Hey community.
While I can understand that the Halo 5 Guardians reveal was a huge surprise – for those of us who didn’t read much into the trailer-- as it had a few controversial elements, I strongly believe that this is what Halo Reach and Halo 4 should have been.
I’ve been playing Halo since CE (check my nameplate on Reach) and I really hated the CoD-like features on Halo 4, but I can see that 343i has listened to the community and gone back to Halo’s roots. Halo 5 is not a CoD:AW copy, it is an evolved/next gen arena shooter. Congrats 343i!
I imagine that a lot of you might be wondering "how is this going back to their roots?" Here’s how…
Halo is an arena shooter. It is about map control, power weapons on map, fair/equal starts, skill based multiplayer. No perks, no loadouts, no armor abilities, no ordinances. That is exactly what Halo 5 is, at it’s core. Therefore it is already much better than Halo Reach and Halo 4, and back to it’s roots.
Spartan Abilities != Armor Abilities, i.e it’s not the same thing. Everyone spawns with the same abilities, no one has an advantage over the other player from the beginning. But now you might be wondering "what about the Spartan Abilities though?"
-
Thruster Pack - This is NOT from CoD, it’s from Halo Reach and Halo 4, and will probably be nerf’d for the final release. One can argue that CoD:AW took the Thruster Pack from Halo. But let’s be honest, this feature is prevalent in numerous FPS.
-
Clamber - While this is a great quick way to vertically maneuver, and I feel that skill/crouch jumping will still have it’s benefits within the maps. This is not game breaking. It is not exclusive to CoD:AW as Crysis 2 had it years ago. It is common in modern FPS.
-
Stabilizer - Though you can hover in the air for a second to get that kill, you will be easy target for anyone with a precision weapon. This is not game breaking, it’s balanced.
-
Spartan Charge - This is just a fancy melee, you have the Thruster Pack to evade, the player will be an easy target if they miss the charge. This is not game breaking, it’s balanced.
-
Slide - You can do is in almost every modern FPS game. This is not game breaking.
-
Smart Scope (ADS) - This is arguably the most controversial thing about Halo 5. Good news… it’s just a prettier version of the scope you’re used to on your precision weapons, and it’s been added to every weapon. You will be descoped when being shot in scope. You can 4 Shot Kill someone with a BR without being scoped, and 343i has said that there is no penalty for hip fire. So what is the problem here? That it looks like ADS? Almost all modern FPS have this feature. Halo’s ADS is not like other FPS games, and is imo much better. This is not game breaking, it’s balanced.
-
Sprint - Why shouldn’t Spartans be able to run? Your shields won’t recharge while you’re running. This is not game breaking, it is balanced.
-
Ground Pound - This is something that worries me. I think the Ground Pound should be nerf’d for the final release. Maybe only allow people 3 Ground Pounds per game? Or decrease the radius of the damage, or decrease the damage…do something. I can see a lot of people spamming this from heights, and it’s not balanced, and slightly game breaking. Also, I remember an ability like in Crysis 2 I believe, so it is not a CoD:AW ripoff.
Majority of these Spartan Abilities are just ways for Halo to be modernized, and isn’t game breaking except Ground Pound imo.
CoD:AW does NOT hold a monopoly on ADS-like animation or Sprint. Please be objective, educate yourself and look past your first impression to understand that Halo is back to being an arena shooter. This is the direction Halo Reach and 4 should have gone, instead of copying core elements from other FPS.
Do you want to play Halo 2 remastered? There’s the Master Chief Collection for that. But I strongly believe that Halo 5 will be the best Halo game since 2 and 3.
This Beta will give enough feedback for 343i to give us an amazing game in a year’s time!
We are all playing as Spartans, it is about time we actually felt like we are.
but i like ground pound. guess we’ve got to try the beta
