The recent releases of BF1, Gears 4, Forza and this year’s sports games were enough to knock it out of the top 20 most played XBO games list. Gears 4 isn’t doing so good only peaking at #7 though so Halo may pass it again at some point.
My question is what do you think 343 could do to improve the interest in the franchise and keep players more invested in the game? I can’t remember any Bungie Halo ever falling out of the top 5 let alone top 20. Even Reach.

They should listen us fans to what we actually want instead of ugly looking armor, if someone says remove sprint then -Yoink- yourself.
With the implementation of sprint, Halo’s combat has evolved.
I’ve said this many times, fix the servers!
Well the game is a year old now and with the crazy number of great shooters being released (Battlefield, Gears, Titanfall) it’s not surprising that it has fallen out of the top 20 most played on Live. I intend on still playing Halo, alongside Titanfall 2, but it’ll definitely cut into my playing time as well.
It’s not all doom and gloom though - Halo 5 is still a phenomenal game and the style of the different shooters make them all really unique from each other (Battlefield - large scale combat, Gears - third person, Titanfall - mechs, COD - run and gun). So as long as 343 continues to support it with updates I believe a large percentage of the player base will remain. There was so much to do in this game and the community is great, so even though I’ve…
Campaign
-
Beat it solo legendary. - Unlocked all of the collectibles.Multiplayer
-
Finished the REQ system. - Reached SR125. - Completed most all commendations. There’s still a lot left for me to do before I’ll feel as though my Halo 5 experience is complete.
Campaign
-
Beating it co-op legendary. - Unlocking the remaining achievements.Multiplayer
-
Hit SR152 (not sure I ever will, but hey, goals are good). - Finish the remaining commendations.Custom Games
-
Play them. More specifically, the amazing community maps / creations. The only mode I probably will never touch (just don’t have the time anymore as a full-time working parent with two young kids in the house and other obligations / life) is Forge. But again, there’s still a lot of meat to the bone there for me to get through, and I’d imagine there are a number of other players who feel the same way. Not to mention we have a very active, fun Spartan Company, and those commendations to accomplish as well.
I think if they were to add content (and they should), it needs to be big, on the scale of the WZFF release. Do you remember how huge of an update that was and how much fun people were having / still are having with it? I play it at least once most days to try and grind the victories commendation, and it felt very different from other modes. People aren’t going to care much about more armor / aesthetics. If 343 wants to continue supporting the game and profiting off of it, they need to do some more big updates that will get people exciting, buzzing, and wanting to return to Halo 5 again. Hopefully once they do, they’ll stay around again for a while to continue having fun in the other modes again.
Some suggestions:
Campaign
-
Score attack is great and all, but how many people actually care about it? Why not do DLC campaign content. My suggestion would be to do a prequel DLC. Three levels or so that would solve a lot of gripes people had with the campaign’s story. Make them all Blue Team missions (increasing their mission count), and have it act as a bridge of them reconnecting between Halo 4 and the start of Halo 5. People would LOVE this and absolutely would return to the game to try it out.Multiplayer
-
Classic firefight mode (I wouldn’t care as much, but a lot of people would). - Three different modes released at once (this I would LOVE). Bring back Oddball, King of the Hill, and Race. Have community maps or whatever in place for the last one. Can you imagine seeing that article on IGN? I’d be all over it, and so would a lot of the rest of the community. - What about a matchmaking playlist for community maps? For example, the Cops and Robbers one I saw on YouTube the other day. Matchmake players and send them into the amazing community creations, taking the “let’s round up some guys in order to do this” out of the equation.Any of these ideas would work, some better than others I think.

Too late, a number of strategically poor decisions were made by 343/MS at launch and in the first 6 months which are not possible to repair from a player population perspective. This game will never sustain any population except the most die hard fans. Its Halo 6, and that better be a success, or Halo is over as a major console gaming franchise. You can certainly argue it already is.
What they can do now is damage control, collect data and learn for Halo 6, and perhaps try to recover an inch of trust by becoming far more transparent and open towards the Halo community and communicate. The lack of comunication after launch of H5 was/has been apalling. And to keep implementing improvements and support H5.
Oh, and Titanfall 2 is also due release. Another fps with great potential to further dilute the player population between the various fps games out now.
Additionally, and I think they could and should do this in time, an update that allows for local MP. I get that they wanted to make money off of the game and making it a single player experience helped achieve that, but now that the game is starting to decline in player population, why not? The hype would be unreal.

I almost clicked ‘like’ on this post, but then became too preoccupied with -Yoinking!- myself.
Considering we had a bunch of AAA games come out in the past year (and we’re not even done with this year yet - This year’s Call of Duty isn’t out yet.), it’s not that surprising.
Even long standing games like GTA V & Minecraft, and some sports games are taking up the top slot.
In case anyone wanted to check instead of taking the OP’s statement as fact. Yes, it isn’t in the top 20 anymore. My question is do we need it to be to keep playing? Are we only going to keep playing if it is in the top?
I don’t need it to be. In fact I am okay with it being less popular. I am more interested in Halo than in top 20 games. However, to help it get back there, with all the new games coming out, they need to fix their servers first and foremost. It is a little embarrassing that we are still plagued with issues in that area.

You do realize Overwatch and Rainbow 6 Siege is on there twice, right?
Otherwise Halo is #19 on that list.

lol not everyone agrees with my way of response but I’d rather keep sprint in halo 5 and halo 6.
I can’t imagine how dull and boring halo would’ve been if sprint is removed.

Yeah, I meant to ask about that. Like, why is that listed that way? And how is the “most popular” list different from the “most played” list that they used to post?

Lol, dull and boring. Kids these days…but we’re not in the sprint thread so yeah.

Well said / written. In addition to Forza, Gears, Titanfall 2 and BF1, Doom got a free campaign update adding Arcade Mode that is so much fun. So yeah, I agree, damage limitation.

Go to the store on the console, search by most played, Halo is lower than 19th with the 360 game Black Ops right beside it.

You do realize the market saturation is 10x greater with quality games than it was in the Bungie hey-day. Not to cut 343 too much slack but in this generation it’s hard to keep the masses interested for long periods of time.
I would say to listen to the fans fix some server issues make casual slayer and keep super fiesta(personal wants) also make it a little less pay to win since if you buy gold req packs at a early level you could get something like a helios phaeton and devastate a team as long as you are decently skilled

Is it really though ? There are games way higher than Halo 5 that have been out a lot longer. What are they doing that 343i are not.
Edit = Just checked the most played on my console, Halo 5 is 21st with Black Ops 20th, Halo 5 is lower than a game that’s a generation and 5 or 6 years older than it.

Isn’t CoD only on Playstation now? Or did I read that wrong

They get DLC 30 days early now. The game is still out on both systems.
