Halo 5 in game Codex/compendium

So I saw that someone made a suggestion over at reddit that Halo 5 should have an in game compendium, especially since he had drifted away from the extended universe. With Halo 5 incorporating the extended universe they wanted a resource of information so they can keep on point with where characters and things are coming from.

I feel this isn’t a bad idea. But if this ever does come to light or is in the works. I have 1 suggestion I’d like to put in myself. List the media that the character is portrayed in. I.E. First appearance and other appearances. My suggest does break the 4th wall, but I like to know where characters crop up from, and I feel it would lead new and existing halo fans towards the extended universe media.

I think it’d be cool to have something like the Second Stories from Nightfall. When you meet a character or visit a location you get a prompt to press a button and learn more about it, via video or text. Some characters may even get a short mission that could show their origins or backstory.

Thats cool, but would be too huge of a change to add this late into production. Also the amount of asset creation due to the fact that so many of these characters come from completely different planets, areas and times. Though Now I’m thinking how cool it would be to have flashbacks as a Spartan 2 kid being captured, trained, and reliving key moments from the different spartan 2’s childhood/adulthood.

Isn’t that sort of what the Halo Channel is for though? I mean, doesn’t it supposedly have a feature that links it to the Universe articles here on waypoint?

Aside from that though, I do agree that a codex of some kind would be a useful feature. Akin to what they have in the Mass Effect games, accessible from the game’s pause menu/main menu.

That would be cool.
I’ve always wanted an ingame dictionary.

I’m sure they could put an encyclopedia or something in the “meld” section. Something like Assassin’s Creed’s databases. Or do a new series of informative videos like they did for the Waypoint app on the 360.

The halo channel is really cool, but its the biggest pain to find anything on it. The music is awesome though

Yeah! When I read the thread title I immediately thought of the the codex from Mass Effect 1. The split between Primary and Secondary entries was a good way of breaking up the huge blocks of information they contained, plus the voiceovers with the Primary entries to cut down on reading time. I think that made it easier to absorb too.

Links to the compendium from the MP lobby menu with “how to play” instructions for objective gametypes would be nice too.
Concise, with a few tips such as. “Transport the bomb from the middle of the map to your enemies base. Hold it in the highlighted circle while it arms and when it blows you win the round!”
Seems obvious? Well it seems that a lot of people have trouble playing the objective so it might help out a bit.

That would be great, and like Mass a Effect, have the main entries read aloud by Cortana.

I think it’s a brilliant idea. They can link to a dynamic online library that’s constantly updated; perhaps the one on Waypoint. And it would require minimal resources to make happen.

Having a thing in which people can access the information about the Canon would be great, as I am sure there are people who want to learn in an easier fashion. Plus that would be a huge amount of information they would have to make as there is a lot of Canon now. I wonder what ways they could do it that people would still be interested enough to go out and get the Novels or various other media.

That’s a good idea. Being able to have all the stuff relating to the canon in one place would be easier than trying to look through a 400 page book or something like that trying to find that one piece of information.

Didn’t they do something similar in Halo CEA, where you could scan things using Kinect (that could be taken out), and then it would store the information in an in-game library?

That’s what I was thinking. A Mass Effect style codex would be great to introduce newcomers and lore to those who haven’t read the books.

I’d love to have the Library return. Just like a codex, but with 3D models to look at.

Personally I would prefer they finish everything else before they do a codex. Like a file share with a browser for example.

I think it would be cool if they did Spartan Ops but made it better. Make it more like a secondary campaign and less like Firefight/ TV show mix to tell those stories.
