Recently I’ve been having problems with Halo 5 including the following:
-
Partial black screen then crash when playing customs. - Crash at customs menu - Crash at customization menu - Partial black screen then crash in Forge. - Loading a customs map takes about 5 minutes then doesn’t display a thumbnail. - Spartan disappears from Fireteam menu and Spartan Hub when preparing a multiplayer game. - Game takes about 3 minutes to display icons for REQ’s and names. - I sometimes randomly freeze at menu screens. - *Sometimes I join a friends custom lobby then he starts the game, my game freezes, I get stuck at main menu then have to restart.*If it helps at all, I have an original Xbox one, got the MCC bundle (oh god) and I have an external Seagate 2TB HDD that all my games are stored on. I have begun to suspect that this is a console issue because recently Fallout 4 crashed to home before even loading the main menu. Sorry if I can’t get back immediately but I got school and lots of work to do so I’ll try to answer when I can but don’t expect a response immediately.
I have many of the same problems you describe above (mainly Halo 5 but sometimes other games). Additionally I also have the same model of Xbox One you have; I fear these original Xbox Ones were not built to last! I think the problems you are experiencing are related to both console and the game, mostly because Halo 5 is such a demanding game for the console.
Most of the time when the symptoms get bad for me I generally do the following: A cold reset of the Xbox by holding the power button for 10 seconds.
Also, this sometimes helps as well: navigate to network settings on your Xbox One and reset your “Alternate MAC address” (they keep renaming that setting though so look for something similar). The console will then restart and you should find Halo 5 a bit more responsive (even clears up some of the disconnection issues for a while).
Also note the following:
- If you still get the problems, then it could be an issue with your version of the game itself. You could try reinstalling the game in case any files were corrupted when downloading and installing the first time (only do this at a last resort as those updates Halo 5 has had will take days to download). - Check your external hard drive is performing correctly. Plug it into a computer (whatever you do don’t format it!) and transfer some large files, e.g. videos, and check the read and write speeds. Additionally, your hard drive should have come with software to check for bad partitions, run a check to make sure everything is good. I can’t remember whether Microsoft’s Xbox format is readable on PC, if it isn’t then you won’t be able to do this anyway. - Check your internet connection, if things take a while to load then it could be your console’s connection. Run an upload and download test to make sure everything is right on a PC, and then navigate to network settings on your Xbox to see if the signal is strong enough. Unless your internet is horrendous, then it shouldn’t be too much of a problem as gaming uses very little download compared to something like streaming a film. I get away with 1 megabit (yep bit not byte) and my games run smoothly.

Ok so an update, I tried the game on a different xbox. Not an S model just the updated base model (The one that comes with a headphone jack in the controller.) I used a disk this time and downoaded it internally. So far I have noticed that it still takes forever to load a custom game and I still get retrieving data while sitting at the customs menu. My bookmarks still take forever to load (if they ever load) and my game still freezes at the customs screen. I have tried reinstalling twice and I even started from scratch with the whole game redownload. I don’t know what’s happening. My friend says he is using an original day XB1 with a digital download and an external HDD. His game runs perfectly with no issues what so ever. I’m beginning to think it could be save data corruption (If that is a thing that affects game play) or it could be the game itself. I’m all out of ideas now so if I have to then I will nuke my save data but I want to make sure it’s not that first.
Don’t delete your game save data unless your certain that is it. One way to find out is create another account (or ask a friend to use theirs) and launch Halo 5 on your Xbox with that account and see if you get the problems. If not, then it would appear to be your save data.
If it is your save data then that would be very odd as most of your data is actually stored on 343’s end (game statistics and things).
If it isn’t your save data, then do double check your internet settings, maybe contact your provider or Xbox support explaining what’s happened and see if they can help.
