I have been very skeptical about Halo since MCC. I love the series but I don’t want to have another disappointment like I have had before. We should all be vigilant so that Halo 5 has more success.
I recently bought a high end PC, which is great but it lacks the only game that’s ever caught my imagination in a shooter (Halo, obviously.) I bought it after I got my Xbox One and played Titanfall, Destiny etc. The last year has been absolutely awful for console gaming- like really pathetic and I’m sure you need no reminding. Therefore Halo 5 presents and opportunity.
Every major release has been riddled with problems. However, Halo 5 need not be. There will be difficulties but we can’t afford anything game breaking or even just particularly irritating. With every Halo since Halo 3 the games have launched and had serious issues. Reach was unbalanced, uncompetitive and lacked any motivation to play, however by the last year or so before Halo 4 it was a truly brilliant game. Halo 4 I feel was fun and mostly balanced, however another Halo game with no competitive ranking was another dagger into Halo’s community. So far… and I say this carefully, Halo 5 seems to be getting things near the mark. As the only non-modern COD style shooter which has any chance of selling and being fun- all it need to have success is a good launch and a competitive ranking system- get that right and Halo 2’s spiritual successor just might bring a new era to the Halo community. One successful launch and Halo will swallow up many other AAA sub-par shooters (and frankly punish publishers for taking the piss off gamers).
I’m looking forward to it- please make sure I don’t regret my hype.
I hope you’re not setting yourself up for disappointment with such high expectations. The Buddhists believe that desire is the root of all pain, and the Halo community is living proof of this basic human truth. Try to enjoy whatever it is they come up with - it really shouldn’t be that hard. And in the long run, if you find that the game just isn’t for you, then you move on to something else. I’ve waded through every version of Halo since the beginning. Loved 'em all. But with MCC I’ve gone back and replayed them all, and in all honesty they’re good games, but they’re over. It’s time to move on to 5, whatever shape it may take. Put the expectations away and just jump in.
