By the mere fact that you cannot see if another player has a mic or not. No one talks because everyone thinks no one else has a mic. Hell for my first few games, i wasnt even sure if my mic worked because i couldnt see a symbol in game to show if i even had one.
How are we supposed to rely on our team mates more if no one talks to eachother? I feel lile im just playing with AI’s with varrying levels of intelligence.
P.S this is in the right forum, im tslking about something thats part of matchmaking.
People get real pissy when they start losing. And bless the soul of the one guy who’s having a real rough game because I’ve been in games where the verbal abuse gets heaped on said player. Usually by the person who gets real pissy. So I’m not surprised most people don’t talk anymore. I wouldn’t be surprised if people just begin matches with everyone muted as well. Pissy people take the fun out of the game.

This is it right here. I have a mic, but I don’t use it because I do not have the patience to deal with some pissy idiot. Those are the types that usually have the mics.

Getting real pissy is putting it mildly. Trash talking players who don’t play as well with language that would make a drill sergeant blush is more like it. Add in people who lack self awareness to the point where you hear every describable kind of noise pollution coming from their mics and it’s a miracle anyone even listens. I just don’t get the level of disrespect, verbal and otherwise, the permeates every level of this game. It often seems like some people don’t log on for the fun of close competition, but to try to demoralize as many other people as possible. It doesn’t happen all the time, and there are some fun loving good sports, but every so often I have to put the game down when I find myself thinking I would never want to know any of these people IRL, let alone talk to them in game.
Welcome to the modern age of online gaming. Halo 5 isn’t the only MP game where people don’t talk on the regular.
And it goes beyond not talking because other people don’t talk. I personally don’t normally talk when I solo queue because I’m not playing with the mindset to need to communicate. I stay out of ranked for the most part when I solo queue, and in social I don’t want to stress myself out with the added frustration of trying to communicate with people. That, and the mixed bag of attitudes you get online is just a turn off. I find it strange that a relatively well-spoken and nice individual has to go all “edgy” and throw racial slurs into what was otherwise pleasant conversation. At that point, I’m done talking to you.
Just play with friends? A lot of people in games in Xbox now don’t even use game chat that just play for fun and don’t want to hear 12 year olds screaming, I’m actually one of those people when I’m not playing with friends I still use party chat regardless of what game I’m playing.
well, its not just Halo, in recent years the population which uses mics has become a fraction of what it used to be and the ones that do use it seem to be either ones making irritating sounds or kids trying to contact people by talking slowly and in rare cases someone who is explaining situations to others. Now the people usually use the mics usually when they play with friends which has its pros and cons.
I think party chat ruined that aspect. They want to encourage socializing and team stuff, but all party chat does is isolate you with your own group of friends. I miss the days before party chat and there was always a mute button for those annoying people.
People haven’t talked frequently in matchmaking since Halo 2 (IME) and it’s rare to find a game (in this genre) where random matchmade people talk frequently (I personally can only name one and it’s pre-Halo 3). The basic problem is this: you generally don’t stick around with the people you’re playing with in matchmaking. So, it’s like the virtual equivalent of a busy city sidewalk. You could try to be the odd one out and make conversation with a shifting crowd, but that’s unlikely to go far or last long with each individual unit of that crowd. Even if you don’t realize this at first, eventually you’ll pick up the pattern from everyone else.
So, people don’t talk. It’s natural to the environment and how humans work. The way around it is to find a multiplayer environment where players stick together for more than one or two matches. Namely, custom servers (in my experience, mainly with other games.) There’s other problems associated with those, but in dealing with the complexity of human behavior you will not find a perfect solution.

The last “12 year old” I heard on mic was singing the U.S. national anthem in a wailing off key while we absolutely failed to take the first objective in a warzone firefight match. It was spectactularly hilarious. The problem I personally have with “unsavory conversation” is 19 year olds screaming (since it’s just loud, angy, and has no redeeming comedic value what-so-ever.)

Even if people wanted to talk, the system discourages it. If you’re in an XBL party, you can’t hear your teammates. In previous Halos, your teammates’ coms would come out of the TV, but in Halo 5 they removed that completely(last I checked, anyway).

Makes sense. If you’re in an XBL party, you’ve made a decision to only talk to and hear people in the party with you. People who may not even be playing the same game as you (or a game at all). Your teammates’ coms only come through the TV if you have your headphones unplugged.
I used to use my mic in every game, team and randoms. I stopped. No one communicates for objectives, only to swear at one another. The chance of meeting someone who isn’t a complete bozo seems so astronomical that it is a joke.
Things people with mics/Kinects like to do in online gaming:
Play loud music
Talk on the phone
Yell at their kids
Yell at their parents
Sing off key
Talk about your mother because you were the first person whose gamertag caught their eye
Tell you to piss off because they don’t care about your call outs (These guys are Hardcore™.)
Get high/drunk and laugh uncontrollably through a match
Threaten to murder you and your whole family because “you suck” (alternatively, they may encourage suicide)
…
Wow, this list just keeps going; I’ll leave it alone for now though. Protip: If you want to meet people who play Halo 5 online so that you can have online friends to talk to, then take note of gamertags and send messages afterwards. DISCLAIMER: the majority of my online interactions have been in objective-based game types, mostly Warzone, but trolls and potential friends can be found anywhere. EDIT: My Spartan Company picked me up because I was one of three people in a Warzone match using a mic, so it can be a good thing to do. Just don’t let it frustrate you. Learn to let go when people don’t want to talk.
