to strategise and choose your approach as you walk there after respawning, in Halo 5 engagements would happen in one half of the map, and by the time you respawn and try to get there the enemies would be on the other side of the map, due to the smaller map size and faster pace. - Comparing Sword Base and Countdown to Empire, Fathom and Coliseum, the former maps have more segregated ‘rooms’, allowing engagements to be smaller and more controlled. The latter maps are much more open, giving little cover as hiding from opponents behind one wall would open your back to being cross-mapped. - Wider areas create more long range shooting, and make it more difficult to run behind cover (especially without thruster) since most of those ‘rooms’ are are wide open. Also, take for example Midship, fighting along the tight streets gives you higher opportunities to use melee (due to the closer distances) and grenades (narrow spaces give less room to dodge) creating a very balanced trinity between guns-grenades-melee. While on Truth, fighting with an enemy on street would usually be a BR/Carbine duel, unless one of them is skilled enough to place a grenade perfectly without it bouncing off into oblivion.
Wait, Halo 5 has maps?
Sorry, I kinda forgot, there’s only like 7 original maps in that game.
With sprint, there should be more rooms with larger areas, and maps should be bigger. Its pretty easy for a team to get to the other side and gain map control which is dumb. Maps I found with reasonable cover and good amount of space was Fathom, truth, regret, pegasus, and a couple of other maps. Some maps, its just easy to know where a player is going to respawn because its so small and I hate that. Maps should be bigger. Even Guillotine would play very well for 4v4 slayer.

Yeah, though there might be some issues. Larger rooms could make cover more spaced apart. While non-sprint halos have scaled down distances, with Halo 5 a person getting shot at is knocked out of sprint, and since they’re in a gun fight they would be strafing instead of sprinting. The gap in movement speed would be compensated for with the thruster pack, however that hinges a lot on a one-use (per 4 seconds) ability.
While map control and team shooting across the small map greatly encourages team play, it compromises social gameplay where you just want to lone wolf it and get into 1v1 BR offs without someone picking you off from the other side of the map.
Also the shield not recharging while sprinting means that after a gunfight, it would be hard to sprint away before enemies arrive at the scene, as you’re either a sitting duck waiting for your shields to return or you run away praying you don’t get capped in the head from the many sightlines.
